Title: "Smart Girls" mentioned in new interview.. of Costello & The Roots! Post by: Ziggy Stardust on September 20, 2013, 09:02:03 PM http://www.elviscostello.com/news/somewhere-an-orchestra-is-playing-elvis-costello-and-questlove-conspire-to-change-the-subject/480
Quote Elvis just wanted to do something crazy and different. He wanted to find his mojo. Me, I wanted to just reel it in as normal as we could without it being “Elvis makes his rap record.” I don’t know if you recall the disastrous Brian Wilson, Dust Brothers, post–Paul’s Boutique experimental rap album. Do you remember that? No. I want you to Google "MC Brian Wilson," It’s a song called “Smart Girls.” Brian Wilson is rapping. It’s just as crazy as it sounds. I’ll give him props on one thing: Whenever the awkward white guy starts rapping, the second line is always, “And I’m here to say.” I’m proud of the fact that he did not start the rhyme, “Well my name’s MC Brian/And I’m here to say…” He did not do that. That, to me, is a miracle. Not to get off track… ;D If you havn't heard about it, check out their new album, surprising great collabo! http://www.latenightwithjimmyfallon.com/video/elvis-costello-and-the-roots-walk-us-uptown/n40855/ Title: Re: \ Post by: Rocky Raccoon on September 20, 2013, 09:19:12 PM I agree that Wise Up Ghost is a fantastic album.
Title: Re: \ Post by: Wirestone on September 20, 2013, 09:20:41 PM I was blown away by it. My favorite Costello record since the Bacharach one.
Title: Re: \ Post by: jeffcdo on September 20, 2013, 09:22:31 PM Not a fan of the new album. I have no desire to hear "Pills & Soap" with hip hop drums. At least "Smart Girls" was funny and catchy.
Title: Re: \ Post by: Ziggy Stardust on September 20, 2013, 09:33:36 PM Well it isn't just random hip hop drums tho, it's The Roots.. and man does Costello deliver! i gotta say me too, my fav of his in a long while, didn't thought this would work out this well.
Title: Re: \ Post by: runnersdialzero on September 20, 2013, 09:48:49 PM He forgot that all white rapper one-off songs start off with "My name is _______", though. >;(

Title: Re: \ Post by: Jim V. on September 21, 2013, 10:46:24 AM I love Elvis, I've got everything he did from My Aim Is True through Blood & Chocolate. But everything he's done since just doesn't do it for me. I think some of the stuff on All This Useless Beauty is really nice and I heard a few nice (if retro) things on Momofuku, but overall he just doesn't really do it for me anymore. I think he's a bit unfocused and that's why a lot of his stuff doesn't really hit anymore. I think that instead of doing a different genre experiment every album he might be better served trying to reel it all in to a cohesive album. Instead, it seems like he will do a classic Attractions style record (When I Was Cruel, Momofuku), baroque or piano type stuff (Painted From Memory, North), or folkier/country type stuff (National Ransom), whereas in the old days he would just synthesize all his interests into great records like Imperial Bedroom.
Title: Re: \ Post by: Ziggy Stardust on September 21, 2013, 11:19:44 AM Aw man i see what you mean and kinda agree, i love IP, but i like some of the stuff he did after B&C, like Spike, and Brutal Youth, thought these are pretty strong at least.
Title: Re: \ Post by: humanoidboogie on September 21, 2013, 01:25:45 PM Costello has done a few decent songs.
"Smart Girls", on the other hand, is a fekking masterpiece. I use that song as my wake up alarm. Think about it. Starting every day with that bootiful sax intro and then in comes Brian... Title: Re: \ Post by: runnersdialzero on September 21, 2013, 02:12:26 PM I don't understand the sax intro, nor do I understand it being followed up with "HEE HEE HEE... HEE HEE HEE HEE HEEE HEEHEHEHEAJ". I just... don't understand any of it.
Title: Re: \ Post by: doing on September 21, 2013, 02:43:43 PM Smart Girls is not meant to be understood, it can scarcely be comprehended. I honestly wonder how much time and effort was expended on this track?
Title: Re: \ Post by: Wirestone on September 21, 2013, 03:38:45 PM My favorite EC is post Blood and Chocolate, but pre-North.
And Smart Girls is unadulterated cack. |
