I couldn't say "Shes Going Bald" because of the "too late mama" 3rd section alone. Really love that boogie woogie type stuff Brian does.

Fall Breaks I feel is one of the most brilliant compositions Brian has ever done. I am shocked so many people voted for it. It is essentially the same 20 seconds repeated, but that sound is so utterly bizarre I love it. Couldn't believe what I was hearing when I first heard it (same with "Wonderful" and "Wind Chimes" on the album).

Good Vibrations doesn't belong but I still love it, and over the years it does seem to fit somehow. It's strange. "Whistle In" is catchy but THAT one is one where the 10 second loop aspect of it does get repetitive. It's short though, but I still had to pick something I guess. Smiley is one of my favorite albums of all time.

I'd say see how it plays out. I can see it not winning one of these rounds quiet easily.

I don't understand the problem if the same song wins two polls? The fact is some songs are duplicated on bb albums. I wouldn't want to vote in a survivor poll that had a song arbitrarily removed because it was duplicated on another album - kind of undermines the whole concept.

Pixeltwin removed songs when he did Little Deuce Coupe, and I agree with him on that. I think he should do the same with Good Vibrations on this album and Surf's Up on the Surf's Up album, as well as Cabinessence and Our Prayer on the 20/20 album and Cool, Cool Water on the Sunflower album!

"Cool, Cool Water" is practically an entirely different song.

Thanks, I didn't realise this happened with LDC. Still, I think you're better off leaving the chips to fall as they may. Cabin essence probably won't win the smile poll but may scoop up the 20/20 round. GV might go out early in smiley (h&v will win that) but may triumph in the smile rounds. That would be cool, right, but if you remove those songs there's less potential for interesting surprises.

Unlike some, I don't really care for the Smiley Wind Chimes, but it does have that beautiful tag.  So I'll vote for the repetitious Fall Breaks and Back to Winter.

I guess. As for 20/20, don't underestimate "Be With Me"

Good Vibrations and Surf's Up will not be removed. I feel their different enough and the context is contrasting enough that it is important to keep both of them in the voting roster.

That doesn't matter.  This discussion is which track you like best (ie. FAVORITE) of the songs that are on the album.  It has nothing to do with the overall consistency of the full album. 

Gettin' Hungry.  This track has always grated a little. But it's the only one-such on this album, so I'll be abstaining after this, unless it's not voted off this round.

For you maybe. For me and others the context of the album is important. I usually skip GV when listening to Smiley, therefore it's my least favourite on the album, despite its obvious greatness.

You She's Goin' Bald haters are insane! I have used this song to turn so many people on to the craziness/originality/uniqueness of the BB's music and it always goes down a storm. 'What??' was my cousin's reaction, who almost immediately thereafter went out and bought Smiley Smile. I remember the song blew me away on first listen and I still love it just as much...

Anyway, Good Vibrations again because I'm voting in terms of context, not just song quality, and to me GV just doesn't work on Smiley. I almost always programme it out when listening to the album.

Good Vibrations.......until it's gone.  That "SINGLE" (recorded Feb.-Sept. 1966, released 10 October 1966) was a YEAR OLD by the time the Smiley Smile "ALBUM" (released 18 September 1967) got out.  Good thing we are not doing Greatest Hits releases, or how many chances would it have to get to the finals.  Another issue: "You can't do that to a great song like She's Goin' Bald"   The "Too late mama..." section is hip, and too cool to go early.

This album I think fascinates me more than pretty much any other in the BBs catalog I think. It's the culmination and aftermath of the collapse of Smile and why Brian decided to go this direction and why he under-produced it so much is a question most fans tend to ask when they first listen to it. I wish there were more insight on the sessions besides that 2 min radio interview, the legendary Carl quotes and the Unsurpassed masters.

I'll give a vote here: Whistle In.  It's just not a track that I've got into to date, could be to do with its position at the end of the album, makes it feel like an afterthought.

Disappointed to read a few Gettin Hungry votes, love the organ sound, love slave-song vibe of the verses and Brian's *awesome* 'come the night time' line! and I enjoy the chorus  :)

First time I listened to Smiley Smile (near the beginning of my BB obsession) it was Fall Breaks... and, especially, She's Goin' Bald that made me sit up and go 'Wow! What a band!!' I just cannot believe that they've been voted off first. There's some really conservative members on this board...

Anyway, Good Vibrations, for the reasons already outlined.

