Title: Beach Boys Survivor #22 WINNER!: ALL THIS IS THAT
Post by: pixletwin on February 11, 2014, 12:48:13 PM
Quote
Carl and the Passions – "So Tough" is the eighteenth studio album by American rock band The Beach Boys, released on May 15, 1972. Initial pressings of the album included Pet Sounds as a bonus record. The album is frequently considered a transitional album for the band, with the addition of Blondie Chaplin and Ricky Fataar on guitar and drums, respectively, and long-time member Bruce Johnston departing during its initial sessions.
It's been speculated that Carl and the Passions – "So Tough" was either scheduled to be released, or re-released, as a single album. A Warner/Reprise catalogue number, MS 2090, had been assigned to this single disc release, but nothing came of it. The album was released as a standalone album in Europe on Reprise Records.
The title of the album was a reference to an early band Carl Wilson had been in as a teenager. It was also the first album released under a new deal with Warner Bros. that allowed the company to distribute all future Beach Boys product in foreign as well as domestic markets.

Welcome back to the a new round of BEACH BOYS SURVIVOR. Remember to be respectful of others opinions. Please don't spam the thread with too much opinionating (a little is ok  ;D).... and without further ado...

He Come Down.

Can't stand Gospel, and Can't stand BB's doing Gospel.
Only song I really skip off this album.

Though I wouldn't be surprised it Make It Good goes first, I'd be happy if it goes after He Come Down!

"Hold On, Dear Brother," no contest.

In spite of the embarrassing lyrics, "He Come Down" might be my favorite song on this album.  Great rhythm, lead vocal and harmonies.

This is going to be a toughie though… some of my favourite BBs tracks reside on this album. If you asked for favourites first instead of least favourites though, it'd be a doddle!

Can't agree with ya there--not my fave album and I'm in a rush to get rid of several tracks here. Compared to Sunflower this album is the polar opposite for me--the first track that needs to go is

He Come Down

Fascinating to see the responses so far. I absolutely love He Come Down. I guess it comes from liking a lot of soul and gospel music before getting hooked on the BBs. Incredible vocal performance by the guys!

I'll vote for Make It Good -- nothing particularly against it but it's one of the less distinctive tracks. I have trouble even remembering what it sounds like.

He Come Down

I don't care for TM, forgivable when a song is as good as All I Wanna Do, less so when a song is as weak as this.

There's good bits (and bad bits!) but it just really goes on far too long and the middle meanders all over the place. And the production is poor.

(Incidentally, I really hope Cuddle Up wins, a) because it's the finest track on the album, and b) to make up for poor Denny getting robbed in the Odds & Ends 3 round. Fingers crossed).

Yawn! It goes nowhere.

It's also a shame that the album's best track ("Here She Comes") is gonna get voted off early because it wasn't written by a founding member.  ::)

Yeah right, that is most likely the song that will win.  There are no weak tracks, this Round Should be called Just "So Tough" instead of #22.
.
Let's get it started with "Hold On, Dear Brother."

I agree, Here She Comes is an excellent song.
In fact I really like all the songs off this underrated album, except He Come Down of course.

My 3rd favourite Beach Boys album, but MAKE IT GOOD was always problematic - I can't understand a single word in the song!

The music off Make It Good is excellent, just brilliant. Can't say the same about the lyrics. Really just Dennis saying I Love You over and over again.
It's definitely one of Dennis's weaker songs and one of this album's weaker songs, but it's still not as bad as He Come Down. But Music is subjective, so...

One of the worst songs I've ever heard, musically and lyrically. It's either ridiculously lazy, or a failed experiment. It just doesn't sound like a finished composition.

I must be in a minority...but I really enjoy Blondie's vocals on 'Brother', and the song does touch upon a subject that is deeply routed in the DNA of The Beach Boys' very existence, so was a little disappointed to see it go already!!

My thoughts exactly. I find the song moving and the title line quite poignant when sung (beautifully) by the Beach Boys in particular. Would never guess it was peoples' least favorite, but hey, shows you what I know!

Hold On Dear Brother is a lovely song - far better than Blondie and Ricky's other CATP song. Very surprised to see it go first. I was expecting Make It Good (which I adore but which a lot of people don't seem to get) or He Come Down.

Anyway, my vote goes to He Come Down.

It's not a pop song. It's not intended to be a pop song.

I don't think Devin gets it

I don't have to ignore the lyrics - I love all of it.

