Title: MiC Song/Tracklisting Discussion Thread
Post by: Vegetable Man on August 07, 2013, 02:22:54 PM
There's a general discussion thread, a price discussion thread, but there isn't a thread for the music of MiC (and isn't that what this is all about?). It's probably a little early yet, but I figured we could use a thread where people could discuss the tracklisting, the unreleased songs (once we hear them), the songs that made it, the ones that didn't, etc. I know some of this has been going on in the "Amazon" thread, but it's been getting cluttered recently, so now we've got this to go to. I hope this will work out. Enjoy discussing the music.

Talked to a guy on Twitter who's heard the whole thing. This is what he had to say about "My Love Lives On":

"Finally got to "My Love Lives On." Very stark, very rough, and not just because it's Dennis and a piano..."

"Dennis sounds ragged and very alone, but there's an unmistakable tenderness and vulnerability. Painful, but in a good way."

I don't know I guess I'm not as excited as most on here at the prospect of this box set's imminent release.  I'm not trying to rain on any parades or throw cool water on the fire (see what I did there?  ;D) but to be quite honest with the exception of a few gold bars here and there, the box set is really a rehash of what most of us already have in our collections.  That is to be expected and I have my copy of MIC already on pre-order but I'm actually more excited about the packaging at this point than the music itself.  As I mentioned way back when I guess I'm envious of the consumer who is going to buy this box set as their initiation into The Beach Boys' catalog.

You know that moment we no doubt all experienced when the music is all fresh and mind-blowing?  Yeah definitely envious of those who will be picking up this package with that frame of mind going in.

I am also stoked about the package - yearbooks are very cool and I still have mine from both primary and secondary school

Which ones are people excited about?  (Apart from WIBNTLA; too obvious).

I'm probably most excited about getting a (hopefully) clean sounding version of "You've Lost That Lovin' Feeling."  I love Brian's production on it, but I've never heard it with good sound quality.

The Dennis track that I'm actually probably most excited about is "Barnyard Blues" because I like a lot of his rockier songs and I've heard almost nothing about this one.

Being fond as I am of the Wild Honey album, I'm looking forward to the stereo mix of "Country Air" and the live version of "Wild Honey" with Blondie on the lead.

The live versions of "Friends," "Little Bird," "Only With You," and "It's About Time" will also be welcome.  It would have been nice to see some live versions of Love You songs like "Roller Skating Child" or "Honking Down the Highway," but I guess we can't have everything.

I'm probably most excited about Brian's solo demo of "California Feelin'".  I've always liked that song and was disappointed just slightly that they "Anthology 2'd" the group version of the song.  So it's nice that we'll have a (presumably) untouched demo available on this set as well.  I'm curious about the wording on the "Don't Worry Baby" outtake as well.  An alternate version of the song could be a revelation as for years this was one of those session tapes that went missing.  But the phrasing of the description worries me slightly and I wonder if we are going to get a brief sound bite of say the chorus or something with some studio chatter both preceding and tailing it.

I'm really looking forward to the live tracks, because I like live recordings, from any band. Runaway for example. Al on lead and Brian on falsetto? Yes please!

Furthermore:

- WIBNTLA (duh!)
- Back Home (both versions)
- Do It Again (stereo mix)
- Slip On Through (acapella mix)
etc.
etc.

Ah heck, I want it all and I want it now :D

"Making their first official appearance," perhaps, but not "exclusive to this box set."

The collection is incomplete for a career retrospective.  When I get mine, I'm going to put
together my own 6 disc set of what my ideal "Made in California" box set would have included since it
is the 50th anniversary..  They need a catch-all, and this isn't it.

You and 95% of the rest of the board my friend.  I'm guessing this is the second thing that every diehard is going to do once they get this box into their hot little hands.  The first being making a backup safety copy of it in case the original discs happen to get scratched/eventually become prone to disc rot and the myriad of other things us obsessive compulsives worry about.  ;D

After I listen to the whole thing from start to finish I will finish my own personal take on Landlocked by adding Sound of Free and WIBNTLA.

Then maybe I will take all the goodies from Hawthorne, GV box, etc.. and make a Monster in California set.  :afro

I will definitely create a couple of new mixtapes (using newly released tracks off MiC) for people to get into their more 'artistic'/later stuff.

Carl's vocal is great and the "oh, oh, ohooo" on the second verse is Beach Boys at its finest.

Obviously the Dennis compositions are eagerly anticipated as well as demo for CalFeelin.

Why Do They Let Us Fall In Love? is also high on my list. Only a pity that River Deep - Mountain High didn't make the cut.

Ya know..something else that just occurred to me while looking at the box set tracklist...

