From what a review I read, it seems it's only a "relative" failure, and possibly will be a success in the long term. Seems baby boomers (JB's core audience) don't rush to movies on opening weekends, which makes sense - at their age, who wants to fight the crowds? :) Rather, they wait a couple of weeks and catch it at a matinee. So it's expected to be one of those "sleeper" stories, with some lasting success. I'm sure the DVD/BluRay release will do just fine. Valli still performs so he gets promotion also.

Any production that shoots in CA is eligible for tax breaks, just like productions apply for New York credits when shot in New York. Heck, I'm sure Brian's production applied for it and maybe got it, since it was shot in the state.