Yup he pretty much hates everything that Dennis ever did so,  that's his loss  :lol

I love Make It Good. It's Big and Grand without being pretentious. It's unresolved. It's lush, yet raw.

It's not a pop song. It's not intended to be a pop song.

Not everything. He likes Forever, Little Bird (I think), Never Learn Not To Love, and Slip On Through.
But he hates most of Dennis's music...

I like it in the same way that I like some of the half-finished songs on Bambu (like "Are You Real" and "I Love You"); what's there is good, but it doesn't feel complete.  The way it is on Carl and the Passions: So Tough it almost feels like a sneak preview of "Cuddle Up."

The song is like... nothing. Just some sustained chords and strained singing. It's not even as good as Be Still.

Surely you can admit that at least Make It Good is beautiful musically. The singing may not be his best, but it's nowhere near his worst

It's more cheesy than "beautiful." Like I said, there is no direction to the composition so it doesn't "go anywhere."

I just don't feel anything from the track.

"He Come Down."

"Here She Comes" ain't a very 'Beach Boys-y' track, but I think it's a nice slice of 70s rock.
(Probably be voting for it next, though.)

Ok, without wanting to go off on some tangent, to all those voting for and complaining about Dennis' CATP songs:

Make It Good isn't supposed to be a conventional song, it's supposed to be something different and unique, a mood piece. So feel free not to like it, but please no more 'it's not even a proper song'.

Cuddle Up is supposed to be big and epic, you're supposed to lose yourself in it. Again, it's Dennis doing something unique. Shouldn't that be something to be embraced? Marcella may be great, but it's Brian on auto-pilot - Dennis was striving for something different.

Make It Good.
Cuddle Up was by far the better of Dennis's orchestra songs. Make It Good just sounds like the idea for a song that isn't really executed well. Too messy.

Shame Hold on Dear Brother and Here She Comes got voted out so quickly, I love those songs.

So Tough has its moments but I would hardly consider it integral as a BBs album and wouldnt recommend it til a good 16 albums before it: pet sounds, all summer long, today, sunflower, wild honey, surfin usa, surfer girl, lil deuce coupe, summer days, smiley smile, shut down vol2, 20/20, surfs up, love you, friends... every/anybuddy concur?

I think the thing with Carl and the Passions is that it just feels more like an EP than an album. It has just eight songs, the Chaplin/Fataar ones really don't sound like Beach Boys songs at all and Dennis's songs probably sound more like Dennis Wilson solo tracks than any other song he ever recorded with the Beach Boys. So that's just enough "real" Beach Boys songs to fill an EP (and not even a very good one, although I love All This is That).

Everybody that says the Flame tracks don't sound like the Beach Boys are maybe forgetting that a big part of the reason Carl brought them into the band in the first place was because he wanted to alter the group's sound.

Maybe, but do you think it worked? I think those songs sound like very little more than The Beach Boys (barely audibly) guesting on someone else's songs.

I think the songs themselves are great but having Mike and Al on backing vocals would have helped tie them to the Beach Boys 'feel' while still being something completely different. Leaving this Town and We Got Love got the balance right.

I've always loved CATP. I consider it to be their second-most underrated album! But yeah, 8 songs isn't enough, there should have been a few more songs, maybe one more Chaplin/Fataar song, 1 more Denny song, 1 more Carl song, and 1 more Brian song.
But to me it doesn't matter if the Chaplin/Fataar songs don't sound like BB's songs, to me that's irrelevant. What matters is if a song is great or not and both of their songs are great, especially Here She Comes. So it's disappointing that they were both voted off so quickly. In fact, the only song off CATP that isn't good IMHO is He Come Down.

Also, IMO CATP is a better album than Surfin' USA, Shut Down Vol. 2, All Summer Long, Summer Days and Summer Nights (dodges bricks), Smiley Smile (dodging flaming bricks), and especially Little Deuce Coupe!

To user 'little bird..' you mean So Tough was like a EP cuz it has 3 beach boys songs w brians inclusion? Cuz length wise its not an EP cuz the songs are pretty long; if the songs were normal length yeah but 8 songs can be a full-length if theyre long enough.

Here we are at the start of the final round of Beach Boys Survivor Round#22!!!!!

Dennis couldn't ruslte up enough people to cuddle with.  :'( (http://www.sideshowcollectors.com/forums/images/smilies/survivor.gif)

As per the usual, now we looking for which track of those remaining is your FAVORITE track.

VOTE FOR YOUR FAVORITE TRACK!!!

Tally on February 25th!!!

