Title: Rufus Wainwright Post by: Amy B. on August 16, 2014, 01:22:08 PM I've been listening to a lot of Rufus Wainwright again lately, and I just love his music. We all know the role Van Dyke Parks had in getting him a record deal, and Elton John called him the greatest songwriter on the planet. I'm not sure I'd go THAT far, but I think he's very under-appreciated as a songwriter but also a singer (though some people find his voice grating). Go or Go Ahead, Dinner at Eight, Cigarettes and Chocolate Milk...these are incredible works. Here's his Black Cab Sessions performance from 2012.

Title: Re: Rufus Wainwright Post by: Lowbacca on August 19, 2014, 04:43:56 AM I listened to him quite a bit a couple of years ago. Poses is a great album. He did cover "Wonderful/Song for Children" for a benefit compilation (War Child Heroes) as well.

Title: Re: Rufus Wainwright Post by: Amy B. on August 19, 2014, 07:04:06 AM He's one of those people who a lot of people still don't know about, after all this time. I think his melodies are beautiful, and the orchestrations are often so lush that you forget to pay attention to the lyrics. He's written a lot about addiction, misguided decadence and hedonism, etc. His song "I Don't Know What It is" is about emerging from addiction. I love this stripped down performance of it.
