Works good and sounds fantastic!  Carl sings it beautifully. Dennis on the end. This has been booted before, right?

Please release the entire show!

We're due for a tasty 70s live box. Hmm, what would be a good name for it?

There needs to be a Dennis Wilson boxed set or something, I don't care. That man could compose MUSIC. Didn't you almost start to cry when Carl started singing. So many people who DIDN'T hear this music, so sad. For that window of time - 1971-73 - Dennis had an incredible singing voice - and we're only hearing it NOW! Sorry for the rambling...

Yep, on the much-discussed-as-of-late Carnegie Hall soundboard. :)

I've always loved this live version, from the the first time I heard it nearly 15 years ago. So much so, that I always planned to recreate a studio version using the Holland take, married with the tag from Dennis's solo version. Just like they do it here.

Never got around to it though. Maybe now. Inspiration.

Thought so!  Just pulled it out to verify - Hang Ten 001.  11/23/72 at Carnegie.  They gotta release the whole thing! Fantastic sound quality. Heard they found another tape or the rest of it or sumpthin'.

BEACH BOYS ARCHIVE INCLUDES LEGENDARY 1972 CARNEGIE HALL TAPES

by Howie Edelson

The Beatles aren't the only '60s icons preserving their legendary catalogue and vault; the Beach Boys' team is hard at work cataloging the thousands of tapes which make up their archive. The team -- chief archivist Alan Boyd and producer/engineer Mark Linett -- has recently collected all of the known elements of the band's unfinished 1967 album Smile, and have now uncovered the multi-tracks for the Beach Boys' two historic concerts at New York's Carnegie Hall on November 23rd, 1972.

For years, only half of one of the shows has been available in pristine stereo on the underground market. Boyd says that the band's company Brother Records is in possession of all of the multi-track masters of the shows, and is now collecting appropriate film and video footage which could be included on a potential project.

Elvis Costello saw the Beach Boys six months prior to the Carnegie Hall show in his then-hometown of Liverpool, and was amazed at how the band's current image and musicality transcended their iconic '60s image: "I saw the Beach Boys in Liverpool at the Liverpool Empire. That was a very different experience. They were in that... one of the periods, although Carl and Dennis (Wilson) were singing in the band, Brian (Wilson) wasn't with them, but the Surf's Up album and the beautiful Carl And The Passions album were out -- and Holland -- those records were out. Dennis sang an extraordinary version of "Cuddle Up" at that gig, which I'll never forget. That was an incredible thing to see; because although the main writer wasn't present, you realize that they had reclaimed themselves as a creative band away from the cliched idea of these guys that sing these car songs and dress in stripey shirts."

The songs performed by the Beach Boys at Carnegie Hall: "Sloop John B.," "You Need A Mess Of Help To Stand Alone," "Leaving This Town," "Darlin'," "Only With You," "Heroes And Villains," "Long Promised Road," "Don't Worry Baby," "Student Demonstration Time," "I Get Around," "Marcella," "California Saga," "Help Me, Rhonda," "Medley: Wonderful/Don't Worry Bill," "God Only Knows," "Do It Again," "Wouldn't It Be Nice," "Wild Honey," "Good Vibrations," "Surfin' U.S.A," "Fun, Fun, Fun," and "Jumpin' Jack Flash."

The official members of the Beach Boys at the time were Dennis and Carl Wilson, Mike Love, Al Jardine, Blondie Chaplin, and Ricky Fataar.

Alan Boyd says that his and Linett's primary public duties for the Beach Boys are locating the masters to the band's earlier work, and remixing them into modern stereo mixes for the band's numerous career-spanning compilations: "The fans and the public at large really seem to like these new stereo mixes, and that was really apparent when Mark did Pet Sounds in 1997. And the reaction to that is so strong that he started looking at other albums and other tracks, so every time we have the opportunity -- we did a lot of this on the Hawthorne record -- we've been going back and doing that, 'cause there's so much pressure brought to bear, y'know, in the market, for things to be in stereo."

Boyd and Linett -- both Grammy nominees -- have collaborated on such recent Beach Boys collections as Endless Harmony, Hawthorne, CA, Good Timin': Live At Knebworth England 1980, The Warmth Of The Sun, The Original U.S. Singles Collection The Capitol Years 1962-1965 box set, and the recently released Summer Love Songs.

Linett is also known for his work with Brian Wilson over the past two decades -- including the revamping of the entire Beach Boys' catalogue beginning in the late 1980's. Linett's work on 2004's Brian Wilson Presents Smile was nominated for a Grammy for Best Engineered Album (Non-Classical).

