Title: All I Want To Do
Post by: dombanzai on October 15, 2013, 12:11:51 AM
Do any of the experts on here know whether Dennis intended to sing lead on this track or was it always his intention to have Mike singing it, which he does a damn fine job I have to say. I would have thought Dennis would have loved to have stuck his lead vocal on this.

Mike sings so powerfully on it that when I first heard it I thought it WAS Dennis!

Well, Dennis does his own thing on it, a fair representation of his personality, I was told.

A great song!! The dislike for it slightly baffles me...

I have to guess he just figgered Mike was right for the part, just as he had Carl sing "4th Of July", "San Miguel", "Only With You" etc.

One of Mike's best leads. Didn't know he had that sort of thing in 'im until hearing this song.

It's a nice rocker but it's one of the weaker tracks on the album.

Some people consider it a 'weaker' part of the album. I disagree. The song has balls, like most of Dennis' songs do. The Beach Boys needed some nasty rock songs like All I Want To Do. I wish they would've done more harder rock stuff like that. Maybe less people would've thought of them as surfing Doris Days, or whatever it was Bruce said.

Yeah. If only more people were aware of Beach Boys songs like this instead of pathetic crap like Catch A Wave.
Whenever I try and get friends into the Beach Boys, This is one of the first songs I go for to get them into it

Seriously? Catch A Wave is a much better song than All I Want To Do, lyrically and especially melodically.

What are you all callin' "weaker"?  All the tracks on 20/20 are strong.  Only weak track for me was Cotton Fields, and Al soon took care of that.  And bluesno1fann,  Catch A wave?  Crap?  Them's fightin' words!

Not really.
Then again, it's simply my opinion

You can have any opinion. The weakest track on 20/20 to me is I Went To Sleep, and lots of people just love it.

Awesome song. Just a little bit too short. It's highly underrated, one of the best rockers they ever recorded. It really is a great one to play to people who think Beach boys only did some surf songs and that's it. They are always surprised, in a good way.

great track. the version on Made In California is stonking, one of my favourite moments on the set.
It is one of the rare occasions when The Beach Boys actually rock real hard. Wish they'd done it more and credit to Mike for a terrific vocal performance.

Had no idea this was a Mike lead vocal. Always thought it was Dennis. Makes this pretty weak track just a little bit more interesting. Cool.

Wow,  That's a great Brian track.  I will say, they should have put it on Friends, ...not like they didn't have room.  I do have it on my Friends Comp.

Would have been an excellent trick if they'd managed to.

Friends was released 6/24/68...

Sessions for "IWTS" were 6/4/68 (track) & 11/18/68 (vocals)

Not a huge favorite of mine but I hardly ever skip it, unlike Bluebirds... Glad they didn't go in that hard rock direction but it's a nice (and successful) experiment.

:lol someone else does Dennis's thing, twice, indeed...

Great song, simple, driving - horns and fuzz - and good to hear Mike tryin' a different approach.

I don't know why anyone would not like either All I Want To Do or Susie Cincinnati – both are brilliant records. Actually, Susie Cincinnati is easily one of my favourite Beach Boys songs out of everything they have done – a great track to drive to. There's an idea for a new compilation" The Beach Boys Let Rip, featuring 20 great rocking Beach Boys tracks. All I Want To Do, Susie Cincinnati, Slip On Through, Keepin' The Summer Alive.... what else?

This is where they add in Hard Times to make us buy it. or just the Hot Mix of RockRoll Music. But add reverb so we all complain, and over compress it.

Do the original multitrack tapes for the of this song exist?

And if a vocals only mix were released, would it contain the fade? :)

(yes, I'm joking).

How long is that 'Session Tape' for the fade? Why was it not on UM?

And Im Going Your Way, It's a New Day, Marcella, and covers like Shake Rattle & Roll, Let's Dance, Mony Mony, RUby Baby, I'm a Man, Gimme Some Lovin'.  And throw in some live cuts like Johnny B Goode and Jumpin Jack Flash.  I think Capitol has it's next retread collection!

Speaking of "Sea Cruise," were there ever any backing vocals recorded for it? I would've loved to hear the BB's vocalizing on the "ooo-wee"s.

Tape is about five, six minutes - remember, it was done on an 8-track so both takes are there, on separate tracks. Why wasn't it on UM ? I'm guessing for the same reason little of 20/20 was: not all the multis were in the BRI vault.

that would be a very weird 5/6 mins to listen to... and then another 5/6 :D

The fact that there are 2 full takes of the fade is hilarious. Reminds me of the scene from Boogie Nights ... "Jack, I can do another take if you need me to". The BB's pioneered pornography too!

Good thing Murry wasn't in the studio to lend his two cents, Help Me Rhonda-style. Can you imagine the session tapes for a convo like that?

I have that same notion when fat ladies start to sing in Wagner tunes.

(Note: I'm not putting down obese people here, I'm referring to the quote "It ain't over til the fat lady sings.")
