http://www.personalitydesk.com/types Inspired by another thread on personality types, I'm wondering if those of you familiar with the Myers Briggs personality type system can outline each of the Beach Boys type. I'm really not sure for most of them. I'd have to put more thought into it. I'd peg Brian as more of an INTP, IMO. Haha good point. Why do you think of him as INTP, out of curiosity? I'd love to hear your thoughts. I tend to believe he was a "feeler" for the third letter because he was very sensitive (though INTPs sometimes are, of course) and he wasn't necessarily incredibly logical. He did a lot on impulse. The N/S is hard for me to peg because he obviously had such heightened senses, but was a visionary with his music. So I've always been a bit confused with how that would play out in his case. Additionally, Wilson was very conscious and expressive of his feeling (particularly through music) a trait not necessarily common to INTPs. Another difference between most INTPs is that he was never very strong verbally. But he definitely has the spacy INTP personality trait. Brian is emotional and creative, but reading interviews with him over the years, he has a "thinker" type of intelligence and approach to music. A guy like Bob Dylan seems like the pure creative/artsy type. Brian's ability to see patterns in music and arrange it, such as breaking down and reassembling Four Freshman harmonies, is evident of a more analytical, as opposed to "feeler," type of personality. That is a good point. He's also talked about how he listened to Phil Spector's "Be My Baby" so many times to analyze the production. He also enjoyed his independence and had a solo leadership approach during his heights in the 60s. The autonomy is very typical for INTPs. So you may be on to something. Being an INTP myself, and having spent tons of time analyzing Brian's music, I'd actually be pretty excited if he is an INTP. :) Haha. I would doubt that the primary dichotomy would permit any such movement, but how about in the "lower-level" descriptors?
It seems that Brian might well have been INTP up until Smile, and deviated at that point. How do feelings of ambivalence factor into this? Brian clearly had ambivalent feelings about his band members (even his brothers) and he clearly felt the need to transcend his original working relationship with Mike--who didn't make that easy for him. Did all that push him into a semi-trapped position wherein his own shift to an ITFP might have become a vicious circle?? |