The Beach Boys -- featuring Mike Love and Bruce Johnston -- perform tomorrow night (September 5th) in Saint Petersburg, Florida at Tropicana Field.

Beach Boys cofounder David Marks will join Southern California rock legends Dean Torrence of Jan & Dean and Billy Hinsche at Endless Summer Quarterly's East Coast Convention dubbed the "Pet Sounds Safari" on September 11th and 12th in Cornelius and Davidson, North Carolina -- which is just 20 minutes North of the Charlotte Metro area. Proceeds from the convention will benefit the Cornelius Animal Shelter. For ticket, schedule, and venue information, log on to endlesssummerquarterly.blogspot.com.

Brian Wilson kicks off his next series of solo dates on October 23rd in Mount Pleasant, Michigan at the Soaring Eagle Casino & Resort.

Wilson has just added a new date to his itinerary, and will play on November 12th in Lowell, Massachusetts at the Lowell Memorial Auditorium.

Whew… also a Mac user and couldn't do anything with the .asf file, even with Flip4. Contemplating using Audio Hijack to re-record it as an .aiff file for iTunes… and yes, I know I'll have the box any day now but this is (as stated earlier) one of the very finest live cuts I've ever heard, and I can't resist!

Had some of the leaks on a repeat shuffle yesterday, all day while working. What an eclectic, great mix. MiC's a treat already.

really great performance from Carl.......... sounds like the group by this point were getting shitty with fans,
wanting only to hear the hits, glad they had the balls to forward new music on the crowd.......
that was one of the highlights of this era of Beach Boys........until the 80's I guess, or late 70's..... when they basically became
a greatest hits band........
what I have enjoyed with this and the recent Dennis 'help me rhonda', even 'where is she?' is how good sonically these have been recorded.......
great engineering, and really good on the ears!

Its unbelievable how Dennis never had the commercial spotlight that his brilliant talents deserved at that time.
The reasons must be myriad.
Lets be thankful that we are getting to hear his voice now. That Rhonda track knocked me out!

This is great. I remember first hearing this on Goodbye Surfing, Hello God! and thought the quality was pretty good, although a bit hissy. Then I heard it in upgraded quality on Carnegie Hall 1972 and thought it couldn't sound better. And now this... Very well recorded and mixed.

BTW, the original MSN link doesn't have that weird effect/artifact on the piano. I guess something went wrong during capturing or encoding...

Now THIS - this is a live track worth having. I was totally underwhelmed by the 'Wendy' one the other day, which seems to be on the box more as if to say 'aren't we clever that we were able to rescue this 1964 live broadcast' rather than because the performance was interesting or memorable in any way, but THIS - this is gold dust.

The funny thing is, the arrangement isn't really any different from what's on Holland (and usually I prefer my live tracks to have something different about them, rather than just being carbon copies of the album version arrangement with some extra crowd noise at the start and end...), but the live performance here is so captivating that it totally won me over. Like many above, I think I prefer this to the album version.

That Carl geezer sure had some pipes, di'n 'e?

It's actually more prominent on the bootleg.  At least the copy I have.  Sounds like digital artifacts from too much noise reduction.  I'm guessing the early boots of this show were circulated on cassette & gathered some tape hiss over the generations.  When these things began to circulate digitally, people tried to reduce the hiss, sometimes overdoing it.  Anyway, this version sounds quite good to me, compared to what I'm used to.

Like some of you, I couldn't open that strange file format in any of my note program. Tried to follow all the suggested advices but nothing worked. So, I'm very glad to see that Cliff solved it by posting another mp3. Thank you, friend!

About the song: I wholeheartedly agree that live version is a great deal better than the Holland track, even though it's sung again by Carl (Dennis is only in the tag). Before listening to this, I used to think that Dennis fitted more for singing his own composition. Now I changed my mind & came to conclusion that Carl can be real good when necessary. Well done!

Re wavering sound effects: in my humble opinion, it's kind of cool! Adds somewhat psychedelic dreamy color. And I'm a huge fan of the genre!

Ah, now I hear what you mean...

The mp3 file that Cliff so graciously put up is faulty for some reason. There's something weird going on with the stereo image, which is most noticeable on stuff that's not centered (the piano, audience, etc.).

However, listening to the MSN stream, there is a very minor wobble or vibrato to the piano for some reason.

On the Carnegie Hall 1972 CD, you clearly hear digital NR going on, but that's another type of artifact and have nothing to do with the stuff above. Seems like people used NR and then put this material onto cassette because the NR artifacts are underneath the tape hiss.

Anyway, good song. Can' wait for the box. Weetabox.

Also, I downmixed Cliff's mp3 to mono, which seemed to remove the distracting ping-pong effect.
It's not distracting at all - it's in & stylish!
