Title: California feelin'
Post by: matt-zeus on April 27, 2006, 06:19:42 AM
I managed to hear a few rarities recently and  the Rocky Pamplin version of CF rocks! Much better than the BB version, not as plodding and Rockys voice had the swagger that is lacking on Carls version.
Not sure if anyones gonna agree with me on this.
On an opposite note the song 'Can't stop talking about American Girls' by Mike Love has the worst vocal on any record ever, did they not let him hear the backing track whilst it was being recorded.

Correct me if I'm wrong here, but isn't that just the backing/harmony line from Mike ? Accepted, it's not very harmonious (actually, it's bloody awful) but taken into context ...

How'd ya mean? All sounds like Mike, to me.

That recording is hideous.

There was a thread on this a while back and the concensus was that the vocal was recorded in a different key as the backing track, though why anyone would choose to sync them up this way is a mystery to me.  :o

Has anyone heard the 1974 vocal and piano demo of "California Feeling" by Brian?  How does that one rate?

More than a mystery, if true (and it would explain how dreadful that thing sounds), it's a fuckin stupid thing to do.
Let's never speak of this again.

Sorry mate but even being open minded on this one, it sucks the big one. Mr Pamplin has a voice for scaring small children not singing, even in the different key it all goes disasterously wrong in the orange grove section and the whole vocal is flatter than holland. I blame Marilyn myself :P

I saw the testimony of someone who heard it at Susan Lang's convention back in 2003; he said, basically, that it was a lost gem, amazing, must be released, yada yada yada.

Brian plays a gospel piano on this one, I read.

Unforunately, yes, such a song does exist in this universe.  Fortunately though, I've never been forced to listen to it.  I think with a title like that, the actual song can't help but be a dissapointment.
Some things are best left to the imagination.

According to AGDs book, the Rocky Pamplin version is the American Spring version.
