Title: Beach Boys Survivor #23 Winner: The Trader Post by: pixletwin on March 05, 2014, 11:37:29 AM Welcome back to a new round of BEACH BOYS SURVIVOR. Remember to be respectful of others opinions. Please don't spam the thread with too much opinionating (a little is ok :D ).... and without further ado...
Quote Holland is the nineteenth studio album by the American rock group The Beach Boys, released in January 1973. It was recorded in Baambrugge, Netherlands over the summer of 1972 using a reconstructed studio sent from California, and with two Brian Wilson tracks rush-recorded in Los Angeles and added to the album at the last minute. As usual vote for your least favorite track. The track with the most votes gets voted off. Tally on March 7th Sail On, Sailor Steamboat California Saga: Big Sur California Saga: The Beaks of Eagles California Saga: California The Trader Leaving This Town Only with You Funky Pretty Mount Vernon and Fairway (A Fairy Tale) My least favorite on this one is easy: The Beaks of Eagles Title: Re: Beach Boys Survivor #23: Holland Post by: Shady on March 05, 2014, 11:38:58 AM Beaks of eagles

. "California Saga: The Beaks of Eagles" will set a record for how fast it flies away. What made them think this would work? Maybe should have considered going with an instrumental after the first play-back. I appreciated when they released Ten Years of Harmony and tracked "California" to follow "It's A Beautiful Day." "California" had such a different feel after being cut away from "Beaks of Eagles." The only Beach Boys track I was ever embarrassed to play when my friends were over. Everybody rolled their eyes. Made side one pretty much a two track and flip. Title: Re: Beach Boys Survivor #23: Holland Post by: bluesno1fann on March 05, 2014, 01:06:34 PM California Saga - The Beaks Of Eagles.

It's an absolutely stupendous song but nevertheless my least favourite on the album (an album, by the way, which is one of the most under-rated OF ALL TIME!). I think Blondie and Ricky were great and added enormously to the BB's music and credibility in the early '70's, and I think Leaving This Town is a great song, but it still gets my vote. To me, that's more of a sign of Holland's brilliance than a sign of any weakness in Leaving This Town. Title: Re: Beach Boys Survivor #23: Holland Post by: bluesno1fann on March 07, 2014, 11:46:27 AM Steamboat. "yawn"
This song highlights Holland's biggest flaw. All the songs (with just one exception) sounds like it goes on for way too long. And this one is the worst example, mainly because it's also boring to the extreme and is hard to listen to without getting tired. IMHO one of Denny's very worst songs. Only With You is far superior! Steamboat is the worst in this cars for reasons I already stated I disagree with every word of the above. I think the length of songs on Holland is absolutely spot-on and only the moog solo in Leaving This Town could be said to go on 'too long' (although I personally don't think it does). There are however lots of songs on CATP which - whilst they might not actually be longer - certainly feel longer than anything on Holland, simply by having middle sections that seem to drag on from one uninspired section to the next. Here She Comes and, especially, He Come Down are both very guilty of this. Trader may be longer than either of them, but it's structured to perfection (there's not a wasted second) whereas too many CATP songs just ramble. (Bizarrely one of the few CATP songs that absolutely could not be accused of this - the shockingly brisk Make It Good, which seems to stop just as it's getting started - is one of the songs you single out as being too lengthy!) Trader may be longer than either of them, but it's structured to perfection (there's not a wasted second) whereas too many CATP songs just ramble. (Bizarrely one of the few CATP songs that absolutely could not be accused of this - the shockingly brisk Make It Good, which seems to stop just as it's getting started - is one of the songs you single out as being too lengthy!) I say it's all subjective. Some people may find it to feel too short, some may find it to feel too long, others may find it just right :) Title: Re: Beach Boys Survivor #23: Holland Post by: Quzi on March 08, 2014, 02:37:23 AM Leaving this Town. Re: Steamboat vs. Only with You, I find the former is a truly unique and interesting Denny composition that manages to satisfy me in a different way than most of Denny's songs. Only with You, while pretty, is a tad nondescript and the type of song Denny could write in his sleep. Just so you know, I think it was Mike Love who wrote the lyrics for Only With You I don't like Steamboat for its lyrics, but for the atmosphere it creates. Title: Re: Beach Boys Survivor #23: Holland Post by: Freddie French-Pounce on March 08, 2014, 06:45:46 AM I'm probably one of the few who prefer CATP to this.
Title: Re: Beach Boys Survivor #23: Holland Post by: feelsflow on March 08, 2014, 09:08:52 AM I'm one of those few Freddie. Carl and The Passions-"So Tough" is very much better than Holland.
. That being said, Holland has some wonderful tracks. "Steamboat" (like "River Song") is unique, and I hope it makes it to the finals. "Trader" was more like two songs, and certainly not too long. It was always a special part of live shows when Carl would set his guitar down to play piano. "Only With You" Is a common Dennis type song. He wrote a lot of love songs, and very well. I love both versions. I heard it by Carl first, so partial to the Holland version. I posted my preference for the live "Leaving This Town" because I listen to it more often that way. I'll give it a listen tonight. One of the great things about participating in the Survivor Rounds, is that it gets me to listen to some of the albums, like Holland, I don't play too often all the way through instead of my comps and box sets. . One more thing before I vote. Pixletwin, Thank You again for taking the time to do this. This is much more than just a poll (and it's fun). I hope when we get done with the albums, you'll consider doing the Box Sets. At least GV and MiC. . To me, that's more of a sign of Holland's brilliance than a sign of any weakness in Leaving This Town. Title: Re: Beach Boys Survivor #23: Holland Post by: bluesno1fann on March 08, 2014, 01:45:12 PM Count me as one that prefers CATP over Holland, Freddie and Feels Flow!
I'm pretty sure it's an unpopular opinion, but I stand by it. For one, I prefer Mess Of Help over anything off Holland. I just find myself listening and preferring CATP more than Holland. Both great albums though! Title: Re: Beach Boys Survivor #23: Holland Post by: pixletwin on March 10, 2014, 11:08:12 AM Welcome back to a new round of BEACH BOYS SURVIVOR. All the way through. "Leaving This Town" (album version) Is Great. I saw them do it live a couple of times back in the 70's, and think that's why I give the live version the edge. "Big Sur" was much better than I remembered. I usually listen to the Landlocked version, but both are good. Mike does Folk-Country. I bet Neil Young likes this. "Beaks" though was as I remembered, weak. Though Al's part is great. They should have left the poem out. Brian's fairytale has beautiful music. One comment was, "The prince sounds like he's on acid" ;)(ha, ha -no, I don't remember that at all), again it's not one I listen to that much. I don't listen to Holland much. Most of the best songs are on boxes or comps. I like the Better Get Back in Bed bit. When the album came out I listened to this 45 often. The GV box did it right. That's the way I like to listen to "Mt. Vernon and Fairway." As an instrumental. The music is So Good though, I can't bring myself to vote it off yet.
. My vote (again), has to go to: "California Saga: Big Sur" Title: Re: Beach Boys Survivor #23: Holland Post by: Phoenix on March 11, 2014, 01:40:42 PM Mount Vernon and Fairway (A Fairy Tale)

