Title: Live Japan - Jan 1966 youtube
Post by: If Mars had life on it... on July 16, 2013, 01:32:39 AM

For those (like me) that have never heard this before.  Can anyone tell me who's doing the falsetto on these?  I know Bruce is supposed to have covered Brian's parts but the high leads sound more like Carl or Al to me.  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S0FVgRs9IJo (ftp://https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S0FVgRs9IJo)

I say Al - I can hear Bruce in the middle of the stack during Surfer Girl.

I think.

The falsettos were shared. Mostly Al, but Bruce on "I get around", "Fun fun fun" and some other parts

Funnily enough, I was just listening to this very sh ow the other night and trying to figure out who was doing the high part during the end of Fun Fun Fun. I don't think it's Bruce.

I didnt watch the clip but if it's 1996, it's probably Matt Jardine.

It isn't 1996, it's 1966. There are a couple of audience recordings from that year and on all I have heard the band sounds much better than on the professional recorded Michigan shows. But of course you can't really compare them because of the difference in soundquality.

The unfortunate thing about the Michigan shows is they were near the very beginning of a tour (second & third dates after a 20-day layoff).  The Japan, Denmark, France, and England shows that ciruclate from '66 were all either performed after they'd had the chance to "warm up" a bit on the road, or after a much shorter break.  Pity they didn't record one of the Euro shows for release.

An entirely proportionate response to someone misreading a 6 as a 9.

Playing Little Honda in the key of C and Barbara Ann in E sure made those songs drag.

I'm not stupid, just ignorant.  But I think I had that coming to me, I'll take it.

Thanks so much for the link! This may turn out to be my favorite Beach Boys live "album".  The lo-fi energy is just remarkable.
