Title: Underappreciated songs that have never made it to a released compilation
Post by: Eric Aniversario on November 29, 2013, 11:40:09 PM
What are some songs that you feel fall into this category? It was cool to see It's About Time get its due recognition on MIC. Here are some others that I feel need some recognition by being included on some type of compilation:

Keepin the Summer Alive
Still Cruisin (although some may argue that the album itself is a compilation)
All I Wanna Do
From There To Back Again
I Do Love You
Full Sail
Wake the World
Under the boardwalk
Match point of our Love
Winds of Change

I don't know where to start lol. There are simply too many underrated and under-appreciated BB's songs that don't really make it onto compilations.

Okay, I'll give it a try.
And this is for normal compilations, not Box Sets or Rarities collections.

Match Point Of Our Love.
My Diane.
Love Surrounds Me.
You Need A Mess Of Help To Stand Alone.
Here Comes The Night (Wild Honey version).
Slip On Through.
Lonely Sea.
In The Back Of My Mind.
Mona.
Maybe I Don't Know.
She Believes In Love Again.
Rock And Roll To The Rescue (I know, it was on Made In U.S.A. but that's out of print I think, and it's the only place you can hear it).
Still Cruisin'.
Make It Big.
I Do Love You.
Let's Go Away For A While.
Little Bird.
Be Still.
Be With Me.
Never Learn Not To Love.
It's About Time.
Cuddle Up.
Only With You.
Leaving This Town.
Just Once In My Life.
Airplane.
Good Time.
I'll Bet He's Nice.
Keepin' The Summer Alive.

That's all I can think of for now. In other words: etc.

I appreciate just about every beach boys song, but I don't believe they are all compilation-worthy. I think if you look at the following compilations:

Good vibrations: 30 years of the Beach Boys
Made in California
Absolute best vol 1&2
Endless summer
Spirit of America
Sunshine dream
Sounds of summer
The warmth of the Sun
Summer love songs
Made in USA
The platinum connection
50 big ones
Greatest hits vol 1: 20 good vibrations
Greatest hits vol 2: 20 more good vibrations
Greatest hits vol 3: the best of the brother years
Hawthorne CA
Endless harmony
Ultimate Christmas
Pet Sounds sessions
The smile sessions
Instrumentals (Japan)
10 years of harmony
Classics
Perfect harmony

...that about half the released catalog is on there somewhere.

That leaves just a moderate chunk of the catalog...And it amazes me some songs that aren't on any of those compilations (like those i listed above). I did just remember though that Full Sail was on that Carl Wilson compilation a while back. Eerie...Full sail just started playing on my computer as I was writing this sentence. And there are 3000+ tracks on my current playlist.

Have either "Good Time" or "I Went to Sleep" been on compilations?

Those two would be my vote.

They are both on MIC.

That Cuddle Up, Where I Belong and All I Wanna Do didn't make it either GV or MIC I find amazing... This band genuinely seems to have no sense of judgement when it comes to the quality (or lack thereof) of their respective material.

Christmas Album is constantly overlooked, even on career over-views like GV and MIU. Christmas Day aside, Brian's originals are all great and their harmonies on the traditional songs are stunning.

I agree with those mentioning All I Wanna Do.

The single mixes of Cuddle Up and Somewhere Near Japan are also criminally unavailable. It was daft for them to not have been included on MiC.

All I Wanna Do I think has to fall under this category as it's a highly-regarded song on a highly regarded album that has never appeared on anything else.  I notice how many lists exclude boxsets, but when you consider that All I Wanna Do also has never appeared on those, it's the epitome of underappreciated by any compilation makers.

I agree. I've also found it underrated because of Brian's voice/lead vocals. In some ways, Brian's vocals on "Blue Christmas", "White Christmas", "We Three Kings", and even "Santa Claus Is Coming To Town" are arguably - arguably - the purest, clearest, maybe pristine vocals Brian ever did. I love Brian's vocal work on Pet Sounds and SMiLE, but there is a slightly younger, innocent quality on the Christmas Album that is appealing.