Title: Re: Beach Boys Survivor #23: Holland Post by: Moon Dawg on March 13, 2014, 06:02:14 PM I'm not trying to judge anyone for not liking Funky Pretty, or wanting it off this early, but Blondie's vocal, especially in the last minute, is so amazing. It just knocks me out. His vocal is among the most awe inspiring moments in maybe not just the post Smile stuff, but in the whole BB's catalog. I could go on about the song, but words don't really do greatness justice. "Funky Pretty" is the worst damn song on the album. Think of Holland with a closing track as good as the opener. "Funky Pretty" isn't it. The live version is better, for sure. Title: Re: Beach Boys Survivor #23: Holland Post by: ThyRavenAscend on March 13, 2014, 06:38:18 PM Funkie Purdy

Funky pretty Title: Re: Beach Boys Survivor #23: Holland Post by: Disney Boy (1985) on March 14, 2014, 12:09:10 AM I'm not trying to judge anyone for not liking Funky Pretty, or wanting it off this early, but Blondie's vocal, especially in the last minute, is so amazing. Sail on Sailor is the sort of sing-along pub-rock song that sounds like it could've been recorded by any 1970's rock band.
Steamboat ran out of steam... Far too early imo. (http://www.sideshowcollectors.com/forums/images/smilies/survivor.gif) As usual vote for your least favorite track. Title: Re: Beach Boys Survivor #23 Final Round: Holland Post by: Please delete my account on March 19, 2014, 05:14:38 PM By far my favourite song on this album is Funky Pretty (glad it almost made the finals despite the disdain thrown its way almost from the start. Should have won though.). My next two favourites are Sail On Sailor and Trader. I just listened to them both and can't decide between them. So I won't. It won't break my heart if one of the other two wins, tho. :) Title: Post by: zachrwolfe on March 19, 2014, 09:01:47 PM

Title: Re: Beach Boys Survivor #23 Final Round: Holland Post by: The Shift on March 21, 2014, 10:34:04 AM Of these three I have to go with Trader.
But my two desert island tracks form this album have to be Funky Pretty & Only WIth You, plus maybe Steamboat as third. By tomorrow though I'll have changed my mind. Title: Re: Beach Boys Survivor #23: Holland Post by: pixletwin on March 21, 2014, 12:07:37 PM This final round was a surprise. While my favorite remaining track won, I was sure a different track was going to win.
2 smilers are on their way to sunny Californ-I-A! I think the order was pretty on point, except I'd place steamboat and beaks of eagles higher.
Title: Re: Beach Boys Survivor #23 Winner: The Trader Post by: stack-o-tracks on March 21, 2014, 07:39:12 PM Steamboat def should have been higher but at least the best song got the number 1 spot. Those harmonies in the second verse are fuggin' DIVINE.

I think the order was pretty on point, except I'd place steamboat and beaks of eagles higher. As someone who's relatively new to this album, I think Steamboat is an amazing track -- very likely my favorite from this album. Such a unique, dreamy sound and then that stinging guitar at the end -- plus those cryptic, very atypical lyrics that keep me returning to it over and over.I'm curious about all the love for Trader. Like another poster said earlier, there are things I like about it, but on this great album it wasn't an obvious standout for me. I'd love for someone to explain what grabs them about that song. Steamboat is an incredible song - as Jon Stebbins says in his book, it's Dennis carrying on what Brian started with SMiLE - however, I do think The Trader is the best track on the album. It's less accomplished than any of the Smile era songs. Nice enough, but it doesn't have amazing hooks like Vegatables or the spine tingling melody of Wind Chimes, for example. It's also clearly an early 70s song. The Trader is one I don't get it. Maybe people are just rooting for Carl here. It's a dull one. Steamboat is an incredible song - as Jon Stebbins says in his book, it's Dennis carrying on what Brian started with SMiLE - however, I do think The Trader is the best track on the album. |
