BRIAN WILSON LEADS LINEUP AT BEATLES EVENT
1/27/2014

(Gibson) It has been nearly forty years since the Beatles conquered America, yet their popularity -- and their mystique -- remain unrivaled in popular culture. Beatlemania was in full-force last Wednesday evening at Gibson Brand's Beverly Hills Showroom as stars of the stage and screen, as well as music industry swells and a flock of media, came to view never-before-seen photos of the Fab Four.

Attendees were also treated to an eclectic mix of musical icons performing Beatles classics. Brian Wilson kicked the music off by performing snippets from both the Beatles and Beach Boys catalog.

He was followed by the band America, Micky Dolenz of the Monkees, and what was easily one of the evening's finest, albeit surreal, moments when Kris Kristofferson on a Gibson J-45 acoustic guitar performed "Hey Jude." The crowd went ballistic.

The music world has descended on Southern California this week with both the Grammys and NAMM 2014 taking place just miles apart, and Gibson will have a huge part in all of the festivities.

Don't see any clips yet of NAMM'14 but some photos:

(Micky)

And though I don't know if she sang any Fabs tunes, here's Lisa Loeb signing guitars at the event - strange how she looks exactly like she did when I met her over 20 years ago:

Now that is unfortunate. I hate to see someone posting "facts" with absolutely no knowledge of the facts.

"It has been nearly forty years since the Beatles conquered America"

... so the Beatles went to the US in 1974?

That aside, sounds awesome - hope some clips show up.

I have informed him of his error, via email. Politely, yet firmly. How very unlike me.

A kinder, gentler AGD!  Who'd ever thought it?

Wasn't Brian supposed to be recording some studio-based tribute to The Beatles (or PM) to be featured on some compilation?

I wonder what happened to it...

I remember there being a rumor a while back that Brian recorded a version of "Dear Boy". How cool would that be?

Land's sakes, whoever's whistling is more in tune than Jeff's guitar!

Brian should have been invited to that Beatles special that's on TV next week. He could have joined one of the jams. I don't think there's enough representation of artists from the Beatles' era.

Cool but not quite as cool as Paul & Linda McCartney recording a version of "Dear Boy".  ;D

I admit I'm not much for artists covering other artists but Dennis & The Beach Boys did a very good cover of Charlie Manson's "Cease To Exist" that far surpasses Manson's original. And Nilsson's cover of "Without You" makes Badfinger's original sound like an amateur demo. Can not say the same for Mike Love's cover of "Be My Baby" though.

Something's decidedly screwy here: all this fuss about the 50th anniversary of The Beatles breaking America (two albums and five singles into their career) but - unless I really missed it all - hardly a single peep about their actual 50th anniversary.

Nuts.

The Beatles didn't become famous until 1964.  And WW2 started on December 8, 1941.  :lol

Of course. America is the only Real importance. Doesn't everyone know that by now?

Aaahhh... of course. But... still puzzled: weren't The Beatles responsible for WW2 ? After all, we all know - because we're told so often - that they're responsible for everything, because they not only did everything first but also did it best.

They were legends immediately, which I find so odd. I watch old TV reruns sometimes and it's amazing how often the Beatles or Beatle members are mentioned in dialogue.  People at the time must have gotten sick of them, especially the older generation.

When an aircraft first broke the sound barrier, I'm sure there were people going about their business in the general area of that flight test who heard a loud bang in the sky and had no idea until they found out later it was something called a "sonic boom". In other words, things were happening that were so new and different that there was no perspective to either report or judge what was going on, or what they had just witnessed, until after the event itself.

And I agree, the 1964 thing is a product of media hype and marketing. The real groundbreaking and even game-changing events as far as the record business was concerned happened in the UK throughout 1963, when the Beatles truly were breaking all previous records for advance orders and sales, and reshaping the music industry in the process. Nothing like that had been seen before, even the notion of one region having such a vibrant community and scene of local bands and musicians, and fans who followed them as others may follow sports teams.

It can't be rewritten just how much that affected the music biz at the time. And the US record business was all but ignorant or simply didn't pay attention to it until the last minute.

Letterman, who uses the same stage as Sullivan, is having a Beatles music week. I was thinking wouldn't it have had a nice  ironic moment if on the night the C50 line-up had played a Beatles song.
