The Smiley Smile Message Board

Has this board every tried voting on the best Beach Boys album in a bracket style format, with albums facing off against each other one round at a time? If not, I think this would be a pretty good idea. I'd like to see which albums would "win" facing off against each other.

I feel like it would come down to Pet Sounds vs. Smile.
Then, I think Pet Sounds would take it.

But, if we don't include Smile, does anything really stand much of a chance of beating Pet Sounds?

All the Smile-o-philes would come out of the woodwork and it would be no contest. SMiLE would win it. At the end, it would come down to maybe Sunflower and Today, then between Pet Sounds and SMiLE. SMiLE would be left standing. Don't even need brackets.

No because it IS the best Beach Boys album. That is almost fact.

In fact, more of that stuff would be a very welcome respite from the endless M&B vs. BAD stuff that has polluted this board for lo these many months.

That said, a bracket approach probably doesn't add much (if anything) to the earlier album polls, which IMHO provide some interesting food for thought.

Not so convinced smile would win. I did a poll for smile vs pet sounds a while ago and pet sounds won easily from what I can remember. The problem is the only viable version of smile that you can poll is the official version and many people have issues with that.

That said, maybe the bracket format (whatever that is) would be different. I say go for it!

Also anyone have the time or inclination to do a series of weakest link polls for each album?

I know that stuff like this is fun, and I respect that. It sure does beat the "Mike is the devil, killed the beach boys, caused BAD to be formed, and turned Historical Johnston into the world's oldest cheerleader" schtick. But, it's like....when did the media section become not enough? Perhaps we need an individual song review sub forum in the media section.

I don't think we need another poll but the pre 1966 LP's do get a bit overlooked at times.

you should've contact mods in the 'ask the moderators' thread. its their job to say yay or nay to new ideas.

I think the bracket is a good idea.  Sure, it'd probably yield either PS or SMiLE as the winner, but it would still be fun to votes on all the other albums, too! :)

The board should do this in the winter when BBs news is really slow.

Maybe we could do an album by album "survivor" thread where each week presents all the tracks from a single album and every 4 days or so we vote off the least favorite track.

It might not necessarily be a Pet Sounds-Smile final... what if the draw was completely random and they got each other in the first round?

Or just assume these two would dominate any other album (apart from each other, of course) and exclude them both. Then it's wide open.

They do this on the Hoffman board and it can be quite fun.

No need for brackets, it's pretty obviously unanimous.

Well, the Sunflower/Reverberation/Add Some Music/Landlocked (whatever name you want to give it) sessions as a whole. I think their most productive period ever as a band?

I think Pet Sound would definitely win the "tournament." But I'm not as interested in the final result. I'm more intrigued to see individual match ups like "Today" vs. "Summer Days." Or "Surf's Up" vs. "Love You." Just using those as examples, I'm not sure how it would be set up. Seeing people vote on which albums they like better head-to-head would be a nice exercise.

Yeah, the individual match-ups would be interesting to see.  I'm aware we did the two-fers against each other, but it would be neat to pair albums up randomly.
