Hhhhm, the article says the show date was Dec. 28, 1964, at Freedom Hall in Louisville, KY. AGD and Ian have the date as Dec. 30, 1964 at the fairgrounds in Louisville...

All the shots seem to have Glen on guitar, rather than bass.  The ones of Alan (and Carl) show both of them on guitar as well.  I know there are shots out there with Glen on bass.  did he and Alan alternate on different songs?

Page 78 of Badman's book shows Al playing bass with Glen on guitar so it seems that the two alternated between the two instruments for different songs. The question remains: on which songs would Al have played bass and Glen guitar and vice-versa?

Plot Twist: Glen played a 6-String Bass!  :o :o :o

I doubt it, although he may have busted out another type of 6-stringed instrument during his solo spotlight of "Foggy Mountain Breakdown." ;D

Interestingly, Carl, Al, and Brian played more 6-string bass on documented Beach Boys recording sessions than Glen http://www.tiptopwebsite.com/custommusic2/craigslowinskicom.pdf#page=1 (http://www.tiptopwebsite.com/custommusic2/craigslowinskicom.pdf#page=1)

Of course, this quota may change once Craig has released his MiC sessionography  ;D

I doubt it too. I was just joking BTW

Just to clarify - Freedom Hall is the arena at The Kentucky State Fairgrounds.  Can't clarify the date confusion.

It is an obscure bit of history that Mike Love occasionally went totally mad onstage, screaming at his audience:

Whadaya Mean We Want Brian? ? ?  Whasa mata with me???  Shut up Glen, JUST SHUT UP!! Brian AINT here! He AINT HERE so TOUGH sh*t!!!

There's a time and a place for everything.

The Mike captions don't belong here. They belong in the Weirdest Photos of Mike Love thread.

That's where I put mine lol

Actually, for years caption contests have been started in any thread that has an amusing picture in it. I highly doubt we're jeopardizing the original point of this thread by posting a few laughs.

The late Bill Strode, who took the photos, was a Pulitzer Prize winner in 1976 and some of these shots are among his best - such as the one of Dennis escaping fans. I like the one of the Lovester handling a candy machine like he's trying to shake some change loose.

It was nearly another decade before the guys played Louisville again, in May '74 at a harness-racing track, Louisville Downs, with Earl Scruggs opening.

The month before this gig, the Rolling Stones made their Louisville debut, playing two shows at the 1700 seat Memorial Auditorium (which was reportedly less than half full both times). The lineup had Ian Stewart but was minus Brian Jones who had the flu.  They didn't play the town again until 1975.

Just to clarify this matter-I have ads for the show and even the contract Carl signed on behalf of the group to appear-the date in our book of Dec 30 is correct.  Newspaper was careless-happens all the time.  I also have the ads for where the BBs were on Dec 28 1964-Des Moines.

Realistically in 64 how many people would have really know it was glen and not Brian. Both relatively tall and the stage was some what dark.  First post long time reader just got an account.
Thanks
Lad

Based on articles I have the bbs always informed the audience though in 1965 they were fairly disingenuous. Instead of saying Brian didn't plan to tour anymore they'd just say he was ill and would be there next time