Good Vibrations. I believe that GV was meant to be a stand alone single and serve as a bridge from PS to Smile in the same way the little girl I once knew was a bridge from summer days to PS. I don't think BW originally thought of it as being part of Smile, and to the extent that it was to be included on that album, and it actually being included on Smiley Smile, was simply a crass and vain attempt to continue cashing in on that single and to create demand for the new album (even though by the time the album was released GV was almost a year old).

Good Vibrations for sure. I always skip over it when listening to this fascinating and highly enjoyable little album.

It'll suck if GV doesn't make the final Survivor track-list as a result of people not voting for it because it doesn't fit on the albums it was included on, but that's not going to make me vote for it over Smiley Smile tracks that I prefer in the context of the album on which we're voting.

Personally I think we should have done what I previously suggested (to avoid this very situation), which was to include Good Vibrations as a definite on the Survivor track-list and exclude it from the Smiley Smile (and Smile) round.

Fall Breaks is probably the most Smile-ish song on the album to me.. More than Heroes & Villains. Delightfully weird and complex arrangement just like a lot of Smile songs IMO.

Yup. Every track on Smiley is great. I get that we gotta vote something off, but I really don't understand the dislike a lot of fans seem to have for so much of the Smiley material... It's some of the most original, unique and interesting music Brian Wilson ever gave us...

pixletwin,  I wasn't offended.  I just said it wrong, had a long day ahead of me.  I was running late -  getting the Christmas tree and doing the week-end shopping today.  That big snow/ice storm gets here sometime tonight.  Over now, it's all cocktail hour and dinner, it's finally Friday Night as Dennis said.  Let's Rock-N-Relax!!  Tonight I get to hear my new MIC disc 3.  And I got the new Blu-Ray Surround Sound DVD version of XTC's Nonsuch, so lots to look forward to.

It would suck big time if GV would get voted off this soon. I know it doesn't belong on the album, but we're voting for best and worst songs, and not for songs that do or don't belong, right?

If we were just voting for 'Best Songs' then why bother with the album-by-album format? Personally i'm voting for each song based on a number of factors, including how well it fits on the album - and GV doesn't fit on Smiley.

Whether it was meant for Smile or not, it fits, owing to the production. However, production-wise it doesn't fit on Smiley and that's not something that can just be ignored when being asked to vote for your 'Favourite song on Smiley Smile'.

When I'm in the mood to listen to Smiley Smile I usually don't want to hear Good Vibrations. Not because I don't like the song because I love the song. But I agree that it's out of context with the rest of the album.

Again, that's not what this is about. We're voting through each round to get to the final best TRACK from those that APPEAR on the album.  By the time we're finished it's about the best OF the bunch, not about the bunch itself.  But some people keep wanting to be obtuse.  ::)

It shouldn't matter how the song fits on the album. You vote for your favorite song as long as it's ON THE ALBUM! The answer isn't too hard to figure out.  It's because that's how they were released!  When we get to the end and do the final round, featuring the best of the best tracks from each album, are you going to judge THEM how well they fit in with each other too?  Why?  Why not?  

If we WERE judging how well things fit, we'd be doing another "personal tracklist" threads. By your logic (and not to single you out as I have absolutely nothing against you, but also the logic of everyone else applying the same "logic"), you could vote a song off in the first round (because it didn't "fit") but then vote to keep later (if it stayed on the list) because halfway thru, the remaining "album" could have a completely different flow. But no one does this.  Why?

Like I said, there are two different games going on here and one is about voting down some of the bands biggest hits and absolute best tracks just to show how cool it is to think outside of the box.   :whatever

If anything's baffling it's this constant need to dictate THE RULES and some sort of official criteria for voting songs off. Whatever happened to free choice and the right to express personal opinions? Oh I forgot, it's a Beach Boys board.

This is not a 'vote for the BB's most worthy song' poll. It's a poll that, by its very nature, considers the album and how songs relate to one another within the context of the album. Therefore voting a song off based on whether it fits with the other songs is entirely rational and in line with the aim of the game.

To suggest people are voting off GV to be obtuse is blinkered to say the least.

While I don't necessarily agree with Good Vibrations getting out, if a song's relationship to its album is someone's criteria I can't really disregard it.  That being said, that it almost went out before Gettin' Hungry was kind of a joke IMO.  Not saying the occasional person doesn't prefer it, but I know most would consider GV far far superior, and I think quality needs to count for something in these polls as well.

