Title: Favorite leads
Post by: Micha on November 13, 2013, 05:42:22 AM
Inspired by the interview on the other thread, I've been thinking about my favorite leads of the BB members. I've come up with:

Brian: Papa-Oom-Mow-Mow (Party album)
Mike: All I Want To Do (20/20), with Big Sur as very close 2nd
Dennis: Lady (I guess many would opt for WIBNTLA here)
Carl: God Only Knows
Al: Help Me, Rhonda

I don't have any special feelings about the other members' leads. Which are your favorite leads, guys?

Mike: Aren't You Glad (Live in London album) or All I Wanna Do or Big Sur (4/4).
Dennis: WIBNTLA
Car: This Whole World or Marcella
Al: Rhonda
Bruce: Disney Girls
Blondie: Leaving This Town

Brian: Spirit of America

That's a surprise! :)

More than once I've shed tears of joy when Brian announces they set a new record that warm August morn... I think it's amazing how he manages to squeeze so much joy and hope from such a banal lyric consisting of technical details.

Young Brian had so many great leads... Don't Worry Baby, Warmth of the Sun, and (my personal favorite perhaps) We'll Run Away. Love his "Brian's Back"-era voice just as much.

Chosen completely off the top of my head. As others have said, ask me in an hour and I'll say something completely different:

Brian: Caroline, No (original, meaning slower, speed)

Dennis: Farewell My Friend

Carl: This Whole World

Mike: Meant for You

Al: I had a hard time choosing with Al, but I'm gonna go with the live version of Lookin' at Tomorrow

Bruce: Dierdre

Ricky: Here She Comes

Blondie: Wild Honey

I haven't heard too many many post-Holland songs as of yet, and like others my choices change all the time.

Brian: Please Let Me Wonder (So warm and gentle, Brian's voice sounds so innocent but it still packs a strong emotional punch)

Mike: Add Some Music To Your Day (Technically he only sings parts of the song, but I think his vocals sound very inspired). My more convential choice would be 'That's Not Me'

Carl: Feel Flows (See my thoughts about Brian above).

Al: Cottonfields (Very fun and energetic)

Dennis: Little Bird (His voice wasn't quite as good as his brother's, but I like his deeper tone and soulful delivery)

Bruce: Deirdre (Bruce's voice sounds crystal clear. There's just something endearing about how he sings this song)

Bruce: At My Window

Oh yes, I forgot about that one! That's my favorite Bruce lead.

Mike: Meant For You, All I Wanna Do, All I Want To Do, Here Today.

From my subjective point of view an absolutely excellent choice! :)

Brian; Ballad of Old Betsy.  (IMO, Scott Totten took on a tough lead when he picked this as his big lead on the M&B shows)

Some of Brian's very best vocals are on a lot of those early, sort of extra, or filler tracks.

You asked about fav leads, not fav songs.....

Jack: A Day in the Life of a Tree

John Stamos: Forever

But seriously, I just remembered what my ABSOLUTE favorite lead vocal is by Brian (there's so many to choose from...)

'She Knows Me Too Well'

That falsetto....the way he sings with such urgency and emotion. His heart is breaking, and he breaks your heart too.

This is a really tough question--good thread.   :)

The one one I know for sure is...

Brian: "Wouldn't It Be Nice"--the non-falsetto, high vocals are amazing and totally appropriate to the song.
