How She Boogalood It. Always sounded strange to me. It somehow sounds like it's building up to a really catchy hook, but it never comes and the song goes absolutely nowhere.

Was about to vote for "A Thing Or Two", one of my least favorite choruses of the pre-78 material, but dat verse is so cool. Also tempted to go after "Country Air", but I know that'd be a losing battle and I'd be stabbed to deaf wif a machete for voting for that so soon. It don't do much for me.

I don't hate Boogalooed. It's pretty fun tune actually. I love the whole Wild Honey album end to end but I had to pick something. And I do like 'Mama Says' a bit more....no way I can vote off the song that ends this marvelous album with "pooof!"

Boogalooed. A cool, cool, fun song, but still the weakest for me ('Mama Says' is still better).

Carl's "I Was Made To Love Her"  is even better than Stevie's (his is second best).  Loved Stevie since I was a kid (mentioned in my very first post), so I won't be picking that just yet.

With WH, all the choices are hard ones, so I'll go with "I'd Love Just Once to See You."

I Was Made to Love Her.  I'm in the minority here, but I don't care for Carl's vocals on I Was Made to Love Her or Wild Honey.  Dropping the key signature a step or two would have made the latter much more enjoyable to me.

Nothing on this album I don't enjoy, but I'll go with Boogalooed for this slot.   :)

I was friends with a guy a few years ago - few years older than me, drink problem, but pretty good fun most of the time. Terrible taste in music however. He liked Blue, Robbie Williams, etc. Anyway, I'd still play him the Beach Boys all the time to try and show him the error of his ways, but nothing worked.... until one day when we were sat chatting/drinking with the Smiley Smile/Wild Honey 2-fer on in the background. As I Was Made To Love Her kicked in, he stopped talking and his eyes lit up - he LOVED it!! And - no lie - he had me play it over and over and over again, so late into the night that eventually my then-neighbour from the flat downstairs came up and went nuts: "Turn that f**king song off!"

(Oh, he also later liked the intro to Friday Night and Got To Know The Woman - everything else? Nah...)

Nice story, but "to show him the error of his ways"? "Terrible taste in music"? Really? There's no need to act snobbish just because you dig The Beach Boys and he doesn't. And by the way, Robbie Williams did put out some great pop singles and he's one hell of a showman imo.

His tone suggested he was saying that tongue in cheek... At least that is how I read it.

It was tongue in cheek yes, however... I think Robbie Williams was, is, and almost certainly always will be, absolutely bloody awful!

Don't know, I think his radio hits are quite good if taken in reasonable doses and for what they are. Except the Angel-type ballads, that is. But even those are better than your average Celine Dion ballad. I probably wouldn't want to sit through an entire album of his, but when taken as a single-orientated pop star I think he's fine.

Anyway, where were we? Wild Honey? I vote for How She Boogalooed It, even though it's quite fun.

It's a really good song. But they tried to stay really close to the original and the original's better. So this is kind of a pointless cover version.

UGH I love everything here (and Mama and Boogaloo)!  Hmmm...

The verses are tremendous and Carl's singing is top-notch, however A Thing Or Two sadly gets my vote.

I really like all the tracks left, including A Thing or Two, and Carl's great vocal redeems I Was Made To Love Her in a big way for me. I'll go with Let the Wind Blow.

Why do you think it's the best song? Idly curious. I know it gets a lot of love here, I just prefer the other tracks more.

Well, 'Let The Wind Blow' is one of my favorite Beach Boys songs. Besides having a good melody and harmonies, I like the lyrics and the incredible leads by both Mike and Brian, particularly Brian's part: "let the bees make honey, let the poor find money, take away their sorrow, give 'em sunshine tomorrow....but don't take her out of my life, PLEASE keep her a part of my liiiife." Incredible.
It just ticks all the boxes for me. That said, I guess I'd be all right if 'Darlin'' or 'Aren't You Glad' won instead. But 'Let The Wind Blow' is a beautiful song with cool, cool vocals.

A Thing or Two.  I thoroughly enjoy the bouncy verses, but I don't like how it's completely at odds with the chorus.

I concur - it's probably my favorite on Wild Honey as well.

The music is very subdued, it's mostly that funky sounding piano (that funky sounding piano also has great a bassline, by the way). Then, a very understated guitar lick persists throughout the song and does a great job of accentuating the piano. Later, an organ comes in and plays long, sustained notes and adds an air of tenseness to the music.

Then, there are those gorgeous background harmonies that you don't really notice - they blend in and seem to become part of the music. Then, the actual lead comes in and is absolutely superb. The delivery is very emotional and longing and the lyrics are wonderful and heartfelt. As the singing stops, it moves into a quiet passage of just the piano and backing vocals to great effect - bringing you up and then guiding you back down.