Being that they're putting "Good Time" back into it's chronologically-correct place, I wonder if they're going to use the original (unreleased but heavily booted) Desper stereo mix of the track, vs. the later Love You one? My own uneducated guess would be "quite possibly" -- even though they don't specify it in the press-released tracklist. Thus, that *might* be one more exclusive track/mix to the set.

Or not.

Yer splittin' hairs, here. Listen to "California Feelin'" versus the original bootlegged version - night and day difference, in terms of sound quality. This kinda seems to come from the "But we already have that! I want something else!" mentality behind releases that include previously bootlegged material, which I can't get behind when the quality level is so drastically different.

You can't really blame the compilers for things that have been released on boots anyway, seems moot to me.

Probably because Brian's vocal was never completed, I'd wager. But for what's there, it's one of Brian's better vocals from the period. It just sucks that the leaked version was completely f***ed with...that's what you get when you convert lossless to mp3 to mp3 to mp3 to mp3 to mp3...and so on. It's a wonder you can hear ANYTHING under the digital noise.

I'd love to hear more of those tracks eventually; apparently Brian and Michael put down quite a few tracks at those sessions.

In reference to John's post, here are the songs that are exclusive to this box set:

Songs from the "Smile Sessions' are not exclusive to this set.  Neither are all the songs already on bootlegs.
"Making their first official appearance," perhaps, but not "exclusive to this box set."

Exactly. The Beach Boys didn't release these things before. These bootlegged things just went out there, regardless of what state they were in. So I think the group themselves, if they wanna release something, they should be allowed to, and should not have leaks held against them. I find that ridiculous.

I'd love to hear more of those tracks eventually; apparently Brian and Michael put down quite a few tracks at those sessions.

Right on man. My question is, what was the point of those sessions? They weren't "Beach Boys" sessions were they? Unlike say, something like "Stevie" which only may have been Brian and Dennis, but I'm pretty sure was logged as "The Beach Boys". Were they for Mike's solo album? I'm leaning towards that since the Looking Back With Love version of "Be My Baby" originates from those sessions.

Whatever this stuff was intended for, I really dig it too. I prefer their version of "Why Don't They Let Us Fall In Love" to The Ronettes' version, and "River Deep, Mountain High" rocks too. Shame maybe they couldn't have corralled that stuff together with stuff like "Stevie" and "Sweetie" and a few other things and gotten a decent early '80s album out.

Based on the iTunes listings, it will be longer then the released version. Guessing the beginning of the session and then the take (or takes.)

These were technically Brian/Michael sessions, recorded at Michael's WAVES home studio in Santa Barbara and produced by Brian. Be My Baby did form the basis for the Looking Back With Love version - outtakes of that version clearly feature Brian counting off on the track, and the keys are played by him as well. I don't think the July 1980 sessions were ever intended to be for the Looking Back With Love album, as those sessions never commenced until June of 1981. But they apparently did take the sessions quite seriously, as they put down at least a half-dozen tracks, some of which (Bucks and Children of the Night) Michael had recorded on his own as early as May of 1980.

My thoughts on the tracklisting...

Disc One: I think the songs on this disc are generally well chosen (a few like Our Car Club, Betsy etc. are debatable perhaps) and it is kind of an alternative Endless Summer. Any casual fans should enjoy this disc but the fact that Back Home is the only unreleased track means that is is something of a disappointment. It`s a real shame that other rare songs or early versions were not included for whatever reason.

Disc Two: The music on this disc is mostly genius (though Then I Kissed Her should definitely be included ahead of Salt Lake City) but the problem for the compilers is obviously that the Pet Sounds and Smile sets had drained the well dry. One or two unreleased songs from Party wouldn`t have gone amiss.

Disc Three: This disc has a few more rarities with the early version of Meant for You highly anticipated and Sound of Free an excellent inclusion. I can`t help but feel greedy for more though. There are so many alternate versions from this era (eg. Big Sur) and it`s a shame a few more didn`t make the cut.

Disc Four: I think the selections on this disc are a little more debatable. The alternate mixes for Rock and Roll Music and It`s OK are very welcome, it`s good to have a genuinely unreleased song in Goin to the Beach and It`s a Beautiful Day is a well chosen rarity. And Wouldn`t it be Nice to Live Again is the standout of course. Don`t Go Near the Water is an odd choice as an opener though and Brian`s Back is a bizarre inclusion. To not have any 15 Big Ones outtakes, Adult Child songs, Carry Me Home, The 45 mix of Cuddle Up etc. is a disappointment to me.

