Title: THE ultimate Do you wanna dance query-
Post by: kookadams on June 24, 2014, 12:34:26 AM
When the Ramones covered Do You Wanna Dance it was done as the BBs arrangement not the Bobby Freeman orig right?

I sometimes think that all Ramones songs are speeded up Beach Boys songs.

Never thought the two groups shared a lot of similarities. To be honest I don't really get the whole BB/punk connection.

It's not that I don't believe you I just think it's pretty blatant, at least as far as the first couple Beach Boys albums are concerned.  I'm definitely not knocking you tho.  :)

Listen to "Little Honda" again.

Alright, I can hear it in Little Honda or Shut Down. Only in individual songs, though. I mean stuff like All Summer Long (the song) could hardly be any further away from punk.

Saw Mike, Bruce and Dave a few years back and the show started - and kept up for a good half hour or so - at a punk-like intensity. It was a great show. Finished off that way too. Everyone was on their feet.

Just listen to this songs and tell me you don't get a "Beach Boys vibe" from them. They are speeded up and less sofisticated (specially vocally), but the resemblance is there (of course there other influences like Rock n' Roll, Spector, etc.). The Ramones were huge Beach Boys fans, "Do You Wanna Dance" it's just one example.

Weird, I would put something like "All Summer Long" in the same pile as something as "Little Honda" etc. as probably influencing a band like the Ramones. The connection between the Beach Boys and the Ramones is pretty strong, to me, and I like them both a lot.

OK, I do hear some more similarities now. Thanks for all the links, beacharg.

I think I just tend to focus a lot on the arrangements when I listen to a song such as All Summer Long. You know, I hear the instrumentation, I hear lots of innocent fun, young voices, careful production. All of that, to me, is a bit hard to connect with punk as I see it. Will definitely pay some more attention to the similarities whenever I hear something by the Ramones in the future.

in one of the country bands I was in, we were running through all the songs as if they were Ramones tunes so they would sink in with our bassist who came from playing punk mostly. then we'd slow 'em down.

Have any of you guys thought about the Beach Boys / Van Halen -connection? The influence is pretty strong and obvious. Those early Van Halen records are full of great, youthful harmonies, and DLR and Mike both are similarly cool but goofy frontmen. Also, both bands are led by musical geniuses who lost the plot at some point.

...so is Bruce BB's Sammy Hagar?

Both bands also include members who are brothers.  :)

Yep, it all makes sense to me. And don't forget that there's a very proto-punky, speeded up, rockin' version of "Roller Skating Child" from a live BBs concert (with Brian on bass, IIRC) that could make that connection from the other direction (i.e. the Boys pulling "a Ramones").

Is this thread about "Do You Wanna Dance," or the Ramones?   :)

If it's truly about the song, check out this version by Dave Edmunds from the "Porky's Revenge" movie soundtrack:

http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=LpeEBUsR1So

It's an almost note-for-note re-creation of Brian's arrangement.
