Great band by the way. They broke up eight years ago, but they did three reunion shows last month, one of which I went to.

I'm loving all this stuff.  Explorers Club has been a favorite for a while.  kwan_dk, great harmonies on your album.  I'd love to keep a running list of bands/albums that have released BB homage albums.  I've actually got a playlist that I populate with good BB homage tracks and no Beach Boys.  Please, all, keep adding to this list!

Never noticed this before, but "She's So Fine" from American Graffiti owes a lot to "Don't Hurt My Little Sister".

"Leave Here a Stranger" by Starflyer 59
They mixed this album in mono in homage to Pet Sounds.  They sound nothing like the Beach Boys, but some of the instrumentation and feel brings Pet Sounds to mind.

A Man Called E   by E.     This album has a lot of Beach Boys influence (IMO) and sounds incredibly Pet Soundsy in places (IMO again).   

In 1966 with the BBs releasings their greatest works with pet sounds & good vibrations even tho brian had retired from touring two years prior at least they were still able to tour and promote their new music unlike the beatles who the same month revolver was issued they retired from touring and one of their bogus copouts was "the music we were making couldnt be performed live"... the BBs may have had help from hal blaine, glenn campbell, carole kaye, bill strange, jerry cole, steve douglas etc but STILL trudged along . The beatles problem was not wanting to bring their studio help on the stage and not giving them the cred they deserved and of course NOT being able to produce their own records/ george martin was to the beatles what jim henson was to the muppets/ ha

Not true, they were just fed up of being screamed at on stage to the point where neither band nor crowd could hear a note of music being played.

The BBs did not give a crap about their live show during this period with sloppy shows.

Pardon me if this isn't exactly what you had in mind...but I think The United States of America's self-titled 1968 debut album is in many ways what SMiLE would've been. Very experimental music, with songs expressing the dark undercurrents of Western society and the more primal side of love. Compare Wonderful, which many consider a song about a rape victim which conveys the feeling of regret and eventual acceptance, to Garden of Earthly Delights, describing a scene of dangerous plants "in her eyes" and conveying the feeling of primal lust.

SMiLE definitely has a sinister edge to it, but it's buried in the beautiful harmonies and obtuse lyrics so upon first listen a lot of it could be overlooked. USA dives right in, and the experimental synth sounds only accentuate the subject matter. Aside from that, the chief difference is USA calls out modern society for its hypocrisy (I Won't Leave My Wooden Wife for you, Sugar) and shallowness (American Way of Love), mediocrity (Stranded in Time) and soul-sucking wickedness (American Metaphysical Circus, Where is Yesterday.) SMiLE describes the abuses of nature, Chinese laborers, women and Indian culture in America's past. But it sticks to the past. It's more hopeful, as if saying that we the current generation don't have to make those same mistakes.

Maybe this wasn't the kind of submission you were looking for, but I always found the connection between these two obscure albums to be really fascinating.

I always thought there was a link between Forever Changes and Pet Sounds as well. Both are deeply personal statements from Arthur Lee and Brian Wilson, respectively. Both utilized Wrecking Crew musicians, were major creative breakthroughs over their respective preceeding albums and both underperformed. I read a bio on Arthur Lee, and while Pet Sounds isn't listed as an influence, I'd be shocked if it wasn't in some capacity.

I bought this album about 20 years ago and it is simply brilliant. They were a great band, who appeared in American Graffiti, Apocalypse Now and Happy Days. They released two or three albums and this was their best, their only summer-themed album. Great harmonies, great grooves and great to play when the sun shines. They cover Summer Means Fun, which was previously recorded by Jan & Dean and Bruce & Terry, while tracks like Time Will Tell, Hot Summer Girls and Rock And Roll Menace are outstanding. Sadly, the three main members of the group, including 'Flash' died some time ago, while the group continues to this day, but with only one original member, Butch, I think.

It is a must-buy album for any Beach Boys fan.

I also forgot to mention Did You Boogie With Your Baby, which was not included on the original release, butI thinks included on their album on iTunes. Another great track.

There's also the debut album from the Dukes of Surf, hailing from Hawaii. It's so cheesy and over-the-top 'stick to the formula' 80s Beach Boys-sounding that I actually enjoy it quite a lot in a perverse sort of way. :-)

I mean no disrespect saying this, but honestly, it's as if these guys sat down and said, "OK, let's write Mike Love's favourite album!"  :lol