Disc Five: I strongly feel that this should have been all live recordings. It wouldn`t have been difficult to cut ten songs from the previous discs and having an entire CD of live stuff would have been much more coherent. The fact that there is a gap between 1975 and 1993 is also a major oversight. Soul Searchin` and You`re Still a Mystery are great inclusions but I think rare things like the single mix of Somewhere Near Japan and Rock and Roll to the Rescue would have added value for the completists.

Disc Six: This is obviously by far the most interesting disc and has an impressive lot of unbooted stuff. I wish they hadn`t included the Smile backing vocals or the Good Vibrations sections but other than that this is faultless.

I think Adam said that Bucks was the most impressive of these tunes so a shame it didn`t make the cut.

I think the good quality tracks you've highlighted as not being included point to the fact that there's more than sufficient material for another package of this nature in the future, as long as this one sells well.  We know there're even at least a couple or three TSS omissions to make it tastier to a wider audience.

I disagree completely.  "Salt Lake City" is an outstanding production and a great rock and roll song; it's one of the best tracks on Summer Days (and Summer Nights!!), even if the lyrics aren't the best.  "Then I Kissed Her," on the other hand, in spite of the change in lyrics, is one of the few Beach Boys cover songs from this time period that I don't feel Brian sufficiently made his own.  I prefer Spector's original, honestly.

Irrespective of quality, Then I Kissed Her was a number 4 hit. It is one of the group`s signature tunes in the U.K. so should be on a career retrospective.

Piano is louder in the intro and fade. Makes it a lot less prone to noisy static on vinyl.

If it's a contest between the two, I'd go for SLC every time. It's a terrific track, one that the SoT set really opened up my ears to. The backing track rocks, and the fade is classic Brian, one of the best he's done.  And those backing vocals…

Then I Kissed her surpasses the original in my opinion, and for my partner and me it's actually "our song".  But it ain't an original and doesn't really say as much about Brian's artistic development and progression as SLC.

SLC is also such a feel good, burst-out-of-the-sunshine blast of joy – it's Fun Fun Fun Central for the teen generation – while TIKH's mood is so… end of childhood, let's take on some responsibility and tether ourselves to each other for better-or-worse-probably-worse-end-of-innocence-etc.

Ah, I forgot that it was a hit in the UK.  I still think "Salt Lake City" is a superior song, but it makes a bit more sense that people would want to see "Then I Kissed Her" on MiC now.

True… an I'm among those who wish the hits had all been presented in alternative forms, especially given the fact that this set comes on the heels of last year's 50BOs and GHs releases. Though that's a minor gripe and I'm delighted with what we're getting regardless.

Hate to bother but is Back Home (1970) the same as the bootleg or are there differences?

Interesting. In that interview, Mike's description of the song sounding like "Takin' Care of Business" makes me thing he's talking about the title track to KTSA rather than "Goin' to the Beach."

It's weird. Even if the "composing session" footage of "Goin' to the Beach" in the "Going Platinum" TV special is like semi-staged or something, the interviews seem to indicate Mike wrote the song or at least co-wrote it.

This new article makes it sound like only Carl and Bachman wrote the song, but perhaps Mike's name is on there too?

Then there was a comment I vaguely recall from someone who had presumably seen the liner notes indicating that the song was credited solely to Mike, which was interesting in light of the fact that some fans thought over the years it was likely a Brian/Mike co-write!

I'm pretty sure Mike was mis-quoted.

No, we've just been misreading it.
The quote goes: "The title track was written by the late Carl Wilson along with Randy Bachman..."
The title track being "Keepin' the Summer Alive."

Indeed. This interview is elsewhere on the board at the moment and Mike was indeed talking about the song Keepin the Summer Alive.

Really guys, might as well just listen to the clip and hear Mike Love quoting exactly the name of the song (that is indeed Keepin' The Summer Alive) to make it clear, that simple.

I'm interested in hearing  the unearthed 1974 era Dennis tracks. What does his voice sound like? We're all so interested in hearing Brian's voice on the 1974 demo of California Feeling that Dennis seems to have been ignored. The tracks on the upcoming MIC set might be essential in documenting the changing of Dennis's voice.

It's to bad that the early version of River Song wasn't included, even if it wasn't meant to be a Beach Boys release. You can kind of hear some roughness in the voice already.

Along those lines, I'm really hoping that we get detailed (i.e. fairly exact where it exists) recording date annotations with the new set. That prospect's almost as exciting to me as the music within. This will go a long way in helping to decipher the tracks whose recording spanned several years...or even several eras. Bellagio, earlier boxes and the new concert book have already been great in that regard, but there's probably still even more exact and specific session info to be unveiled for many of the tracks that we've been anxiously wondering about for years.