Then, it goes to the loudest section. Here, you can feel the desperation and the pleading in his voice as he's begging to let this woman he loves continue to a part of his life.

"Let the bird sing, with the coming spring, let the church bells ring, let the rain fall, let the grass grow, let the moon glow, on the fallen snow, but don't take her out of my life."

Thanks guys... I appreciate the replies & the insightful writing. (And if I'd just gone with the flow and picked A Thing or Two, we wouldn't have gotten any of that!)   ;D
Going to give it another listen or two.   8)

And since we're in the neighborhood, I'll stick up for A Thing or Two. I think it's cool & catchy musically, and Mike and Carl sound just terrific on the verses. There's somehow a tension in the song I find appealing, almost like the cocky punk Mike narrator of the early 60s BBs songs is strutting around like he's still the one in control, but this pose is giving way to a new reality where his woman has the better of him.

AND it has the prophetic line "I have to live my doctors just to keep me alive"!

Yes, that's the right lyric.  This track should not be taken out this early.  Love the tension! :hat  But it's getting so many votes.  Brian, Carl, Mike, are all in Top Form.  Wild Honey began the "soul period."  It's the Real Thing as Marvin once said.  This IS one of my favorite Beach Boys long-players, making this round very hard...but it's all just a game to take up our time.  None of this changes my personal opinions of the songs.  Too bad "some" people aren't getting that.

I think it's an excellent cover and really fits with the feel of the album but as it's not an original my vote goes to I Was Made To Love Her.

I'd Love Just Once to See You. I really don't enjoy ultra sparse Beach Boys. Songs like this one are what killed their fanbase.

Before we get any deeper into this thread, let me give you a thumbs up for catching my mistake.  It happens.  Makes this world wide community what it is - all working together.  I've listened to this album since I was a kid, mostly on muddy mono vinyl.  I found a you-tube digital clip that someone made using "extraction" to create a stereo mix.  It makes it more clear what he's saying.  The lyrics are posted all over the net, should have double-checked first.  It doesn't make sense he would say "working nine-to-five" then use five again in the next line.  It's all too common to hear something one way, but after you read the lyrics and listen again...ah, that's what their saying.  So, good one Bubbly. 

but it does makes sense to live with doctors while working from 9 to 5?

i've heard it as "pay for five doctors" from the first listen. i certainly hear Carl's enunciation of the f on the word "five" (i've heard the stereo mix too)

and anyone who's ever searched for lyrics on the internet knows there are a LOT of mistakes out there and they tend to get repeated in nearly every online offering. it's actually quite rare to find more than one version of a song's lyrics no matter how many sites you search. try it.


getting back to the topic at hand, how hard it is to choose what to vote off and how different everyone's choices can be.
why do we prefer some songs to others? it's hard to say. Paul McCartney has described how certain songs can make him cry simply from the melody or chord progression or combination of notes/harmony. i'm sure many people would not have the same reaction as he. what makes a song great? it's almost entirely subjective

i genuinely like Country Air, A Thing or Two and ILJOTSY more than Let the Wind Blow. vive la difference

bossaroo,  Me too, but the stereo mix is more clear (listening on these computer speakers are not the ideal way to hear details though).  And I don't know what "extractions" were used, or where they got them from.  I don't buy too many sessions boots.  Let's hope for a Deluxe on All the albums.  Listening/reading Mark and Alan?  I agree about the internet having mistakes, they are everywhere.  The track is so obscure, one of our collector's of sheet music might have seen it.  A Wild Honey Music Book? - I've never seen one.  I listened to the CD two-fer (2001 version) last night.  I still need to listen to the vinyl.  I have several pressings, including a 1st that I bought when it came out.  But I know that's gonna be muddy.  This track hasn't been subjected to a lot of mixing, as it has not been on any comps, none that I have seen or have access to.  I don't want to present myself as an "expert."  I'm old and can make mistakes, the memory is a...wait, what was I saying?  More than 50% of what I read here these days is speculation and "What If?"...I will continue to research "looking for the right one."

It's a tie between Aren't You Glad and I'd Love Just Once to See You (both have 9 votes).

Good stuff, the right track won IMO. Darlin' is the track that I come back to again and again when I'm washing the dishes or doing some other every day life mundane activity. A real catchy track and the best of 20/20

Darlin' was one of a few songs that got me to checking out the Beach Boys' mid-period, and it's a deserving winner.  I'd still give Let the Wind Blow a slight edge personally, but this is a fine and expected outcome.

I felt if either 'Aren't You Glad' or 'Let The Wind Blow' or 'Darlin'' won, I'd feel good either way. So there ya go.
