Title: Hawthorne High School Post by: Surfer on October 07, 2014, 09:30:52 PM Is their any information about this school from the 1960's with Dennis and Brian and Carl and Mike going to that school
Title: Re: Hawthorne High School Post by: stack-o-tracks on October 07, 2014, 11:14:26 PM Hello, Surfer!!
Mike Love did not attend Hawthorne High, only the Wilson brothers & Al Jardine went there. There were some members of their "entourage" such as Ron Swallow, their early road manager or whatevs who also went there. I believe David Marks was too young to attend the school before they became famous. I believe it was just your average suburban high school of the time period. Close enough to the Pacific so you had your beach bums, a lot of people into souping up their cars and street racing. Your nerds, your preps, your jocks. They've been doing a lot of work there in recent years, with remodels and the like. I think but am not entirely sure that they destroyed a bunch of buildings that would have been historically interesting to us Beach Boys nuts.... Here's a page you may find interesting, it's a list of early 1960s slang compiled by people who were students at Hawthorne High: http://cougartown.com/slang.html Title: Re: Hawthorne High School Post by: NHC on October 08, 2014, 09:52:50 AM The high school has an alumni-type page of sorts that has a few comments from former classmates about the Wilsons.
Title: Re: Hawthorne High School Post by: NHC on October 08, 2014, 10:01:23 AM Seems like David lived in a different school district (even though he lived across the street from the Wilsons), but that may have been for elementary or junior high or whatever, not high school. He and Carl, who started at Hawthorne, attended the Hollywood Professional school for kids in show biz or from show biz families, which Marilyn and Diane Rovell also attended for a while.
Title: Re: Hawthorne High School Post by: Emdeeh on October 08, 2014, 10:35:22 AM Although David lived across the street from the Wilsons, in the '60s that side of the street was part of the city of Torrance (and annexed into Hawthorne after the freeway split the neighborhood up). They were likely in different school districts, but I expect David's young age was also a factor.

And yes, he went to a different school, but joined Carl at Hollywood Professional early on.Title: Re: Hawthorne High School Post by: Emdeeh on October 08, 2014, 10:57:31 AM Thanks, Jon, I just now realized I had the wrong town name.
Title: Re: Hawthorne High School Post by: Custom Machine on October 08, 2014, 07:44:11 PM Brian once stated, "Going to school isn't my fondest desire."
Title: Re: Hawthorne High School Post by: Mikie on October 08, 2014, 08:07:46 PM Yeah, but sittin' in class she set his soul on fire!
And I thought it was Carl that said that. Title: Re: Hawthorne High School Post by: the professor on October 08, 2014, 09:10:20 PM The 105 now splits the cities, Inglewood and Hawthorne, but I am not sure if it made a new border. Where both houses were is now freeway and environs. Dave's "house" is under the Freeway, so perhaps they shifted the border a few feet so that the 105 would be the formal border. No matter now, but when you stand there--or even drive over, as I will in the morning, you feel something......

Thanks for the link.
