This here forum has 2880 registered members since 12/24/05. The following info probably won't surprise you at all, but anyhoo...

1112 (38.6 %) have never posted at all...

478 (16.6%) have 100 or more posts...

170 (5.9%) have posted 500 times or more...

102 (3.5%} have made 1000 or more posts...

30 (1%) have made 2500 posts or more...

7 (0.02%) have posted 5000 times or more.

Time for breakfast, I think...

It took me a few seconds to realize that the remaining percentage you mention has posted between 1 and 99 times.

Ouch!  And ouch again!  So this means I'm currently somewhere around the top 5% of posters?? 

For the sake of my reputation (excluding those who read this board), the fact that I have now made 682 posts to the Beach Boys Smiley Smile message board must not get out to the general public.

My only defense, and it's a weak one, (sorta like being pulled over for excessive speeding and telling the cop "But, but, there are some people who were going even faster than me!") is that there is some guy in the UK who has made over 14,000 posts, and then, on his day off no less, went to the trouble of posting about pulling stats on the number of posts by registered members since 12/14/2005!  And, while said individual has a well deserved reputation for getting cranky at times, he is also an extremely knowledgable and highly regarded BB historian who has refrained from hijacking threads with off topic posts about whiskey, beer, loudspeakers, and other audio components, all offenses of which this poster is guilty.

And it's after 3 AM on the West Coast, time for me to stop keeping "Brian Wilson hours" (at least as he was known for doing in the sixties) and hit the hay.

But first, I'll explain why I'm up so late.  Read an ad this evening for an upcoming concert for the San Diego Brewers Guild Craft Beer and Reggae Festival at Harrah's Resort Southern California, featuring "Tribal Seeds, Konu, & Mike Love".  Double checking, thinking there is no way "our" Mike Love would appear at at a reggae festival with the Tribal Seeds (no relation to the sixties Seeds featuring Sky Saxon or the nineties Lightening Seeds) I spent way too much time on the net and not only rediscovered that for a number of years there is a country singer "Mike Love", but now there is a Hawaiian Reggae "Jawaiian" singer named (or going by the name of) Mike Love.  Check it out at http://www.mikelovemusic.com.  Probably not the son of Steve Love, but ...

Didn't this board have a melt-down prior to that 2005 date and all posts were lost? So perhaps they were pre 05 members who never posted again.

Yeah, otherwise that's a crass percentage. :P

The board did indeed pitch a major hissyfit, but when the dust had settled, everyone had to re-register  Thus, those 1112 people registered on 12/24/05, or later... but have never posted.

In the light of recent and past events, can't say I entirely blame them.

I don't think that's it. There's probably just a large percentage of people of prefer to 'lurk' and just read the board. We provide enough entertainment for that being a well-grounded assumption. ;D

I never thought it was roughly a third of registered users, though. Come to think of it - you don't have to register in order to read the board. Oh well..

and here i thought i was lazy! actually, these stats are symptomatic of most boards, music or otherwise. a small, but passionate percentile keep the boards alive, and you get the impression of lots of traffic. i'm on six different boards (two comics and four music), and this board does rather well. i am really surprised that you can keep coming up with topics on only one band. the most colorful and interesting band of all, but still...

A lot of people read the boards, that's all that matters

It's not how many... it's who.

These are lean days compared with, say, 10-15 years ago: back then I was on Ego, Smile Shop, the Bloo, the Cab, American Band and BBB, not forgetting the PSML and SUML. Now... here is pretty much where it's at. On the current Bloo and BBB, days can pass without anyone posting. Not been to SDV2 for... oh, months.

That said, I think the quality here is as high as ever, occasional outbreaks of asshattery aside. The level of tolerance... ah, that's something else entirely.

Let's check out some of the registered user names on the sidelines and guess who it might be, shall we? :-D

If I recall, Mr. Doe & the pack of others had decided to leave the board & did it. Then came along back, shortly thereafter. Some intolerance of board atmosphere, I think.

Come on Andrew, plenty of us are using it on a regular basis.  You just don't notice, because we aren't asking stupid questions, and do check there first Before posting.  Therefore no need to.  Bare with the posters that live in the text-world of instant answers, with little or no work/research.  You know, AnswersNOW.com...  Howto.com, cause they can't do a damn thing without it.  The screen is too small, or you're using the wrong color...  And no, they don't read signatures either.  Do you have a counter on the site, I haven't noticed.  That would answer that question. ;D
