Title: Don't Run Away instrumental on Priess tape
Post by: CenturyDeprived on August 04, 2013, 08:11:59 PM
There's a track (labelled as "I Don't Know" for some reason in iTunes) on the Priess tape, which is the Don't Run Away instrumental track. So beautiful, IMO one of the lost classics on par with "Guess I'm Dumb" that should have been recorded/released as a BB track.

I'm just wondering how it wound up on there, and where the source came from... seeing as it's not really a BB track (really close, though). I wonder if the Beach Boys were ever planning to record their own version of the song at some point, and the instrumental version was on a reel that they were toying around with for that reason?

I have never seen or heard any proof that the Beach Boys were planning to make their own recording of Don't Run Away; the backing track on The Preiss Tape is the Bruce & Terry version.

As that compilation dates from the late 1970s, it's all over the place. There are a few gems on there. Some of the Adult/Child tracks on the disc are either different vocal takes or have the count-ins intact. The Smile tracks are booted elsewhere. The "Mike Love promo" is a fake, obviously. I'd certainly love to see the Adult/Child alternates booted in better quality.
