Title: Latest issue of ESQ...
Post by: Andrew G. Doe on December 17, 2013, 03:47:49 AM
... just dropped into my mailbox. Three excellent and informative interviews with Mike, Mark & Alan (Boyd) about the box set, and a whole bunch of other great stuff, including a lovely letter from Sharon Marie (yes, that one) about going to a BW/Beck gig this fall. If you don't already subscribe, you really, really should:

http://www.esquarterly.com/ (http://www.esquarterly.com/)

And a most splendid new phrase has been added to the BB lexicon: "Alan Boyd's magic laptop".  ;D

Enjoying it now. Kudos to AGD, Lee Dempsey, David Beard, et al who manage to merge the M & B with BAD and keep both camps, and al fans of all things BB placated, educated, entertained, and all around happy. Love ESQ--if you don't subscribe, START!

. . . and Sharon Marie never heard of Jeff Beck. Ouch! She needs to get out more.  But, perhaps, that's the story of her life.  :P

Well, she "got out" to the Paramount Theatre in Oakland, and if AGD was a little quicker at the draw, she would have met Brian after all these years.  :)

Thanks very much, Mikie, really appreciate that, no, really I do. Know how long I had to try and set anything up ?  THREE HOURS, and from a distance of something like 5000 miles. Next time, try engaging brain before you insult me. I did my very best: sorry it wasn't good enough for you. Sharon Marie was happy enough.

Don't thank me for more than making sure that your check gets deposited, and your mailing label is accurate! (and if you're a vendor, that your bill gets paid.)  David deserves all the credit for what goes in ESQ and how it looks -- along with contributors like Andrew, Peter Reum, and others.

David holds it all together, sometimes in the face of unwarranted adversity (like... prima donna contributors).

You jest, but you'd be surprised at how many emails and letters I receive that say, "I'm a Beach Boys fan.  Send me ESQ.  Thanks!"

Maybe I should try that -- "Dear Wall Street Journal - I like to dabble in the stock market.  Please send me WSJ.  Thanks!"

In the Mark Linett interview in the latest ESQ Mark states that they created a Bonus Disc for the MIC box set.  He says that this bonus disc was supposed to go to a certain (unnamed) retailer, but it wasn't negotiated in time.  He concludes with "We're hoping it will get released somewhere along the way.  It has more acapella and backing tracks and things like that."

I was thinking the same thing!  What email do you use for ESQ? Cuz if yer sending them out, that would probably make it worth it!

Has there been any thought to subscribers receiving access to archived issues online? ESQ's a great reads but back issues are prohibitively expensive for me. I know this is a fanzine and not Time Magazine with their millions, just a query from a devoted new fan

Lighten up, man, I was kidding. I know what you went through to get them together, and I'm sure it was much appreciated by Brian and his crew when they found out afterward. I wish I would have looked at Facebook before I left for Oakland, and I would have tried to help in some way, believe me. I think if somebody was paying attention to the concert and/or talking to other attendees, they more than likely wouldn't have been looking at Facebook during the timeframe of the concert. But you made a valent try at the last minute and that's commendable. I think Sharon Marie is still from the Santa Rosa or Sonoma/Medocino county area, is she not? If so, she had a pretty good one to two hour drive ahead of her after the concert.

You'd be surprised -- The current issues pretty much just break even, and what little profit we make is off of selling the back issues.  But we've done some $4.00/issue / $5.00/issue "Back Issue Blowouts" before.  The only ones that are more expensive are the most recent back issues (to incent folks to subscribe), and the ones that have a CD in them.

Dave and I have discussed publishing a "Best of ESQ" book at some point -- similar to what Don Cunningham did with "Add Some Music."

Lee, I'd pay good money for the back issue that had the 10-page photo spread of Bruce J. shorts.
Do you know if that issue was sold out?

Duly noted.  Let's hold Mark to it!  Can never get enough acapella and backing tracks!

The one with the free pair of Bruce shorts inside?  Afraid so...