All This Is That

Round#1 - Hold On Dear Brother February 13
Round#2 - He Come Down February 17
Round#3 - Here She Comes February 19
Round#4 - Make It Good February 21
Round#5 - Cuddle Up February 23

My favorite track is... this is a tough one...  It's a toss up between Mess of Help (I love the groove) and All This Is That...

I will go with All This Is That because Carl's vocals on Jai Guru Dev at the end are among the most ethereal vocals ever recorded.

All This Is That is all-right, but it hasn't quite grown on me. Same with Marcella.

Going to have to go with You Need A Mess Of Help To Stand Alone. It is after all my favourite song of the entire Chaplin/Fataar era and one of my favourite overall BB's songs. You gotta love Carl and Blondie's vocals!

I expect All This Is That to win, but I hope Mess of Help will win!

My favorite track is... this is a tough one...  It's a toss up between Mess of Help (I love the groove) and All This Is That...

I will go with All This Is That because Carl's vocals on Jai Guru Dev at the end are among the most ethereal vocals ever recorded.

+1.  So, ATIT.  For now, anyway...

Since the last time I logged-on to the forum: I quit my job, moved my wife & I from the Midwest to the East Coast, and started seminary. The one constant?  The Beach Boys.  :)  And the reason why I logged on now and decided to post again was because I saw that my favorite track off of this album was in danger, so my vote is....

...ALL THIS IS THAT.  If I had to choose between just this track or the rest of the album, I would hands-down go with this track--so good!

All this is that.....I've been an ardent fan of the Beach Boys since 1991, and from 91 to about 2008 or 2009, God Only Knows was my favorite beach boys song. But in 2008/9, a shift occurred, and All This is that because my favorite.

WELCOME TO THE END OF ROUND#22 OF BEACH BOYS SURVIVOR!!!!!!

This track had A Mess of 15 Smilers to Help it Stand Alone... but not enough in the end.  :'( (http://www.sideshowcollectors.com/forums/images/smilies/survivor.gif)

18 Smilers flipped with one arm over their shoulders for Marcella. (http://www.sideshowcollectors.com/forums/images/smilies/survivor.gif)

But there can be only one and this round's winner of round#22 of BEACH BOYS SURVIVOR (with 23 votes) IS....

All This Is That

Round#1 - Hold On Dear Brother February 13
Round#2 - He Come Down February 17
Round#3 - Here She Comes February 19
Round#4 - Make It Good February 21
Round#5 - Cuddle Up February 23
Round#6 - You Need a Mess of Help to Stand Alone February 25
Round#6 - Marcella February 25

Thanks for playing folks. Round#23 will begin when rounds 20 and 21 are completed.

Totally agree. IMO things went highly predictably here.

First the different songs went (Hold On Dear Brother, He Come Down, Here She Comes)

Then the Denny songs (Make It Good, Cuddle Up)

Then the Rockers (You Need A Mess Of Help To Stand Alone, Marcella)

And finally the only song off the album that really sounds like a BB's song won (All This Is That).

I like All This Is That, but it hardly deserved to win this round IMHO. Here's how I would have ranked the tracks:

8. He Come Down.
7. Hold On Dear Brother.
6. Marcella.
5. Make It Good.
4. Here She Comes.
3. All This Is That.
2. Cuddle Up.
1. You Need A Mess Of Help To Stand Alone.

ATIT sounds no more like the BBs than the rest of the tracks. The whole album is pretty uncharacteristic. To my mind the right track won but then I wouldn't have voted any o' them off! :)

Carl and the Passions-so tough is NOT  a BBs record even worth recommending , I dont see how it gets a whole thread devoted to it. Mess of help and marcella is decent tunes but its prevalent that warner/reprise was pestering them for product like capitol was doing in 63-4. After sunflower it was obvious that their signature sound was transforming and being that mainstream rock had taken a swandive around 68 it was aparent that quality music was no longer mainstream.

Carl and the passions was an alias album for the BBs- not an essential album and really not integral

If any album post-Love You gets a survivor round, which they did, I'll fight to no end to uphold Carl and the Passions' place.  For me the album's biggest flaw (moreso than its lack of cohesiveness) is how the vocals on certain tracks are a little low in the mix.  It's most apparent to me on Here She Comes, but the falsetto ending on All This Is That also stands out as a moment that would have been that much sweeter if it hadn't been softened so quickly.  Maybe it's just the version I have, but I've heard others say the same.  Regarding the music itself, I have little complaints.
