Title: Favorite Albums (Right Now, Not "All-Time")
Post by: Bean Bag on January 30, 2014, 10:23:21 PM
In the spirit of the "Favorite Movie, of right now" thread -- thought I'd create one for album.

Mine is 461 Ocean Boulevard  This Album is just all I can handle right now.

Probably The Madcap Laughs by Syd Barrett

Also, I think this thread belongs to the General Music Discussion, not the Sandbox

The Kinks - The Village Green Preservation Society. It's been my favorite for the past year.

Right now, my favorite album is a stack of 45 rpm records.  I recently acquired a 1960 Airline (Montgomery Ward) multichannel record player with a perfectly operating 45 spindle and a box of classic 45 rpm records to add to my existing collection.  The old records are designed to be played on just this sort of player.  It sounds like a juke box and the sound is something not to be found on modern digital rerecordings or even on LP's played on modern equipment.

For those too young to recall, these little 7 inch records with a big hole in the middle, had one song on each side.   Very often, the "B" or second side, oposite the hit record, was  found only on the 45 and nowhere else.   You put on a stack of ten or so records and hit a switch, the first record drops to the turntable and plays.  At the end, the tonearm catches the run-off groove and moves rapidly toward the center of the record, activating the drop mechaniism and the next record drops and plays, and so on.  A delight to watch.
When the records have all played, one simply pulls the records up over the spindle, and plays the "flip" side of the same records.  Some of these records are seemingly indestructable.  For example, a copy of Jail House Rock on RCA, looking like it did double duty as a frisbee, plays amazingly well.  And of course, a stack of 45's was actually the forerunner of the modern "playlist".

Just discovering Nilsson, I am.  Playing 'Harry', today's purchase.  This is fabulous.  Feels like a favourite album on this first listen.

Been digging George Clinton's 1993 album, Hey, Man, Smell My Finger a LOT lately. A little bit of everything on here. Doo-wop, rock, funk, soul, hip-hop...an eclectic mix from a guy whose work is known for it.

I've been listening to Here, My Dear a lot the last few days.  I don't listen to it as much as some of the other Marvin Gaye albums I own usually, partly because it's so powerful and personal that it can be a bit overwhelming.  It's a terrific album, though.

One of my all-time favorite albums.  MoFi's recent SACD is superb.

Right now it's Revolver US.

It's alright for a debut, but if I had to pick a really good CC album it would most definitely be Colour By Numbers. It's much more polished and varied.

I think the two complement each other very well. These days I begin and end each day with a track or two from one or the other. Love 'em both.

Speaking of Culture Club: Has anyone else noticed that the first three notes of "Karma Chameleon" and the BB's "You're So Good To Me" are identical in just about every respect?

This is the tracking order of KtbC that I'm familiar with. Maybe yours is the other one, which ends with "DYRWTHM" and omits the wondrous "T(COTH)". I should imagine that is less satisfying.

"Do You Really Want to Hurt Me" – 4:22
"I'm Afraid of Me" [Remix] – 3:16
"You Know I'm Not Crazy" – 3:36
"I'll Tumble 4 Ya" – 2:36
"Love Twist" [Featuring Captain Crucial] – 4:23
"Time (Clock of the Heart)" – 3:41
"White Boy" [Dance Mix] – 4:40
"Boy Boy (I'm the Boy)" – 3:50
"White Boys Can't Control It" – 3:43
"Take Control" – 3:09
