This one is probably my favorite album.

I'm gonna vote for "Be Still."

Tough one because I love every song.. "TM" sticks out badly but at the same time I'm glad it's on there. I guess I'd pick "Be Still" too. Then again if Brian hadn't sung "When A Man Needs A Woman" so sweetly and beautifully, I'd pick that one right away. Cheesy song but Brian does such a nice vocal.

"Transcendental Meditation" represents, above a lot of other stuff, what I feel to be one of Brian's most endearing features as a songwriter and performer. It's not one that gets talked about often, but it's one that I would hope would be appreciated around these parts. The idea of people not getting it, just... :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'(

Believe it or not, I don't like every Dennis song.
Surfers Rule and Girls on the Beach are so bad it's almost unlistenable IMO. Denny's Drums sucks too.
Mona Kana I find overrated, same with My Love Lives On, Barnyard Blues, and 4th Of July.
Steamboat is a pretty boring song, same with Barbara. Got mixed feelings for Make It Good.
A lot of the Bambu material can be quite depressing, even more so than POB.

But I genuinely feel that Be Still is one of the best songs from Friends. I find the album to be slightly overrated, it's certainly not one of my favourites. The songs I truly like from that are the title track, Wake The World, Diamond Head, Little Bird, and Be Still.

Besides, It's About Time (pun intended) that a Dennis song should win one of the Survivor contests!

The drumming is fine. Dennis was a pretty great drummer; I always felt he was way, way underrated. In some ways I like him more than Ringo.

BUT

'Denny's Drums'....best DW composition? No way. Not when there's 'Forever', 'Slip On Through', 'Steamboat', 'Wouldn't It Be Nice (To Live Again)', 'Baby Blue', 'River Song', 'You & I', and much more. No way.

I know I'm alone in this one, but I'm not a huge fan of much on Friends.

I love most of Dennis' work, but Little Bird does nothing for me.

Much as I like Baby Blue, I think Love Surrounds Me should win instead on the Light Album contest.
And I'm certain My Diane will win the M.I.U. contest too. I also wouldn't be surprised if Forever wins the Sunflower contest even though I prefer Slip On Through and It's About Time.

Nope, I love it too! As with Make It Good (which I'm sure will also be voted off early, and which I also love), it's more of a poem than an actual song - but... so what? Dennis was doing something unique and he should be applauded for that, not voted off in the first round.

"Doing your own thing" doesn't justify laziness, which Be Still and Make It Good both are.

Be Still. Within a year or so Dennis would become a great songwriter but his stuff on Friends is rather basic.

Some of the most enjoyable Beach Boys songs are lazily-written.

That's why Smiley Smile, Wild Honey and Friends can be so enjoyable.

Lazy or no, 'Be Still' is a great song. As great as 'Little Bird'? Not at all, but it's still pleasant as hell and a perfect fit for the other songs on Friends. And anyway, it's less lazy than 'Passing By' which is also great.

I think Friends is one of their more consistent albums with no bad tracks, so a vote for Be Still shouldn't be considered a slight.  Especially since I'm a sucker for falsetto, harmonies, and cutting productions.  Be Still falls more in the low-fi category.

THE WHOLE ALBUM is lazy - and all the better for it! Just look at Brian's song titles.

And what's remotely 'lazy' about the carefully crafted Make It Good, with its orchestra and dense production?

The backing track is fantastic, it's like a darker Pet Sounds tune. But as Gabo pointed out, the lyrics are rubbish and the second verse doesn't even relate to the rest of the song. No wonder people tried to pin this mess on Charles Manson for years.

Be Still is not lazy. It's spare. It's brief. It's not lazy.

It's a benediction. An affirmation. A moment of tranquility and reflection.

The full poem by Steve Kalinich is much longer, but the way Dennis simplified it into a few lines and gave it a gospel melody and feel is utterly brilliant.

Spot on. One of Dennis's skills was whittling Stevie's poems down to the heart of their message. I find his poetry rambling and sometimes gratuitous but in Dennis's hands it became something else entirely. If Brian had done/had known to do the same thing on A World of Peace Must Come we might have had a stone cold classic instead of a curio.

Diamond Head--last 2 tracks are the weakest on Friends--T M is gone, now it is time for Diamond Head to be gone--then the hard part starts for this, my favorite BB album

Be Still. If people on this board weren't so preoccupied with exalting Dennis than it would have been the first one to go, bar the truly grating TM.

Listen to the melodies of Busy Doin' Nothin' and Passing By -- absolute heaven. Be Still doesn't have that. It just sounds like the ten minute effort of an unskilled songwriter. Boring chords, boring melody, dumb lyrics. You probably just grew to like it because of its context (the Friends album).

Make It Good is even lazier than Be Still. Instead of spending ten minutes on the song, it sounded like he just improvised everything and overdubbed strings to make it at least somewhat palatable. It didn't, and the track is truly embarrassing.

This is a great description of Make It Good, taken from the review of CATP on Beachboys.com:

"Make It Good is a pointless, rambling song, sung by Dennis as if he was fighting off the effects of chloroform, and orchestrated to little effect by Daryl Dragon."

It seems like all you do is criticize Dennis's work, and say really bad stuff about it.

Do you even genuinely like any of his songs?

What's wrong with exalting Denny? :brow  If only people can put the drugs, and booze and Manson aside and focus on the positive things he did in life like writing beautiful songs, picking up where Brian left off; and Be Still has a very positive message.  People exalt Brian's songs day and night and he would do drugs and sit at the piano smoking a cigarette instead of playing the music.