Or better yet, a single instead of It's Gettin' Late.

I like It's Gettin' Late.  If the '85 album wasn't that great as a whole, it was a fine album for Carl.

It is a great album. Thanks to Carl. But Getcha Back was a perfect single, why Kokomo was a far bigger hit I will never understand.
It's Gettin' Late is a great song, but in my opinion not quite as good as Maybe I Don't Know.

Eric, Wake the World showed up on "The Beach Boys Ballads" which, to the compiler/s's credit imho, also contained Friends and Be Still!

This is vinyl days I'm talkin', so unsure if Ballads ever made it to CD.

I don't know if Here Comes The Night (Wild Honey) has been released on a comp or not, but if not, that's definitely up there. One of my favorite Beach Boys songs and one of their most genuinely "funky" sounding tracks.

Definitely All I Wanna Do. It's weird that the guys have totally forgotten this one (except maybe Mike).

Fall Breaks And Back To Winter is one of my favorites too. I can see why they wouldn't rerelease this one, but it's brilliant.

I know H.E.L.P was never released and was on the GV box set, but I really love that track. I think it's 100% Brian and the "confessional" lyrics are so charming. Should be more well known even though it wasn't released until '93.

Also:

I'd Love Just Once To See You
Make It Good
Diamond Head
My Diane
Pitter Patter

Here Comes the Night was on The Best of The Beach Boys vinyl from 1983 which went to number 1 in the U.K. I believe.

Well spotted! Love those 2 LPs.

For the record too, I have a really odd CD comp from Holland that has these tracks on it:

11) Let's Go Away For Awhile
12) I Know There's An Answer
19) Deirdre

I think "Don't Talk (Put Your Head On My Shoulder)" was on a 1968 compilation which had a very "odd" selection of tracks on it but it is a song that I thought was sorely missed on both the GV boxset and MIC.  Correct me if it has shown up elsewhere in more recent years!  It is truly a beautiful piece of music.

Has "Here Today" ever been on a compilation?
Too many compilations leave out "Dance, Dance, Dance". Even one compilation that leaves it out is too many, and I think there are several of them.

But Getcha Back was a perfect single, why Kokomo was a far bigger hit I will never understand.

Because Kokomo was in that movie. Had Kokomo been on '85 and Getcha Baclk in that movie, "Getcha Back" would have been the hit. That is, I think so, of course we'll never know.

:o I'm not a big fan of "what if" scenarios, but that's a doozy! There may be an alternative universe where Cocktail never happened but Herbie:Fully Loaded was an international smash.

If we’re talking any compilation albums here, not just BB compilations. . .

Warner/Reprise issued a long series of “Loss Leaders” LPs throughout (mostly) the 1970s, which included a number of BB songs you may not find elsewhere.  Pick ‘em out on this link: http://www.dustbury.com/music/wblist.html#start

What?  You don’t have time?  Fine, I don't mind doing all the work.  :)

This Whole World
It’s About Time
Feel Flows
Caroline No
Susie Cincinnati
Vegetables
Child of Winter

:) DOOZY is a noun for something that's outstanding or unique, within it's type. Usually gets equated with challenging or difficult items - eg, that's a doozy of an equation.  Some may use it as an antonym for doddle or piece of cake (an easy task)

Doozy and Humdinger (if you're across that one) are close cousins.

So, me describing your notion that if Getcha Back were on Cocktail was expressing appreciation for you throwing out an interesting idea - imo

Thank you Al for your explanation, now I get it - I'm flattened! Er, flattered I think it is. :wink Language has so many subtile facets, if you're not in a certain language on a daily basis, you can't know them all. For instance, I didn't get the drug language in "Somewhere near Japan" either.

This would almost be easier to just list the same ~20 songs that are on every BB comp. Then you would have your answer
