Title: Johnny Rivers... recently
Post by: Ron on December 22, 2013, 08:51:54 AM
Check this out, couldn't find anything about him recently on the board here but might have missed it.  A few months ago, Johnny Rivers was on the Marty Stuart show.  Look how this dude has aged into a whole new sound.  Beautiful world we live in folks.

Basically, Marty just sits there and stares while he's playing.  To impress a guy of his calibur means something.  70 Years old.

Yea Johnny Rivers still sounds really good.. Noticed also Marty was respectful yet you could tell he didn't know him personally .. Marty seems to know most of his guests and im a big fan of Marty Stuart.. I also love the fact that Marty bought from Clarence White"s widow his old Telecaster with the B Bender on it.. Check the tunes with Roger McGuinn for that.. Marty"s show can be a might hokie and some of his guests aren't my cup of tea but he still is a fine picker on guitar + mandolin + sings great. The band is great to.. And his show is not always easy to find on cable.. He is also part of the new breed on the Grand Ol Opry..

He's pretty hokey but I can get into it.  I've rarely seen anybody on there that I didn't think was pretty damn good...

On the Johnny Rivers episode, you're right, he mentioned that he had never met him.  It kind of had this vibe, that he always thought Johnny was great and so spent the money or whatever the arrangement was, to get him on his show and that it was a big deal for him.

Marty has the greatest Country Music memorabilia collection in the world that I'm aware of.  He has better stuff than the country music hall of fame has.  For instance, he owns Hank Williams' guitar... some of Hank's suits... rhinestone suits by anybody you can think of.  If you've ever of a singer, he owns whatever iconic outfit you've ever seen them wear over the years.  He was Johnny Cash's son in law, then later his next door neighbor until he passed away.  Pretty incredible guy, it's amazing he's never really been on the radio much, but has had incredible 'underground' success.

Marty had a bunch of hits in the 90"s but he isn't the latest flavor now.. Country music has a bad habit of doing that.. Its a shame. BTW.. Theres a video of Marty at 14 playin mandolin with  I forget maybe Lester Flatt.. Or is it Earl Scruggs  im sorry I cant remember now..

I believe Lester Flatt, I think he actually toured in his band with him, that's how he got his start.  His mom let him go out on tour when he was 13 or 14, pretty crazy.
