Title: Having Fun with Mike on Stage
Post by: alf wiedersehen on August 09, 2014, 03:25:27 PM
(http://i1268.photobucket.com/albums/jj563/paintedteeth/cover3_zps3f04ba65.jpg)

While having a conversation about the worst live albums of all time - spurred on by the live C50 record, of course - I said "At least it's not Having Fun with Elvis on Stage" and this gave me an idea. One thing led to another, I commissioned Judd, and now it's a thing.

For those of you that don't know, Wikipedia says:
Quote
The album is unique among Elvis' recordings as it does not contain any actual songs: it consists entirely of byplay recorded between numbers, although Elvis is frequently heard humming or singing "Well...", which during the actual performances led into songs that have been edited out of this recording. Much of the album consists of Elvis making jokes, with the material spliced in a manner that has been described as lacking continuity and nearly devoid of comprehensibility, let alone humor.

Judd and I are going to work on this and make this an actual thing that you can download for some reason. This will take some time, so please do be patient. In the meantime, maybe you can help us out and tell us your favorite on-mic Mike moments.

Saw BB's in a baseball staduim in New Hampshire many years ago. The stage was against the outfield wall and Mike turned around and looked at the forest in the back of the stage and mused "I think we've played here before....or was that in Maine? Ah well, all Pine trees look alike".

Oh, there'll be some "Wheeeeeeeeen"s, much like Elvis' "Weeeelllll"s.

Including him teaching the audience to sing "Country Pie" followed by two and a half minutes of silence for you to sing it yourself.

Mike's got some real nuggets from this '83 show in Seattle

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qldS3R0_w6o

Mike at 3:33: "Is everybody ready? For what? What we're gonna do right now is what we call our...our fantastic internationally acclaimed automotive classics, you know. This series of songs is kind of a tribute to the cars we drove in on today, yeah. Alright..ok. But we want everybody to help rev up the engines! Everybody say erghhh! Everybody a lil bit louder. Erghhh!"

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BEwY-hSY8oo

Mike at 3:09 (as Dennis rises behind the drums): "Dennis Wilson, our drummer, ladies & gentlemen. Stripping for the audience here. Just put the dollars in his trunks, that's all. Wait a second. What're you doing? Look at this guy. Tarzan! Tarzan Wilson, ladies & gentlemen."

Don't forget the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame speech as it is performed in front of a live audience.

I have 5 volumes of Having Fun With Elvis On Stage. The remaining four are fan made of course.

One of the jokes from 1993:

You know someone said to me the other day, `Your songs really remind me of California.`
I thought, `That`s funny, I don`t remember writing any songs about drive-by shootings!`

 :-D

1993 Paramount. Something like:

"Not too many bands had the nerve to write a song about vegetables but we did. And I think... we're proud of it"

Then he also had "Is that a demonstration or a request?" in the 60s and early 70s.

"We're going to sing this song acapella which means nude"

Several examples of him introducing the next song as beingnoriginally called "California Girls Are All Pregnant" but we shortened it…

Yes! I want this.

+1

But this could be a long, long project.

Maybe you better start out with "The Best of" then next "More of", "Even More of", The Best of Vol. II....

I've heard an '82 concert in NY ( They were at Westbury I think) and he was comparing California with NY lead up to BTTYS and said the only things that grows in NY are Puerto Ricans....

I think his version of Imagine should be on that.

The joke about Stamos's Mom is a must as well.

Hey, that's a really good idea! I always enjoyed Mike's banter on stage. Corny or not, it's still funny. Major thumbs-up, 2 Js!

Don`t forget his introduction of Algonquin Q. Jardine from Leid in Hawaii, or the Spanish intro to Bluebirds on the 69 live album...or Mike saying something in Spanish, then "whoops wrong language" at the 68 Paris Olympia show.
