Title: Alternate WIBN Issued in '80s
Post by: c-man on September 13, 2014, 07:36:13 AM
The version of "Wouldn't It Be Nice" included on "Made In USA" in '86 and "Still Cruisin'" ion '89 is obvisouly the wrong mix, but is the lead vocal a different take? I used to think so, and prided myself in immediately recognizing which version I would hear in the supermarket, but doing an A/B comparison recently, I can't really tell if Brian's lead is actually a different peformance or not. Call anyone else tell for sure?

It was actually Made in USA, not Made in California. Sounds like a different vocal take and only a single vocal overdub on top of it.

Uh yeah, "Made In USA".  :)

I'm pretty certain it's a different vocal take. It's not as "sweet" as the originally released version, but in fact I like the edge it has more than the polished one.

It's a different vocal take, and Mike's bridge is different as well (has some single-tracked and some double-tracked parts). The bridge is not spliced in like it is on the final PS version, so this is certainly an earlier mix.

That version appears as an alternate version on the PS box set. The MIUSA is the standard version (lyric-wise).

Nope. The MiUSA version is notable for a tinny-sounding middle eight.

It is a different take. A rough one at that. Don't know where Capitol got that one from. I often wondered why, if Capitol couldn't find the WIBN single mix, they didn't pull the master for "Sunshine Dream" since it has the correct mono mix on it. Guess they just didn't want to dig around. Mark L. said there were alot of flat copies of PS around, so who knows.

If memory serves, this version was also used in an episode of the Wonder Years around that time (late-80s/early-90s).

The easiest way to tell between the two vocals is the line "You know it's going to make it that much better".  In the regular version, the first word of that line is almost missing.  This alternate mix has the "you" almost highlighted.  Of course, the single/double tracking issues of Mike's solo part is also a dead giveaway.

As I said, personally, I prefer the rough one. Maybe I should make me a version with the MiUSA starting out, then the regular version starting from the middle eight.
