Title: Did Dennis' solo career exist because he felt stifled in the BBs?
Post by: CenturyDeprived on September 21, 2013, 12:56:50 PM
Would "Pacific Ocean Blue" exist if Dennis had been taken more seriously as a songwriter within the BBs?

For example, if his talents had been better "recognized" in the early '70s, and the band let him become more the primary songwriter (continuing beyond Sunflower), I wonder if he'd still have had solo ambitions, or if those ambitions were a direct result of the band politics that, for example, caused his Surf's Up contributions to wind up evaporating? I'm thinking the reason we (fortunately) have "Pacific Ocean Blue" is due to those frustrations.

Considering the fact that Pacific Ocean Blue was his second attempt at solo album (the first was sporadic, from 1970-72), he was certainly taking it seriously, since he went as far as to release a single under the name Dennis Wilson and Rumbo.

Who/what is "Rumbo?"

I'm starting to think that the shambles known as "15 big ones" influenced him to take his solo stuff more seriously, after all isn't there an infamous quote about it by him????

I think that famous quote was about M.I.U., not 15...though 15 deserves it more than M.I.U. IMHO

Could it be that he went on his own because Brian obviously had begun sliding back again into what would become his most painful years? And that Mike was gaining dominance as a result?

Well deduced, Columbo. I imagine Dennis just pretty much gave up on trying to keep the BB's on a forward-thinking path and went off to do this own thing.
