Title: Brian's next tour should be with....
Post by: Lonely Summer on May 11, 2014, 12:12:52 AM
Reading all this talk about how Brian and Beck did not hit it off because Brian is not a talker, a mixer, reminds me so much of comments I've read by artists that have toured with another songwriting legend from the 60's. So since Brian prefers to keep to himself, and doesn't want to be bothered with unnecessary small talk, I say, let's put him on the road with another quiet guy, Bob Dylan. Maybe they could even do some recording together. I'm not sure how Brian's sweet melodies and smooth harmonies would mess with Bob's scratchy sandpaper and gravel voice, and bluesy 3 chord  wordy style, but I'd sure tune in for a listen.

There's probably a reason these guys (Brian + Beck, Brian + Dylan) didn't collaborate when they were young. I see no good reason why they should do it now.

Perhaps he shouldn't share a tour with another musician. How about a comedian of Brian's choice?

Poor Jeff couldn't interact with Brian after the show. Hasn't he heard of groupies? ;)

How about David Gilmour? I feel like the two set format would work beautifully for the two of them. David is a pretty mellow guy who could do either acoustic or electric sets, and Dark Side is one of Brian's all time favorites.

I like that idea. Brian should tour with a comedian, then we'll have world peace.

No, No, No! That's a guy that never shuts up! We want Brian with someone he'd be comfortable with - a quiet guy that doesn't party, chit-chat, and all that other stuff Brian dislikes. A guy that will just show up and do the show, then go home. I still think Bob is the right guy. He doesn't talk much - doesn't have to, says it all in his songs.

Al Jardine, Mike Love, David Marks, Bruce Johnston, Blondie Chaplin and all,

This would be my first and only choice. There's an undeniable chemistry and magic between the aforementioned individuals, even now with them in their 60s and 70s, and even with the interpersonal difficulties that have long plagued them. When the music starts, everything else seems to evaporate. :) However...

Nobody. He has toured enough.

Seems like Brian said a year or two ago that he didn't expect to be touring for many more years because he felt he's getting too damned old to do so. If he officially announced tomorrow that 2014 would be the last year he would perform live on a regular basis (or at all), I could respect his decision. We've seen more of him live in the past 15 years than anyone previously imagined we'd see, and, as such, IMHO, he doesn't owe anyone anything.

That said, I doubt he'd throw in the metaphorical towel on music altogether, and if he wanted to concentrate exclusively on writing, recording (which I can conceive of him doing right 'til the end because it's arguably part of his DNA) and releasing new material on his own (technically speaking, nobody needs a record label at this point. Yes, it's nice to have big bucks backing your efforts -even if they come from a legion of attorneys who don't know or care at all about music- but it's not required), he could do so.

Sorry... rambling... :-[

The Monkees. I don't think it would work from a financial perspective, but I'm sure Brian could have fun with Micky Dolenz, and the fan base would be relatively compatible.

Exactly.  Maybe a couple of one-off gigs here and there* but I think it's time that he packs it in.

*And those gigs could be with Macca, Jeff Lynne, Tom Petty, or Lindsey Buckingham.  ;D

Straight from the heart?  The Beach Boys.

I'm sorry, I know that's probably not what the OP meant by "Brian's next tour should be with....," but darn it if this isn't the first thought that enters my mind (and the only collaboration that really, truly excites me).

It's nearly summer time.  As much as I love Brian Wilson as an act all on his own, it's that time of year again where my thoughts turn to the 'Boys, and I just can't help it.

How about Brian Setzer.  Two Brian's for the price of one.   BW's Rock album could stem from such a pairing.

Post by: Lonely Summer on May 17, 2014, 02:00:48 PM
Of  course Brian should be touring with Mike, Al, David and the guy in the shorts, but that time apparently has passed. I just thought the pairing of Bob and Brian would work because neither one wants to do a lot of talking, socializing, and Beck was put off by Brian not doing those things. They might even have more in common that is apparent at first glance. Brian did his Gershwin album a few years ago, and it appears that Bob might be doing an album of standards now. How about the two of them harmonizing (if you can call it that, lol) on "Blue Moon"? "I'll Be Home For Christmas"? And we need a live version of "Spirit of Rock and Roll".

Brian is going to be brainwashed into becoming Mike's "monkey boy #2" alongside Bruce, and they're all going to play in a band alongside 5 clones of Adrian Baker.

No offense but does anyone aside from Mike understand the concept of a tour making money? These fantasy line-ups are just that....A fantasy. The C50 was a one-off with a large tour party. Backing up who we watched on stage were probably another dozen behind the scenes not to mention the hundreds of hours in administration arranging everything before the tour even started.

The licensed BB's has cut expenses to the bone to cater to the small venues and markets they play. Simple. Every extra person added to a band adds costs to the bottom line and deters promoters to book artists.

Not a chance. Another thing, many of these names probably have not played a BB song in years. The M&B line-up is it for now. Should, and I say should some kind of PS50 happen in 2016 I wonder if Brians group will get a look in now. I would see a few select dates with an orchestra and Mikes group.

Kinda hard for Mike Meros to be in the front line unless Brian plays a show in Heaven.  And Daryl Dragon should be added to that lineup, as he's getting ready to play the Heaven gig too.

I don't know that I can live with the idea of Brian, seated behind an unplayed keyboard, in shorts, constantly adjusting his mic and clapping to every song. But I guess that's not any worse than a skinny Brian, dancing zombie-like, singing "Nightime".

Nice, they are on Youtube! Of little that I heard, I liked the song called "Pray for Sun". It's catchy & riveting, with cool enough vox. But great? Not in the slightest, at least not how I define the word. Thanks anyway for introducing this band, way to expand my comp library.

As a fan of The Traveling Wilburys and The Highwaymen, and to a lesser extent the Eric Clapton's Crossroad Guitar Festivals and the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame jams, I wish that Brian would be part of a supergroup. Now before you have any Jeff Beck-like visions of Brian sitting on a couch doing nothing, think about it for a minute.

What if it was four or five man group of carefully chosen musicians, musicians that, at least one or two of them, Brian would be comfortable with. The group would have to have a take-charge leader who could "bring out" the unique talents of each member. Maybe Brian's role in the group would be to start off the songs with some basic chords or a melody. Obviously they would look to him for the vocal arrangements. The group would maybe be comprised of older musicians, of varied instruments, and of course have a mutual admiration of each others' work. And, probably being older musicians, they might not be contractually obligated to be churning out solo albums every few months which would give them the free time necessary for such a project.

How does a group comprised of Brian Wilson, Elton John, Paul Simon, Bob Dylan, and Neil Young sound? For a one-off album and short tour? OK, it's time to go back to the room... :o :hat

I'd like to see Brian work with Elvis, but not that one. The other Elvis could've done a smash up job on "Sail On, Sailor" or "Darlin".