"Where Is She":  I hope you all have clean floors, 'cause your jaws will be spending a lot of time there.   ;)

 :woot

From what you've and others have said, I'm expecting this to be a pretty nifty piece of songwriting to say the least! In terms of production, how decent does it sound? A few years back, a version of it was described as a bit rough, not something you could mistake for an album worthy track. Does this stand true today?

Isn't "Where Is She?" one of the songs that Bruce described as a number 1 hit, but only in Brian's house?

"Where is She?" could be one of the ones he was referring to. That being said, I've always associated that Bruce description with "Just an Imitation". Supposedly "Pet Sounds good", supposedly lost forever.

Perhaps I confused the two. Sometimes I wonder if Brian doesn't have songs like that "stored" somewhere in his memory. Take My Solution, for example. It was first recorded in 1970(I think?). A full ten years later, Brian randomly records a new instrumental version of it. I mean, how does stuff like that happen? Does he just randomly wake up one morning with it in his head after abandoning it years earlier? Same with Back Home being about 95% complete as far back as 1963, but not being released until 1976.

Brian has an exceptional memory. I'm sure he has every song he's ever written on quick recall.

That right there is probably the most annoying and downright maddening part of the Brian Wilson saga. He has seemingly often made a conscious effort to "forget" things, mostly during the time that his more destructive side came out. Or perhaps it was more of an effort to just "shut down" on the whole, and escape through drugs and unwillingness to be productive.

Brian has always been keen at recycling an older riff into a newer composition.

Land Ahoy > Cherry, Cherry Coupe
County Fair > I Do
Car Crazy Cutie > Pamela Jean
Thinkin' 'Bout You Baby > Darlin'
All Dressed Up For School > I Just Got My Pay > Marcella
Sandy > Sherry She Needs Me > She Says That She Needs Me
Heroes and Villains > Wonderful (Smiley)
Child is Father of the Man > Little Bird > Surf's Up
Wind Chimes > Can't Wait Too Long
I Love To Say Da Da > Cool Cool Water
Mrs. O'Leary's Cow > Fall Breaks and Back to Winter > Walk On By > Rio Grande
Do You Like Worms > Whistle In
Vega-Tables > Mama Says
Sail Plane Song > Loop De Loop
My Solution > Happy Days
Spark in the Dark > Chain Reaction of Love
Better Get Back In Bed > Lazy Lizzie
Clangin' > Morning Beat
Shortenin' Bread > Clangin' > Running Bear > Too Much Sugar > Fantasy Is Reality > Proud Mary > South American
They're Marching Along > Little Children
Little Girl > Sunshine
Sweetie > Love Ya
Black Widow > Let's Do It Again
Wondering What You're Up To Now > California Role
Turning Point > You've Touched Me
Christine > Barbie
Let's Stick Together > The Waltz
Market Place > Message Man

At this rate he's made a career off of recycling. And for good reason - if it's a good riff, he remembers it.

Brian's memory is something else for sure........ he remembers some things extremely well, while other things, he forgets or chooses to forget....

I remember seeing somewhere someone asking him about does he remember doing 'guess im dumb'...... and he straight out said 'No'..... without thinking...

go figure..??.....

Well...he didn't write Walk On By, so the connection is moot from that standpoint anyway. But I think the part being referenced is right after "I break down and cry" - and the vocals and piano do a similar "Fire" progression. Sounds more like a coincidence to me.

Car Crazy Cutie > Pamela Jean

I'm pretty sure Pamela Jean was actually recorded before Car Crazy Cutie, although it was released after. Pamela Jean was a demo, really, just Brian, Norberg, and third singer, and then when it was decided to make an all-car-themed album, the song was given new car lyrics by Roger Christian. Then, a few months later, Brian decided, somewhat whimsically, to release the original demo as "the Survivors." At least that's the best I've been able to piece together the chronology.

Out in the Country > A Day in the Life of a Tree

These do sound similar with the organ part, but I think "Tree" came first.  I could be wrong.
This thread seems to have been derailed as we're no longer talking about MiC Tracks, but any tracks that evolved into other tracks.  An interesting idea for it's own thread, imo.

So on Facebook, the BBs team revealed a quote in the upcoming booklet:

"Dennis had a great, generous heart. He grew into a man, and he actually gave more than he took. You know, he was a giver: he'd take the shirt off his back" - Al Jardine

What they failed to mention, however, was the subsequent quote from Brian.

"Yeah, including giving it to most of our wives." - Brian Wilson

I certainly hope the rest of the book isn't generic quotes like:

"Brian has an incredible ability to hear all the different parts. That's always amazed me" - Mike

"Most people don't know this, but Mike has a really lovely baritone." - Bruce

"Brian Wilson was my basebacll coach and I was the fourth Wilson." - David

"There's a lot of love in our music." - Brian
