Title: found this 'lost' backing track from Goldstar... Post by: bringahorseinhere? on February 11, 2014, 06:48:54 PM Sounds so very Brian!!! or Spector..... either way...
what do you guys think? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lf53KTNwCHA RickB Title: Re: found this 'lost' backing track from Goldstar... Post by: The Dumb Angel on February 11, 2014, 07:01:56 PM Wow! Brilliant backing track! However, I don't think it's Brian; definitely Phil in my opinion.
Edit: I listened to it again and noticed the guy counting off at the beginning sounds a heck of a lot like Phi. Title: Re: found this 'lost' backing track from Goldstar... Post by: alf wiedersehen on February 11, 2014, 07:06:01 PM There are a few touches in there that make me definitely doubt any Brian involvement.
Really great backing track, though. Title: Re: found this 'lost' backing track from Goldstar... Post by: Mayoman on February 11, 2014, 07:07:28 PM Yeah, don't think it's Brian, but it is pretty great.
Title: Re: found this 'lost' backing track from Goldstar... Post by: bringahorseinhere? on February 11, 2014, 07:57:46 PM it sounds a little too 'busy' for Brian's kind of work.... but then it kinda reminds me of his 'why do fools fall in love' era....
it is a great track thou.... maybe Carol Kaye might know..... :lol RickB Title: Re: found this 'lost' backing track from Goldstar... Post by: Quzi on February 11, 2014, 08:12:15 PM Kinda sounds like Salt Lake City meets He's a Doll - highly doubt it's Brian however.
Title: Re: found this 'lost' backing track from Goldstar... Post by: Shane on February 11, 2014, 09:26:46 PM It's really nice, whatever it is.
The writeup on the youtube clip says the voice on the countoff is Herb Alpert. What do you guys think... Spector or Alpert? Title: Re: found this 'lost' backing track from Goldstar... another great backing of the 'righteous brothers' ... 'you've lost that lovin feelin'... damn you can just hear what Brian was hearing in his head with this stuff..... if you didnt' know you would think it was a Pet Sounds outtake..... Post by: Custom Machine on February 11, 2014, 11:23:18 PM Mark Linett just posted the answer on YouTube, presumably after reading this thread. Mark says, "This is an unreleased track titled 'I Love My Chico' by Bonnie and the Treasures from the same session that produced 'Close Your Eyes'. Vocals were recorded but the song remains unreleased."
Title: Re: found this 'lost' backing track from Goldstar... Post by: feelsflow on February 12, 2014, 05:31:33 AM Hey, Thanks Rick! Just spent some time and subscribed to Anthony's channel. He's got some really Great (and Rare) stuff to share. I focused on his David Gates sides - neat! Also played one of the Righteous Bros. backing tracks. Had to go back and check, yeah the one you found... Check out Suzy Wallis. And give "The Girl I Lost In The Rain" - C. J. Russell (Leon), written, arranged and produced by Gates a spin. Released July 1963.
. The "I Love My Chico" track doesn't sound so much like Brian, as just Gold Star magic. I hope some of the experts will tell us more on who did the session. I don't know who Bonnie and the Treasures were. I'll have to look to find something with a vocal. Title: Re: found this 'lost' backing track from Goldstar... It's definitely too busy for BW but I love the chorus (are those vibes/xylophone?) and break down. And Hal's drumming-phew!! Title: Re: found this 'lost' backing track from Goldstar... Riopelle was a Spector protégé, and staff producer for Philles Records. For example the "Things are Changing" EEOC track was produced by Riopelle, and not Spector. Lee Title: Re: found this 'lost' backing track from Goldstar... Post by: feelsflow on February 12, 2014, 10:59:47 AM I checked Bonnie out, but not too many clips to play. She's good though. There is no shortage of "new" tracks to discover from the 1960's, everybody seemed to be inspired. This backing track is good even without vocals.

Lee Yeah, of all the guys from Spector's inner circle who emulated the wall of sound (Sonny Bono, Nino Tempo, Jack Nitszche, Brian, Marshall Lieb, Bill Medley, Anders & Poncia etc.) I think Riopelle came closest with some of his stuff. For those who haven't heard it, check out 'Home of the Brave' with the same Bonnie (Charlotte O'Hara) on lead vocals. This was released on Philles and has often been mistaken as a Spector production. But it's Riopelle working his magic in Gold Star. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q3ASw3RNjW8 Allegedly, Spector took on Riopelle as his protegé when he heard this production by him for Clydie King: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rtIvY-q_opo Anthony's youtube channel is epic! :) In an ideal world, he'd sit down and write a book on the whole 60s LA / Gold Star scene and all the obscure gems that is to be found from that era when you scratch the surface... Title: Re: found this 'lost' backing track from Goldstar... Post by: guitarfool2002 on February 13, 2014, 06:02:29 AM To be honest, some of these lost songs are better off lost because apart from the obvious "Wall Of Sound" appeal of the backing tracks and who was involved in the productions, the singers-lyrics-performances were sub-par if not amateur and many of the songs were just not very good. Which is probably why they've remained "lost" for 50 years. :)
Not that some aren't enjoyable, but remove the Wall Of Sound association and the songs themselves often don't hold up. |
