Post by: joshferrell on May 05, 2014, 11:15:39 AM
In my world music class I'm going to do a talk about Van Dyke Parks and his career, I'm going to talk about his solo stuff as well as the stuff he did with Brian, I'm going to play some solo stuff and a couple interviews he did about Brain and Smile.. I'm not going to play any beach boys stuff but am going to play "Wings of a Dove" from Orange Crate Art...wish me luck and I'll let you know how it went... ;D

Good luck! I am just finishing up a World Music class and I wrote my thesis about Brian Wilson and how his music and work in the studio impacted several different types of music, not all of them obvious.

Good luck and if you are doing a power point presentation, you mighty consider showing his very impressive IMDB page.  Check it out! My favorite credit is Hoagy the Piano player in one of my very favorite movies, "Popeye!"  Good luck!

One lady said she liked it, a couple others said it sounded like Disney music, and the teacher said (sarcastic) that Van Dyke makes it very OBVIOUS through his music that he hangs out with Brian Wilson and Harry Nilsson as if he's showing off that fact  (I'm paraphrasing)

Hey Josh,

I'm sorry to hear of that response. VERY unprofessional. We're in trouble if people like this are TEACHING.

We ought to send AGD over there to "explain" things to this guy.  :)

Aye, think the teacher ought to be considering those words carefully. VDP has always struck me as a "hand that guides"-type … a name dropper occasionally, perhaps unconsciously, but an incredible talent, occasionally flamboyant in his musical styles but also generous and benevolent.

So who did Teach hang out with?

To be honest, I can see why your teacher didn't like Van Dyke - it's his voice that gives major attack to ears, too thin & gallant. But musically his stuff is very interesting, many unexpected dissonant moments & quirks. Nevertheless, I totally don't get the love for "Clang of the Yankee Reaper", just not my cup of tea.
Anyway, what mark did you get, Josh? A big "A"?

2EgoHanger: good luck on your thesis; very good choice.

Sorry it didn't go as well as your enthusiasm.  There is a lot that is just garbage written about Disney and his music. I used it heavily because Walt used a lot of authentic stuff, and Peter and The Wolf is one one those gems.  I'll try to copy this correctly...It is Prokofiev and Walt Disney.  It originally aired on The Wonderful World of Disney, and I showed it often in class to show the relationship between traditional fairy/folk tales and to show the authenticity of the music with the animation.  Disney was the real deal.  :love

But, in school, they teach democracy, but it isn't a democracy, so one needs to "play the game" to get a degree.  And, Parks is accomplished outside of the BB sphere.  Check his imdb page out.

Remember that Brian got a bad grade for Surfin' - and here we are now.   ;)
