Title: Beach Boys - Japan 1966 Unpublished Tour Photos: At Auction
Post by: guitarfool2002 on August 09, 2014, 09:48:49 AM
With Ian's terrific posts of interviews and photos deep from the archives, I happened to see this current auction coming up this month at Heritage. 24 Unpublished photos of the '66 Japan tour and other related shots. They're starting the bid at $1,000...kind of steep? Unfortunately the auction listing doesn't separate the photos, and has them in a collage.

Interesting point from the auction lot: One photo shows the "Party!" album encased in an ice sculpture. That may be one of the ultimate collectables because it was only around as long as the ice remained intact, as soon as it melted the item was lost...just kidding.  ;D  Didn't know they did ice sculptures like that in '66.

Here's a link directly to the auction listing. Search "Beach Boys", just a few modern signed guitars that are "bleh".

Something I'm curious about, and I don't think the listing mentions this but maybe it's in the terms of the sale once you buy it.

Does the buyer of these photos also "buy" the rights to usage, publishing, and reproduction? In other words, if I bought these could I then reproduce them and either publish or sell them in some way for profit, or are the images still controlled by an interest like BRI? Obviously the buyer would own the actual unpublished photos, but does that buyer get the rights to use them as well?

If I had to guess, I'd say it's the same set of Photos that Rockaway tried to sell , In June, as listed on Ebay UK:

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/BEACH-BOYS-1966-Set-Of-24-Unpublished-Photographs-Japan-Tour-/380919819207

That ad included this disclaimer:  >>The photographer is unknown and no copyright or other rights are included. <<

Fairly certain they were offered prior to Ebay, on Rockaway's own site for $1500( just from memory, as I didn't save the link)

The buyer REALLY has to want these, with a 25% buyer's premium added....

Thank you for that info! Want an answer on something Beach Boys related...just ask on this board!  ;D

Same lot of photos, I guess they're trying their luck on the high-end auction block after the other sales didn't work out. And that definitely clarifies the copyright/use thing...buy the photos, look at 'em and enjoy them: Not much you can do with them beyond that if you can't use them!

Check out the signed BB-related guitar auctions for a laugh. I won't say anything else about them.  ;)

The one Brian signed gitar was SO nice! some cheap Chinese knockoff, accompanied by proof of Brian shown signing a completely different guitar. PHEW!! How Lucky can someone be?

Did see that Blondie's BW portrait has a $400 bid...

Those pictures from the first heyday of the group are always fascinating!