I am disappointed that so many treat Pixletwin's polls as "greatest hit" type rankings. Album has everything to do with context. I teach high school kids and I hate the way music today is viewed almost completely as a "singles"-based industry. My students pick and choose their favorite tracks from their favorite artists and stick their earbuds in or pop their Beats headphones on their heads and are done with it. When I put Friends on I don't want to listen to Wouldn't It Be Nice or This Whole World, even though those are some of my favorite BB tracks. Likewise, when I put on Smiley Smile, I don't want to hear Good Vibrations. Not to mention that historically Little Girl I Once Knew is the bridge to Pet Sounds, and GV is the bridge to SMiLE. Ranking GV as the best Smiley Smile track would be akin to ranking George W. Bush's handing of the 9/11 attacks (of 2001) as the greatest feat of his 2nd Presidential term (2004-2008). But again, just one of many opinions on an opinion board. I don't get seriously rankled by any of this. Love the polls and love the discourse, which is why I'm here….

I agree that GV is not exactly representative for what Smiley Smile is about as a whole. But since it is one of the songs that make up the album, I think it's just as much a Smiley Smile song as Little Pad, Gettin' Hungry or She's Goin' Bald is. Each of these songs are 1/11 of Smiley Smile.

I love the organ on Heroes and Villains. I love the minimalism of Vegatables. I dig the creepiness of Windchimes.. This is a tough one. The toughest, for me.

My favorite is... Wind Chimes. I think it pretty much provides everything in Smileysmile that is good in just one track.

"Vegetables" is a very close second, though.

Edit: Alright, I'm switching my vote to "Vegetables."

Wind Chimes gets my vote of what is left.  My real favorites are Little Pad, Whistle In, She's Goin' Bald, then this version of Wind Chimes.  I know it seemed to bother some of you, my relentless picking on Good Vibrations - but it's not even in my Top 50 favorite Beach Boys tracks.  now, let's listen to the wind swirl around the room...

Wind chimes..because it's one of the single most exciting piece of music BW ever wrote, arranged, produced,sang....and it's even or  better than Smile version!

My favourite song from the entire catalogue and therefore ever in the history of music. Whether it's as good a version as could've been constructed we'll never know but at the end of the day this is the single they put out and (unlike Good Vibrations  :p) aesthetically belongs on Smiley. A brilliantly focused track to offset all the acid casualty weirdness. As Mike Love put it: The last of the truly dynamic brian Wilson productions.

Looks like it might not clinch it though. Heroes needs your votes, Smileysmilers!

Not the biggest fan of the smiley smile version

Or maybe it's because it didn't fit on the album at all, and it would have worked far better on either the original Smile or as a non-album single

This shouldn't be about album structure though.  This is looking at the songs on their own.  At least that's how I see it, otherwise it's tough to separate one from another.

Not you, too Rocky Raccoon! If that is the case, then why delineate by album at all? GV is a top 10 BB track but not a top 3 SS track. I see no dis congruity at all with that because we, the smiley smilers, are intelligent enough to know the history of GV, SMiLE, Smiley Smile, and Brian's "fall from grace" for lack of a better word. It does not make us hipsters, it makes us informed

If it was about assessing songs individually then this should be one giant weakest link  thread dedicated to every beach Boys song recorded. Then you could argue that the album context was irrelevant. But in this case we are voting for songs within the context of the album and that context is one factor that some posters occasionally base their votes on. It's really not rocket science.

Even if you disregard the above argument, how would the proposed rules even work?

"Posters may only vote tracks off based on their individual merit and not for how they relate to other tracks within the album or how they relate to the album as a whole."

So if I choose to vote Sloop John B off early because I don't believe it fits thematically with the other Pet Sounds songs (easy BB fascists - this is not my genuine opinion), my vote should be disallowed?

Or if I vote Good Time off early because Brian's early 70s voice just doesn't fit with the other Love You songs, that vote should be voided?

Transcendental Meditation not calm like the other Friends songs but I can't vote for it because I have to imagine the other songs aren't there and just judge it on its own individual merits?

This whole Good Vibrations shouldn't have been voted off so early argument is completely absurd. I say we put it to Pixeltwin as the creator of the weakest link contests whether he wants some sort of fascist set of voting criteria in place or not. If he doesn't, then can we please just allow people to vote however they see fit and except such unsurprising developments as GV's early exit as exciting and unexpected turns that add to the drama and keep the contest interesting?

This. i'm still slightly baffled as to how people aren't understanding.

I think they have their sights set on a best-of-the-weakest-link-rounds-greatest-hits compilation and cannot comprehend why Good Vibrations may now not be on it.

Since I much prefer the Smile versions and the 2fer version of Heroes and Villains I am going to select..

I'd like to change my vote from Vegetables to Heroes & Villians

Here we are at the end of a tough round of Survivor. Lots of controversy about whether album context is a good qualifier to vote or if a song should be voted on/off by its merit alone. My personal opinion is that either way is fine.
