Title: Best (sheet) Music Book?
Post by: VanDykeParksAndRec on April 11, 2014, 11:36:10 AM
I have had a very hard time locating accurate sheet music, primarily Today-Smiley Smile era.  Does anyone know of good/accurate sources?

I'm interested in this as well.  In my measly search efforts, I haven't found a Beach Boys sheet-music book worthy of a Beatles one I've played from.

As far as chords go, http://surfermoon.com/ (http://surfermoon.com/) has always been good to me.  :)

The best BB music book ever is the Sunflower/Surf's Up folio. True chords, good bass lines and even some written background vocals. Almost everything else is incorrect or incomplete.

Long time lurker, first time poster.

http://www.amazon.com/Beach-Boys-Guitar-Anthology-Series/dp/0769204317/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1397544759&sr=8-1&keywords=guitar+anthology+series+the+beach+boys (http://www.amazon.com/Beach-Boys-Guitar-Anthology-Series/dp/0769204317/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1397544759&sr=8-1&keywords=guitar+anthology+series+the+beach+boys)

This is probably one of the more accurate collections of BB sheet music, but it's limited to 24 of their greatest hits/better known songs from 1962-1966. Guitar chords and leads, melody lines and harmony vocals. Stumbled across it locally a decade or so ago and grabbed it for fear I'd never see it ever again.

This is (I think) the one that shadownoze is referring to. Have this one as well and concur with what was said about it.

Also have this one...

http://www.amazon.com/WB-Beach-Complete-Songbook-Vol-1/dp/B0009IY4AA/ref=sr_1_7?ie=UTF8&qid=1397545449&sr=8-7&keywords=the+beach+boys+complete (http://www.amazon.com/WB-Beach-Complete-Songbook-Vol-1/dp/B0009IY4AA/ref=sr_1_7?ie=UTF8&qid=1397545449&sr=8-7&keywords=the+beach+boys+complete)

It's a mixed bag. A few songs are correct or sufficiently so to be useful and the rest... not so much. The selections also seem somewhat random.

The link ThyRavenAscend offered is probably the best online resource. If you've got your BB collection handy on iTunes or whatever and access to that website, it's a good place to start.

sounds like it would be a great project to finally document in tab/music or vocal score of this great group....

maybe it hasn't happened in the past cos no one can really work out 'their' music????.....

im sick of the 'busker' books and songs not even presented in the right key.....

I do have a couple......... and they suck...

I bought the Beach Boys Complete in the States in 1990.  On holiday from the UK I was thrilled with it as I only had a greatest hits songbook.  I also loved the fact that it had stuff from the 70s in it.  The Surfer Moon website is fantastic for the chords.  I also have several books, the latest I got was

http://www.amazon.co.uk/The-Little-Black-Songbook-Lyrics/dp/386543634X/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1397557704&sr=8-4&keywords=Beach+boys+chord+book

It seems pretty decent for the money, good selection, has more complex chords and diagrams.  And I'm also looking at Stack O Tracks just now which is also a pretty decent booklet (better with the lp sized version!).

i agree the best overall music book is the sunflower/surfs up one.  i play piano and like playing their arrangements of at my window, our sweet love, a day in the life of a tree, cool cool water etc.  besides that book its hard to recommend anything more than the odd song here and there from all the other books including the old songbooks from the '60s.  but the music book that covers 15 big ones / love you did teach me had to phone 'ya & i wanna pick you up & airplane fairly well.  in one of the big comprehensive songbooks there's a very good arrangement of when i grow up to be a man, and in another book let's go away for awhile & warmth of the sun are worthwhile.  again i'm speaking entirely from a piano playing standpoint.  i learned darlin' from the original stack-o-tracks L.P.  printed music insert.  lastly the sheet music for good timing will prove very helpful

wouldn't it be nice if somebody took 30 minutes to scan and upload their Sunflower/Surf's Up/Love You/Stack-o-Tracks etc books

there's a little black songbook series (on a number of artsits) of song guitar chords, here's a link to the one on The Beach Boys w/ 90 titles:

There are the vocal charts to 43 songs, presented in various formats, here: http://okeverybody.com/beach_boys
They are for the most part very accurate and I used to use them while recording as a reference to help develop my ear.

This is fantastic, thanks a lot for passing along this link!!  This message board rocks
