Title: Craig Breedlove & The BBs
Post by: CenturyDeprived on November 13, 2013, 01:33:45 PM
Did Craig Breedlove (the driver of Spirit of America) ever meet the BBs?  There aren't many people (especially non-musicians) who can say that they were namechecked in a BB song. I guess most of the people mentioned in Do You Remember were already (or would in the future be) associates of the BBs.

Johnny Carson was was admired by Brian. I still maintain Spirit of America is one of the forgotten songs that should have been included in greatest hits packages since the release of Sounds Of Summer

I also wonder if Carson ever said "hey thanks"  or something to that effect to acknowledge his namesake BB song. Although, I could imagine that its bizarre production would've made it a bit hard for JC to get into and be completely proud of.

He could have acknowledged the song before a wide audience in June 1984 if The Tonight Show hadn't been guest hosted by Joan Rivers :'(

Getting a little off-topic here, but there's this guy who made a list of some of the worst weird Beach Boys tracks.
Johnny Carson tops the list. But what pisses me off is how he considers "Holland" to be one of the BB's more obscure release, and how the albums from Wild Honey to Sunflower are a series of disasters. He also considers "Love You" to be an awkward Shipwreck!
Still, it's an interesting read that is worth checking out to see the viewpoint from a non-Beach Boy fan.

Johnny Carson tops the list.

Yet it made #26 in the June 1998 edition of Mojo magazine, as voted for by eminent fans, including our very own Andrew G. Doe  :woot

In a RS cover story Carson was asked if he had heard the song... He was not impressed.. Honest.!

I have to say I agree with his words.  Wild Honey through Sunflower were all disasters in terms of sales, and while I do love the album, Holland is pretty obscure compared to a lot of the band's releases.  The only one he seems to knock is Love You and "awkward shipwreck" isn't the worst thing that's been said about it.
