Title: In light of MIC...Your updated custom album tracklists Post by: coco1997 on August 25, 2013, 02:45:27 PM One of the many reasons I looked forward to MIC was to finally insert some long lost gems into my compendium of alternate universe Beach Boys albums. Having now heard the set, I've played around with some of the unreleased material on MIC and worked it into some assorted BB albums in an attempt to solidify and improve them. The MIC additions are in bold:

Title: Re: In light of MIC...Your updated custom album tracklists Post by: coco1997 on August 25, 2013, 02:56:27 PM You cannot be serious. You have to imagine Brian's 1965 voice. Despite his ragged-sounding '76 vocals, it's a great song. Title: Re: In light of MIC...Your updated custom album tracklists Post by: Nicko1234 on August 25, 2013, 02:59:25 PM You cannot be serious. Title: Re: In light of MIC...Your updated custom album tracklists Post by: Tilt Araiza on August 25, 2013, 04:01:34 PM I haven't rejigged the albums as such, but on my megaplaylist (299 songs) I've got the long version of Meant For You after Transcendental Meditation as a reprise and I Believe In Miracles before the Smiley Vegetables as a kind of Bizarro Our Prayer (H&V is in the Smile section of the playlist).
Title: Re: In light of MIC...Your updated custom album tracklists Post by: Sheriff John Stone on August 25, 2013, 04:13:51 PM This "(Wouldn't It Be Nice To) Live Again" has me half nuts. I don't know what to make of it, why it never saw the light of day, where it belongs, what it means in 2013. I'm cutting the grass singing it, I'm driving around singing it, I'm watching YouTube videos of it. I put it on my personal Surf's Up album, which I've now changed for the third time in three days! As of today, this is what I'm using:
Surf's Up 01 Feel Flows 02 Lady 03 Sound Of Free 04 Long Promised Road 05 Disney Girls 06 Student Demonstration Time * 07 Don't Go Near The Water 08 Lookin' At Tomorrow 09 A Day In The Life Of A Tree 10 Til I Die 11 (Wouldn't It Be Nice To) Live Again 12 Surf's Up * I'm willing to sacrifice "Student Demonstration Time" because I really like "Disney Girls" as the closer of Side A, with that whistling fade... Title: Re: In light of MIC...Your updated custom album tracklists Post by: Ram4 on August 25, 2013, 04:26:05 PM I'm going to make a BB playlist in iTunes from the beginning to end with everything in order, but I might put some songs in different places to make some of these albums more enjoyable.
Title: Re: In light of MIC...Your updated custom album tracklists Post by: Wrightfan on August 25, 2013, 05:10:40 PM Is Barnyard Blues Surf's Up era? AGD's site says yes but some posts here seem to indicate it's 1972 or later.

AGD's site says yes but some posts here seem to indicate it's 1972 or later. His session dates suggest Oct. 1974 - which would certainly fit with Dennis' vocal quality. It's possible that he recorded a basic track during 1971 and returned to it with vocals three years later, or it's a simple case of confusion. Title: Re: In light of MIC...Your updated custom album tracklists Post by: coco1997 on August 25, 2013, 07:29:46 PM This "(Wouldn't It Be Nice To) Live Again" has me half nuts. I'm cutting the grass singing it, I'm driving around singing it, I'm watching YouTube videos of it. I put it on my personal Surf's Up album, which I've now changed for the third time in three days! Agreed, Sheriff. The decision to place WIBNTLA at the very end wasn't as obvious as I assumed it would be. "Til I Die" is a great way to end the album, but WIBNTLA seems to work best as a closer and I just couldn't find another spot in the tracklist where it worked. Title: Re: In light of MIC...Your updated custom album tracklists Post by: Christoph on August 25, 2013, 07:55:23 PM Coco, I dig the albums you compiled there. The alternate mix of "It's ok" doesn't impress me that much though, I prefer the album version.
Man, that surf's up album really got me thinking. I liked the idea of opening with Feel flows, although I'd choose Sound of free as an opener. I'd probably get rid of SDT in favor of 4th of july or/and Fallin in love. My main doubt is: Leave Surf's up on the album (as a closer, obviously), or just leave it to Smile, where it belongs, and end with WIBNTLA.... So for the moment it would be: 1) Sound of free 2) Don't go near the water 3) 4th of july 4) Feel flows 5) Take a load off your feet 6) Disney girls 7) Long promised road 8) Falling in love / Lady 9) Looking at tomorrow 10) A day in the life of a tree 11) Til I die 12) Wouldn't it be nice to live again Maybe call the album "Sounds of free" since the title track is gone now. Title: Re: In light of MIC...Your updated custom album tracklists Post by: coco1997 on August 25, 2013, 08:06:32 PM Coco, I dig the albums you compiled there. The alternate mix of "It's ok" doesn't impress me that much though, I prefer the album version. Hmm...I'll have to listen to the new mix with greater attention. I do like the little synth intro that isn't on the "15 Big Ones" version, though. Title: Re: In light of MIC...Your updated custom album tracklists Post by: Micha on August 26, 2013, 12:34:12 AM Coco: What is "Sad, sad summer"?
And IMHO "Brian's Back" should seriously have been voted off the set by somebody, despite the photo in the book showing Brian's back with the words "BRIAN'S BACK" on it. Title: Re: In light of MIC...Your updated custom album tracklists Post by: Christoph on August 26, 2013, 03:44:04 AM "Brian's back" is another one of those mediocre / bad songs I like to listen to because of Carl's singing. Just as a follow-up FYI, Alan Boyd has previously stated here that it's Dennis's piano demo that dates from 1971 (hence, that first date on Andrew's site), while the later, "proper" recording indeed dates from "circa '74" (i.e. the actual one on the box set). :) Title: Re: In light of MIC...Your updated custom album tracklists Post by: jvcthome on September 06, 2013, 02:52:11 PM The Beach Boys - Imagination [1998]

That's the great thing with digital files, you can "Roll Your Own" for anything. :) I think that's because the Beach Boys had a tendency to discard a lot of great songs in favor of lesser material on a lot of LPs. The Beatles generally released their best stuff. Title: Re: In light of MIC...Your updated custom album tracklists Post by: B-Rex on September 18, 2013, 10:37:28 AM The Sun Will Shine Forever

Til I Die This is always in flux but is how I have it today. Title: Re: In light of MIC...Your updated custom album tracklists Post by: B-Rex on September 18, 2013, 10:48:02 AM The Beatles only mistakes with albums were releasing songs as singles, which should have been on albums. Revolver should have had Rain, Pepper, the obvious ones, Strawberry Fields and Penny Lane. the White Album, as broad as it was, overlooked some good Harrison tunes and Let it Be certainly was Beach Boys like in that some excellent tunes were left off in favor of some questionable tunes.
