Title: Message Boards/ Music Forums
Post by: Jim Rockford on January 02, 2014, 07:34:00 PM
The Smiley Smile message board has to be one of the best message boards that I've come across. Not only is it very informative, but the members are very nice also. I am very happy to be a memeber of this message board and I hope that I will learn more and more about The Beach Boys :)

  Whatever happened to OSD?

OldSurferDude accidently got underneath the ban hammer one day after he stated that there's too many Myke Luv fans on the board.

OSD's Hate for Love was a bit over the top I must say, but it would be fine to have him back.

AGD is of course one of the best sources of all things to do with The Beach Boys we could hope to have as a contributor on this board.

I agree with that assessment.  We need more old farts here to balance out the amount of youngsters contributing to the board.  You know, guys who actually lived through the heyday of the Beach Boys' career, went to their concerts when the Wilsons were still on stage, bought the records when they came out, watched 'em on TV specials, and stalked them to meet them in person.  OSD is/was one of these true fans.

If I recall, it was The Real Beach Boy who banned him (who's friends with Smile Brian, according to my observations, - you know, the biggest supporter of Old Surfer. Odd situation, isn't it?).

Excellent thoughts from Mikie! My New Year's resolution vis-a-vis the board is to not post on ML related threads.
As to OSD, I miss his crass,  funny shtick. The old bastard was truly a real fan.

If my recall is right - and please correct me if it isn't - OSD wasn't banned purely for his stance re: Mike, and was warned repeatedly about his online attitude. Check out post #34 here:

http://smileysmile.net/board/index.php/topic,16045.msg388283.html#msg388283 (http://smileysmile.net/board/index.php/topic,16045.msg388283.html#msg388283)

Like me, he was told the next transgression will result in a permanent ban. He did, and he was. I plan not to because despite the curmudgeonly exterior, I'm not a complete idiot and can recognise a final warning when I see it. This place can be hugely frustrating, especially when people move from the topic in question to the personal arena ( :wave guilty...), but it's far and away the best BB/related forum there is and there overall depth of knowledge is just astonishing. One final observation: simple age does not automatically confer anything, be it wisdom, respect or a simple cutting of slack. The rules are the same for all. On the internet, we're all 25 year old Adonises.

It has always struck me as sad that someone who has been a dedicated fan for over 40 years gets banned from his favorite band's forum. He took stuff too far, but he was interesting, and completely benign. No malice to found in OSD (aside from his feelings towards M&B).

The problem was for every worthwhile post OSD gave, there was another 10 of his "Myke Luv sucks"  :woot :woot :woot :woot :woot drivel. It was derailing threads. And there was no excusing his attacks on Mike's family. Anyone missing OSD that much should just check out any BB related thread on the Hoffman board where the Myke bashing continues to this day.

That comment about his wife was out of line, but as far as I know he did not say it knowing that the lady in question was his wife.
Best thing would have been for the comment to not have been made at all, but he did not say what he said to insult anyone.

As a long time BB fan, I couldn't be happier that I no longer have to put up with OSD's immature ramblings and Woot! Woot! Woots!

The great majority of OSD's posts seriously degraded the integrity of this board and the discussions contained therein.  And that's not to say that he was the only offender in that regard, but he was definitely one of the worst.

I am in total agreement with the comment by Mike's Beard! OSD's age and longevity as a fan should have nothing to do with it and that's said by a fan since the mid-60's. This board has been a nicer and better place since and with the information and discussion on various topics not getting derailed (as often) as a result.
Back to the point by the original poster; yes, this Board can be a wealth on information about the group, the individual members, the music, and all things related to the Beach Boys. And we are very lucky to have knowledgeable contributors (who actually participated, still participate, or are learned in all things BB) visit and participate from time to time. A special thanks to all of them!

Noooo, please don't! I don't care how long he's been a fan, he can't behave and ruined every thread he posted in with his insane anti-Mike obsession! I agree there's lots of reasons one could criticize Mike for, but this guy was really obsessed.

Well, I came back here this morning and I was gonna propose a possible return for OSD, but it looks like the consensus has pretty much squelched that.   :P

Regarding the observation made by AGD: "Simple age does not automatically confer anything, be it wisdom, respect or a simple cutting of slack."

Age usually goes hand in hand with maturity and experience and wisdom. Respect comes to those who earn it.

And I learned a long time ago about the cutting of slack. Have you ever heard the addage, "Give the guy an inch and he'll take a mile"?

Nothing wrong with posting on them, just don't get all beside yourself with personal vendettas against Mike Love or posters who support him and his viewpoints.

P.S. Always liked the moniker "OregonRiverRider". What happened to that? My parents use to take me up to the Klamath, Rogue, and Smith Rivers when I was a kid. Loved it!

I'm a little hazy as to why OSD was banned, but I'm sure it was for a good reason.

That being said, he wasn't that bad of a troll...not like he was starting 3 threads a day and posting about his personal sexual desires...as other long-gone posters had done.

I agree with Mikie's earlier post. It's great that there's a lot of young fans out there now (myself included), but while we still have the older fans around it would be nice to hear what they have to offer about the olden days...even if we are subjected to daily barrages of Myke Luhv remarks ;D

Also, welcome to the board addsomemusic!

No personal vendettas Mikie. Just disapprove of what Mr. Love has taken my home town band's legacy to. And, if you read back, my opinion  far predates my ugly, in person encounter with the man. As to posters, I just give back what I get. As I say, don't like my opinion, move along and ignore me. What usually happens is the opposite. Certain people tend to argue my right to express my opinion instead of making the case for their own.

Love lovers are quite emphatic about their luv. Put down ML and some get downright nasty on here. For 2014, I think their is nothing to add to my expressed opinion (unless, of course, he fires Brian again  ;D  )

For sure Pinder. Mike is a legendary songwriter, singer and frontman. And a very under-appreciated vocalist in the stack (as I listen to MIC).

Speaking of creating difficulty at one's own expense - guilty!  :rock

I don't know about legendary, but he's part of the band we all love, warts n all....

I get it though. When I worked for NBC, I had a particularly bad experience with Jon Lovitz. I can still watch SNL clips with him and laugh, but still...... So, I do understand.

I want the old dude back, his BBs stories were great when people actually engaged him and didn't call him a "troll" just for not liking Mike Love.

He wasn't called a troll "just for not liking Mike Love". He was called a troll for spewing his obsessive hatred over every thread Mike was mentioned in. I took the time to look at OSD's last page of posts on his profile page. There were no BB stories on there, just complaining about Mike and cheering at every negative comment someone else made about Mike.

I don't mind if someone doesn't like Mike. I can't say I like everything he does. I don't mind if someone says something negative about Mike. I know I have. But OSD turned that into trolling.
