Title: The Smiley Smile board reconstructs the Beach Boys albums part 1: Sunflower
Post by: Wrightfan on September 04, 2014, 08:56:06 AM
What the title says. This is our atttempt to do our own track listings/fantasy albums based on our preferences. Here are the available songs. I will then see what the consesus is and tally up the tracks in running order in this post.

Songs that made the actual Sunflower :
Slip on Through
This Whole World
Add Some Music to Your Day
Got to Know the Woman
Deirdre
It's About Time
Tears in the Morning
All I Wanna Do
Forever
Our Sweet Love
At my Window
Cool, Cool Water

Songs that didn't make the cut but have been released otherwise:
San Miguel (GV Box set)
Celebrate the News (Single)
Loop de Loop (Flip Flop, Flyin' on an airplane) (Endless Harmony with re-recorded lead.)
Break Away (Single)
Cotton Fields (Single)
Soulful Old Man Sunshine (Endless Harmony and Made in California)
Games Two Can Play (GV Box set)
When Girls Get Together (Keepin' the Summer Alive)
Where is She? (Made in California. Demo.)
Susie Cincinatti (Single, 15 Big Ones, etc...)
Back Home (Made in California)
Fallin' In Love (Summer Love Songs, etc...)
Take a Load off your Feet (Surf's Up)
The Lord's Prayer (1963 track that was briefly in the running. Hawthorne, CA I believe.)

Songs that have been bootleged:
I'm Going Your Way AKA California Slide
Carnival AKA Over the Waves
Walkin' (Started in 1968, finished in 1969)

Songs that have not been bootleged:
What Can the Matter be?
You Never Give me your Money (Said to be more of a jam session)

One more clarification, you're doing this from top to bottom. So your first pick is the opening track and so on.

I wouldn't touch the album as is. I would, however, accompany it with a two-CD set of stuff from those sessions, padding it out with a handful of songs recorded just earlier and just after. Like this, for instance:

I love Sunflower but Tears... sticks out like a sore thumb and, though very nice, At My Window is one extra slice of saccharine too much.

Breakaway/Celebrate The News were both great, but to me just don't quite fit in with the Sunflower vibe (they feel more 20/20 to me, even if they were released too late to appear on that album).

Brian had some nice unreleased tunes during this period, however Games... and I Just Got My Pay are both fun but essentially throwaway. Where Is She is gorgeous but unfinished.

Anyway, Dennis was on fire during this period (not literally) and so my preferred track-list reflects this. To me, the following flows really nicely (especially that San Miguel intro coming in immediately after the abrupt tambourine shake that ends Our Sweet Love):

1. Slip On Through
2. This Whole World
3. Add Some Music...
4. Got To Know The Woman
5. Deirdre
6. It's About Time
7. Lady/Fallin' In Love
8. All I Wanna Do
9. Forever
10. Our Sweet Love
11. San Miguel
12. Cool Cool Water

That, to me, is one damn fine, top-notch, unbeatable, five-star album!!!

P.S. I think we ought to make it a provision that we all have to stick to TWELVE tracks when compiling track-lists.

P.S.

I think it is. It was on youtube at one point, but it got deleted before I could hear it.

This would have been a hell of an album:

01. Cottonfields (Single Version)
02. Slip on Through
03. This Whole World
04. Forever
05. Got to Know the Woman or San Miguel (¿?)
06. All I Wanna Do
07. It's About Time
08. Back Home
09. I'm Going Your Way
10. Soulful Old Man Sunshine
11. At my Window
12. Cool, Cool Water

It's a rocker Sunflower, more apropiate to those times I think. I cannot tolerate the inclusion of Tears In The Morning (I sometimes listen to the better alternate version or the instrumental) and Deirdre. At my Window is a great musical experiment, that's why I leave it.

The Lord's Prayer (1963 track that was briefly in the running. Hawthorne, CA I believe.)

B side of the "LSN" single, I believe.  :)

I got sick of listening to 'Tears' and 'GTKAW' on Sunflower, so I asked Judd to make me a tracklist that didn't include them. This is what he came up with (and it's now my favorite mix):

Slip On Through
This Whole World
Lady
All I Wanna Do
San Miguel
Celebrate The News

Add Some Music To Your Day
Deirdre
Forever
Our Sweet Love
At My Window
Cool, Cool Water

It has indeed. Much of what's on this comp has been officially released; only a few things haven't, but they are (or were) fairly readily available.

I'm afraid I'm one of those who like Tears...

Don't think I've seen that Reverberation boot before.  Bet some of those tracks have been released since and in better sound quality. After they're updated, it would make a great comp!

Yes, thanks AGD. I knew it had been released in 1963. Couldn't remember.

I will reveal my tracklisting in the next day or so.

I would keep Sunflower exactly as it is except for one change - replacing Tears in the Morning with San Miguel:

1.   Slip on Through
2.   This Whole World
3.   Add Some Music to Your Day
4.   Got to Know the Woman
5.   Deirdre
6.   It's About Time
7.   San Miguel
8.   All I Wanna Do
9.   Forever
10. Our Sweet Love
11. At my Window
12. Cool, Cool Water

7. This Whole World

I wouldn't change anything, I think Sunflower is perfect as it is. It's my all-time favorite album and I love every song on it. Yes, even Tears in the Morning, At My Window and Got To The the Woman.

However, if I really had to change anything, I would've made it a double LP. They had enough good new songs at the time to make it a double LP. And since many of the songs were more or less solo projects by different band members, it could've been The Beach Boys' very own White Album!

The double album concept is good. In your face White Album:

CD 1 SIDE 1
1. Slip On Through
2. This Whole World
3. Add Some Music...
4. Got To Know the Woman
5. San Miguel
6. I'm Going Your Way
7. I Just Got My Pay

CD 1 SIDE 2
1. The Lord's Prayer
2. Soulful Old Man Sunshine
3. Breakaway
4. Susie Cincinatti
5. Deirde
6. It's About Time

CD 2 SIDE 1
1. Celebrate The News
2. We're Together Again
3. All I Wanna Do
4. Forever
5. Our Sweet Love
6. Tears In The Morning

CD 2 SIDE 2
1. Games Two Can Play
2. Carnival
3. Sound Of Free
4. Lady
5. At My Window
6. Cool Cool Water

Reading this thread makes me pine again for a Sunflower release with all of the bonus tracks.

Got to Know the Woman and Tears in the Morning are the weakest songs for me. I would replace them with Susie Cincinnati and Lady. So something like:

Add Some Music
It`s About Time
This Whole World
Slip on Through
Susie Cincinnati
Lady
Deirdre
All I Wanna Do
Forever
Our Sweet Love
At My Window
Cool Cool Water

Sunflower was released late August thus anything recorded after that must be inadmissable, e.g. "Sound Of Free".

Yes, songs like that could be utilized to beef up the Surf's Up album, which I'm assuming will be part 2 of this thread.

I think Andrew was making reference to my double-album track-list. This thread - and other similar ones - always brings to mind that amazing sci-fi book where the guy goes back in time to try to help Brian finish Smile.