Not sure what all the subterfuge about the Sharon Marie concert tix is about, but from my limited perspective, seems pretty cool that she got to see Brian's show from what sounds like primo seats. Still reeling from the abject innocence of the "I never heard of Jeff Beck" remark. And I did not take Mikie's comments as a slam at all. And we're colonists, for chrissake! I thought the Brits invented the dry, droll wit.  "She's a man, baby."  But, seriously, kind work and gesture, Andrew. And, by the sound of that letter, I'm sure Sharon had a wonderful time. Nice job, ol' chap.  Care for a spot of tea?

So, what's this about free subscriptions to the Wall Street Journal?

I give the idea to you.  I've already got enough money.

From the millions you made off of "Add Some Music," Don?  Because we know fanzines make a ton of money... ::)

I just wanna say THANKS to Don for doing "Add Some Music" all those years ago, to RIck and Phil (and Les - RIP) for starting ESQ, to Lee and Dave for continuing ESQ, to Mike and Andrew for "Stomp!", to Stephen and Lawrence for "BBs Australia", and to Alice for "BBFUN"...these, along with the various writings of Preiss, Leaf, and Elliott...these have been indispensible to my own development into something more than a "casual" fan. Along with the track credits on the back cover slick of "15 Big Ones"!  :)

Nice! I wonder if a vocal only Time To Get Alone is included...

I hope The Beach Boys eventually just offer the cd on their online shop.

Maybe you missed them, maybe you forgot to mention, but for me, I'd HAVE to add Marty Taber for " Friends Of the Beach Boys", The Clown Princes for "A California Saga" and Chris Allen for "Open Sky" !

Forgot about that one! I think I still have copies of the "Clown Prince's Of Rock & Roll - California Saga" fanzine. It was put out by a guy named Rick Colville from Joisey. Wonder whatever happened to him. He was a big fan and collector.

Yes, "A California Saga" was great. Some of the covers had cool illustrations by Dave "The Rave" particularly for the final issue in 1998 when the fanzine bowed out gracefully, not before issuing a cool calendar, though!.

It's a great shame that "Open/Endless Sky" has seemingly come to a halt. The filmed interview with Darian and Nick is a must-see!

Thanks!  I had a blast interviewing those two at Mark Linett's poolside (right outside of the studio).

They are both super talented!

Here's a list of the entire series…

Volume I: Wondermints
Volume II: Dean Torrence
Volume III: Van Dyke Parks
Volume IV: Tony Asher & Alan Boyd
Volume V:  Billy Hinsche & Bobby Figueroa

Great work, both by yourself and Chris!

I noticed that Volume 3 included a chapter link to sample interviews with Mark Linett and David Leaf. Are there any plans to release the full versions of these on a future Endless Sky DVD?

Could anyone tell me if in this number there was any question about the "I Believe In Miracles"/"Can't Wait Too Long" split and why the piano/clap/vocal part wasn't included in the box? I live in Brazil and don't have how to buy the magazine. I've read the 3 parts of that Rockcellar hoping Mark or Alan would talk about this
thank you for the attention

[off-topic] thank you very much Marcella. I've been stalking this board for a long time. I had tried to register 2 times but never received the moderation approval. This time I finally found it in the spam folder and am very happy to be here. I'm a musician and never met anyone who cares about BB or Motown, my favorite kind of music. Serious musicians in my country or play samba or Led Zeppelin sound-a-like stuff

Used to really like the fan mag "A California Saga", and was sad when it ended. Rick Colville was a great guy; I remember being invited to his house in Mercer County NJ years ago for a solo concert performance by Jeff Foskett. Cleared all the furniture out of his family room, and Fosket set up shop, took requests, etc...it was a great day. Not sure whatever became of Rick, but I hope he's well.

Agreed.  Don't know what became of Rick but he did some pretty good work, snagged some pretty good interviews (most notably he conducted the 1992/93 Mike Love Goldmine interview) back in the day. I think his last issue coincided with Carl's passing.

Rick came all the way out to Oakland for a BB Convention in the early 80's. Brought some nice tradables. Nice guy - huge fan. I remember he wore braces on his teeth. Don't remember seeing or hearing from him after that - just dropped off the Earth.
