Smile's going to be tough for me because some of the "songs" on BWPS (and therefore TSS) are actually just parts/sections of other songs (which aside from "Our Prayer") are all listed on the 1967 hand written tracklist AND back cover slick.  However, I guess I have to go with "Gee" because unlike the others, if not for Darian, I strongly believe it wouldn't have been part of BWPS and therefore wouldn't be part of this discussion.

1st vote for I Wanna Be Around/ Workshop. Gee is too good & Mrs. O'Leary is an essential elemental. Have to say, these "survivor" threads make my brain hurt, and not in a good way, so perhaps I will refrain from further participation, as is my prerogative. Interesting concept, though....

This is crazy! Fire is a masterpiece! One of the most fascinating compositions in pop/rock history.

My question is what happens if Surfs' Up or Good Vibrations win twice.

The more unfinished tracks have an unfair disadvantage to me (I'm not much a one for listening to backing tracks, I do love to have a lead vocal), so i'm abstaining from this round. I'd vote if it were the Brian Wilson Presents... version.

Yep, me too I've decided. There's just too many extra issues involved outside of the songs here... I mean, I love Cabin Essence but I hate the production on the Smile Sessions version etc.

Dahhhhhhhhhhh this is too hard. I think I'll go with Look, especially if we're talking about the Smile Sessions version (those "child" fly-ins are horrid)

They aren't strictly the same. TSS versionis longer.

"Gee", I guess...not a lot there compared to some other tracks.  I expect the shortest and the most unfinished bits will be the casualties in the early rounds.

Edit:  changed my mind.  "I Wanna Be Around/Workshop."  I appreciate the audacity and humor of using power tools, but as is, it is to me the most extraneous and least well integrated piece of BWPS and the 2011 BB version.

WOAH! what's with all the dislike for Fire/Mrs. O'leary's Cow? It's the most legendary tune from Smile. It's also one of the most bizarre tune for the Beach Boys' catalog. It's also one of the only tunes I can play when I'm angry and feel the anger with the song. There's so much more that can be said. I just can't believe it. I figured Look or Friday Night or Holidays would be high on the list, I can understand Gee.

The Elements (all related parts of it).   It's the most unfinished part of the whole album and ends up being more annoying than anything else.  Mrs O'Leary's Cow is great, but after you've heard it a couple times it's just "meh", and Vegetables, for all it's commendable aspects, is just so tired.  Maybe that's because I've heard it a million times over the times, but I'm pretty well sick of it actually.

Hard to believe I'm voting off GV in TWO album survivors, but to me GV is the single best example of a stand-alone single--it truly is a bridge between Pet Sounds and SMiLE. I would definitely agree that GV belongs more on SMiLE than Smiley Smile, but still I vote it off nonetheless

Surf's Up - boring piece of sh*t that sounds nothing at all like Dick Dale and/or surf rock - lyrics avoid girls and cars altogether

I'm glad they gave up on this project and blessed us with "Do It Again" again and again and again and again and again and again and again etc.

...erm...yes I think so. But you never know who could be serious about such things around these parts.

But seriously, I am one of those who think that H&V was a poor choice for a single (45) follow up to GV. Works much better as the main theme of an album's narrative. But what would have been a good single to follow GV with? It surely isn't "Gettin' Hungry" I hope. I bet they could have evolved the catchy chorus of "With Me Tonight" into a multi-part song that maintained a constant tempo thus making it easier for the kids in the discotheques to groove to. Just putting that out there....

Cabin Essence - because they ruined a masterpiece with some deeply shitty production. I mean the chorus just sounds like one bit hissy mess. And it was so perfect on 20/20. Still amazes me how, after all that time putting it together and saying things like 'we're going to make sure we do it right' and so on, so much of The Smile Sessions just sounds so, so totally wrong.

This and "Vega-Tables" are assembled interestingly enough but the respective assemblers tried way to hard to MAKE them interesting. Both of them were finished in early 1967 (for Smile) and neither would have been released in their TSS forms and likewise, neither work for me in their Frankensteined forms.

I would say that "Our Prayer" made it a great distance, considering how quickly instrumentals and the like get voted out.

Disney Boy nails it.  I gave this disc a fresh listen last week-end, and the 20/20 version  is the Best.  And is much better in stereo.

Cabin Essence is my favourite BB song.  I've listened to some pretty muddy takes on shitty mp3s generations down from dubious sources; yet the good stuff shines through, so I'm not gonna pull up Mark and Alan on their presentation (which I think they did a pretty good job in context and with what they had to work with - which wasn't a lot as they didn't have access to all/some of the multis - wish someone would word us up on the definitive details one sunny day).

I'll give my vote to Wind Chimes (great song!).

Not in my case, I love Cabin Essence. It's just my least fave of the ones left. I'm basically picking my least fave child already. I just love SMiLE personally. SMiLE sessions box kick started my BB obsession

On the contrary, I love Cabin Essence - it's an absolute masterpiece! Which is why Alan and Mark's lousy production on the Smile Sessions version annoys me so much and why I'm voting for it. Come 20/20, I'll be Team CB all the way!

