Title: See what Country song was #1 on the day you were born
Post by: Spiritinthesky on April 08, 2014, 10:05:21 AM
Bit of fun this, but I do like the old country stuff.

My song is -  Jerry Reed - She Got the Goldmine (I Got the Shaft).

Country songs have some great song titles!

That's a great song, Jerry Reed was so cool.  Right before he died, he did an album and donated all the money from it to the families of wounded veterans.

Mine was "I've Always Been Crazy" by Waylon Jennings.  Hell yeah!

"I've always been crazy, and the truobles that It's put me through
Been busted for things, that I did, and I didn't do
I can't say I'm proud of all of the things that I've done
But I can say I've never intentionally hurt anyone

I've always been different, with one foot over the line
Winding up somewhere one step ahead or behind
it ain't been so easy, but I guess that I shouldn't complain
I've always been crazy, but It's kept me from going insane"

Where The Green Grass Grows - Tim McGraw

Though I'm really not a fan of Country Music.
I do know Candle In The Wind was the number 1 hit when I was born.

To All the Girls I've Loved Before - Willie Nelson with Julio Iglesias

One of the few things of Willie's that I don't like. But anyway, the melody sticks in your ear

Not being a fan of Country, i checked the US pop charts instead and came up with Peggy Lee singing "Manana (Is good Enough For Me)". How true.

I agree that "Heartbreak Hotel" is the coolest so far.

"Let Old Mother Nature Have Her Way" - by Carl Smith.  I don't recall ever hearing it, but it is still popular enough to be on youtube.  It's worth a listen.  While there check out Waylon's intro to him, saying he based his look on Carl.  There's even a duet.  Some of his other songs I do recognize, and remember him on Country TV shows.
Wish I could have gotten a Conway!  He was a favorite in the early 70's.  Check out "The Image of Me" or one of his duets with Loretta, "Louisiana Woman, Mississippi Man."  Conway was a rocker in the 50's that moved into Country.
Most of you are getting artists I'm familiar with.  Jerry Reed could always brighten up a room.  Tim McGraw is from Alto, about twenty miles from where I was born.  Don't know that song though.  Yeah, Gregg you got a classic, and Tennessee Ernie Ford too - not sure how much he's remembered these days, but he was big in the 60's.  Josh, I'd have to look that one up.  Waylon, Hell Yeah!  I loved it when Neil brought him in to do duets on Old Ways back in '85.   And Zach got someone I still think is one of the best Country singers out there.  George took the top prize the other night on the Country Awards Show.  He's Real Country.
Rocker, I like Willie - but that track is... - better left unsaid.  Sure you were hoping for a Elvis number.  My fondest memory of Willie is an old B&W clip when he had short slicked back hair doing "Crazy."  I've got to go get another cup of coffee, and look up the others.  Right now I'm listening to Mike Nesmith:  "Five O'clock on a Texas Morning"...
.
Okay Josh, I checked that.  You're right, not too good...just a lot of name checking lyrics.  He has his "Mike" on.

That Time McGraw song is alright, but that one and the Willie song are the two weakest so far.  You two have really, really overcome some obstacles in your life starting out with a song like that  ;D

Well if ever there was a thread that gave away our ages this is it, but I'll play along.

Mine was "Ace in the Hole" by George Strait. Not bad, but I went to Wiki page of the song to look at the charts table & wow, under "preceded" I see Alabama's "High Cotton"! It is one of my fave country songs ever, the clip for that is also very good, nice showcase of friendship. Check it on YouTube (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IhsbhbnKoR0).

Btw, Mr. Spiritinthesky, you have a very cool Polish surname. It hides inside the words "Spirit in the sky". You must be happy.

He Loves Me All the Way - Tammy Wynette

Never the biggest Tammy fan, but Lord knows I love her compared with what rules the charts these days.