Exactly!  :h5 it's like a Jan and Marsha thing it's annoying  >:( I love Brian but how come he gets away with so much? he was a womanizer and a drug addict too, and he knew what he was getting into.  Denny didn't know that Manson was a murderer, and at least Manson seemed to take interest in Denny's stuff while his own brothers and band mates didn't.  for the first time in his life he felt accepted.

i know a lot of people are turned off by the lyrics of Man/Woman but the words to Anna Lee are pretty freakin awful.

Because "Passing By" is one of B-Dub's most beautiful post-Smile compositions, and Diamond Head is a weird nod to Martin Denny, which is awesome.  Those are my reasons, anyway!  :p

I'm surprised to see that most people around here don't care much for instrumentals. I, for one, really enjoy instrumentals. Especially the ones by the Beach Boys.
For as much as we all care about backing tracks, once you take the vocals away, they seem to lose all value.

I think instrumentals like Summer Means New Love, Let's Go Away for Awhile, and of course, Diamond Head are absolutely gorgeous. It kind of upsets me that they get voted off so soon.  :-\

I like 'Be Still' because it is a peaceful, quiet song and its feel fits so well with the musical picture of Friends. I like songs the appeal to me, melodically, emotionally and lyrically. 'Be Still' does all that. No, it's simply not as good as 'Little Bird'  and I do like every other song on Friends more than 'Be Still' except for 'Transcendental Meditation' and maybe 'Passing By' and 'When A Man Needs A Woman'.

It's not a bad song, but there's something about Mike's vocals in this song that kind of annoys me.  :shrug

One person has already tried. IMHO regardless of who's song it is, I think it's the best from this album, and I hope it doesn't get voted off.
I've noticed that the instrumentals and Bruce's songs are terribly underrated and get voted off quite quickly as well as Denny's. It's a shame, really.

If Brian had written Be Still, I would still think it would be an incredibly boring song.

Well with Bruce I have mixed feelings myself but Denny was clearly the second best songwriter.  it's like if your valedictorian got all A's and then these people would say "ok well he's still not as smart as Albert Einstein".  of course Brian's in a different league but that shouldn't take away from Denny's talents  >:(

That doesn't matter because some people on this board act like Brian is the only one in the group that matters when around this time period he was spiraling down.  even at his worst people still say his stuff is genius and don't get me wrong I love the guy but it's just like with Beatles fans.  there are genuine fans and then they're the ones that just jump on the bandwagon saying they were the best group that ever lived.  I can boldly say that I like the Beach Boys' music better than theirs.  I can boldly say that Brian isn't my favorite Beach Boy but happens to be my 3rd favorite after Denny and Carl.  of Course he's in a different league he's been composing and arranging since he was a kid and I'm not taking that away from him I love his music. he's been through a lot in his life and he's a better survivor than his brothers and I applaud him for overcoming his issues, but that doesn't make him better than the others.  There were FIVE MEMBERS of the BB not just one...and I know someone is gonna quote what Denny said about them being his messengers but he had a low self-esteem and the jealousy he was getting in the group didn't help that  >:(

You act as if there's some Dennis conspiracy.
There isn't.

People are voting in accordance with which songs they like/think are better. Dennis was, as you've mentioned earlier, only starting out as a songwriter. Naturally, his songs are going to be weaker than the ones Brian was writing.

If you look at it objectively, which you're not doing, then it would make sense that his songs are going first - they're amateur compositions. His songs aren't going to stick around just because he's a newbie and should be cut some slack. We are determining which songs are better and Dennis is coming up short when his songs are compared to the others.

Maybe Be Still, as great and beautiful it is, it is a little amateur.
Little Bird however is in no way amateur.
Besides, for being Denny's first compositions, they are already pretty damn good, and he was already showing his immense songwriting talent, which eventually surpassed Brian's in the 70's (though no one is as good as Brian at his height).
Little Bird to me is the best song off this album, period. I understand that not everyone would feel the same way, but at least no one else is trying to vote it off this early.

Image-wise, Dennis was the Beach Boys.
But other than that, Brian was the Beach Boys. I can totally understand why most people are mainly Brian fans, he was and is a genius!
Even Dennis said that Brian was the Beach Boys, the rest of the members being his messengers.

Like I've also said before, you can state your opinion without attacking the artist, I have no problem with that  :).  it's other people on this board that make statements like "if people would stop exalting Dennis..." and "Dennis is insanely overrated" that me and MessOfHelp are talking about

Yea you're right about the number  :lol and I'm not taking away from the fact that Brian's a genius cuz he is and I mentioned that I know that Dennis quote  :), but some of the comparisons stated aren't fair because Brian was in a different league than the rest of them  :(.  Denny had a lot of great songs and in his own league he was fantastic  :-D

Little Bird is a great track. Busy Doin' Nothin' is my favorite on the record though. It's seriously a prodigious attempt at bossa nova. "I had to fix a lot of things this morning because they were so scraaaaambled." ;D

Passing By is a stunning Brian Wilson composition, with some beautiful wordless vox to boot.  One of my favorite tracks from one of my favorite albums.

but Diamond Head wasn't written by a Beach Boy. and I still voted Anna Lee off first!

I guess because of all the songs left it has one of my least favorite moments. The part where Brian sings "A woman needs a man like a man needs a woman. When the two get together ah ah ha, haha ha!" Has always bugged me.  :lol

Friends is my favorite album but Friends the track is far from my favorite song on my favorite album and thus it garners my vote this round. Love the idea of a track set to a waltz but Friends just doesn't do it for me as much as the other tracks. I am glad that the sublime Passing By has survived this far--my faith in Smiley Smilers is starting to get restored

My vote is to Friends again. VERY disappointed at how this voting is taking place on this album. Perhaps a lengthy congressional hearing involving the President of the US and perhaps members of the UN is in order?

It's hard to really compare Meant for You with the other songs, as it's a fragment of a song.
But IMO it's a perfect opener. Love everything about it, including its unusual brevity.