The 1971 version isn't only the definitive version but it's just about the best piece of music ever recorded (IMHO). Carl's vocal is incredible, the song has punch… it's flawless.

Actually, I'm going to have to agree with you on that. Carl doesn't seem to do as good as Brian on that song, and he certainly can't hit the high notes nearly as good

I don't know people like this version of Wonderful so much. It sounds even more unfinished to me than the Smiley Smile version.

That's not to say I don't like the TSSi version, only that the 71 version is superior. IMHO.

Cabin Essence - for the reasons already highlighted.

Listening to my Unsurpassed Masters Smile CD's yesterday and it struck me just how disappointing Mark and Alan's version of Smile was and, sadly, remains. In hindsight I think it was a mistake to try to join the tracks together and use fly-in's and so forth - the result is just a frustrating listen rather than an enjoyable one. And nothing frustrates me more than Cabin Essence.

Me too! Not sure why but I prefer Brian's vocal over Carl's and don't miss the moog at all. I think they did a good job with this edit.

It's funny how TSS throws up all sorts of complications regarding edits and mixes etc. If only we were just voting for the definitive versions of these songs.

I have to say I haven't noticed the differences between this and the 20/20 version of Cabinessence although I haven't scrutinized them too closely. I'm sure the detractors are right but I'd rather remain blissfully ignorant.

Another confession: I prefer the Smile H&V over the Smiley one. I love Western Theme. It gives the song an epic, cinematic feel and Linnett's mix is the best and most seamless that I've heard incorporating that section. Not to say it's better than Brian's 45 edit (how could it be?) but I prefer it.

I also prefer Good Vibrations with hum be doh! (sorry brian)

So my vote has to go to Wonderful. I prefer the sound overall to the Smiley version but I'm not 100% on those flown in yodels and I also feel it lacks something without that crazy Heroes middle 8. Wonderful really needs something jarring juxtaposed against that beautiful Bach-like melody. Presumably that's what Brian was reaching for with the Rock With Me Henry section.

Re Cabin Essence - the difference is that the chorus of the 20/20 version features pristine production and the chorus of the Smile Sessions version features a vast amount of hiss and noise. How could you have not noticed? On the very first listen to SS it made me go 'What the f**k....?'

Agreed.  Though I'm sure GV would have made it on to a hypothetical '67 Smile, it doesn't really fit the vibe of the rest of the material, IMO.  I always think of it as its own entity, the bridge between Pet Sounds and Smile.  I also don't like the placement of GV at the end of the sequence on the 2011 approximation.  It made a little more sense as a show stopper for the concerts, but I'll always think of Surf's Up as the true closing statement for Smile.

Good Vibrations fits for me just fine. Maybe it's things like the reprise in Look that ties it in, I don't know, but the other Smile songs always felt like a perfect extrapolation of all the cool sh*t going on in GV. The only thing that doesn't fit are the lyrics but the boy/girl theme fits with Wonderful ok. It could sit in a cycle of life suite if that were ever Brian's intention.

I agree it doesn't work as a closer. The perfect placement imo would be the opening track right after our Prayer. That or 1st track on side 2 as per Smiley Smile.

This is a hard one, but...Surf's Up.

Surf's Up     As said, this has more than one "best" version.  Great enough to win Best on this patched together release.  They did a good job, with what they had to work with.  Much better than any boot I've ever heard.  Better than what Brian and the Wondermints put together in 2004 too, at least for me.  Yeah, Surf's Up, my favorite of all the songs Brian and Van Dyke ever wrote.  Very close to my heart.  When we get to the 1971 album, it might just win again.

As I've already voted for heroes in the smiley thread, it has to be Surf's Up.

I also prefer the solo '67 version of "Surf's Up" Brian cut during the Wild Honey sessions than the one here.

Thanks for doing this, Pixletwin.  When this started I thought it was kind of a waste of time (and maybe it is!).  I mean, why not just have one poll for favorite song per album and be done with it?  But as I've gotten into this process, it has made me think about which songs I prefer and why, and it's also been interesting to hear others' opinions.  And when one person's favorite song is another person's least favorite, that really illustrates the wide variance in subjective taste.   So...let's celebrate that diversity - in people AND in music - and not bash each other for not being alike!

This is a worthy question.  The Surf's Up Surf's Up is a "fan mix" (for want of a better word) by the band and Stephen Desper; the TSS Surf's Up is a "fan mix" by (presumably) Mark And Boyd. Which leaves the only true versions of Surf's Up – true as in true to Brian's intention at that moment that they were recorded – as the version cut immediately after the Inside Pop session, and the versions known as the Wild Honey sessions version, one of which premiered on TSS.  Just Brian and piano, double-tracked or not double-tracked.  So unless compilation tracks will have their own Survivor battle, there'll never be a vote on an authentic version of Surf's Up.







That said, the '71 version rocks!

Surf's Up will be judged when we get to that album. Surf's Up is like Smile in a microcosm. There will never be a definitive Smile version, because it doesn't exist and likely never did.
