Carl's vocal performance on This Whole World is hands down better than any and everything he's ever recorded with the BB's. (And for once his soulful singing doesn't seem/sound forced.)
Those very last seconds of that song *sigh*  :love (mmm mmmmmmmm) Come to think of it Sunflower wasn't that bad of an album.

What do you mean by "soulful"? Aren't 'I Can Hear Music', 'Darlin', 'I Was Made To Love Her', 'Girl Don't Tell Me' for example, soulful? Do you think those leads are forced?

They all sound terribly forced. His "soulful" singing doesn't seem genuine at all and to be honest it's not even decent enough to be categorized as blue eyed soul.

I'll grant you that I Was Made To Love Her might sound a bit forced, but none of the others sound that way at all. Amazing what different ears pick up. I don't think blue-eyed soul was what he was aiming for, so yeah, I wouldn't categorize as that either.

Pre Hall & Oates, blue-eyed soul was The Righteous Brothers. Carl was aiming more at just good ol' R&B.

Using Pet Sounds as the line in the sand, I assume that album itself is off the table.  And since no one chose "Good Vibrations" in either category, I assume that's considered part of the "Pet Sounds era".  Using those guidelines, here's mine:

Ignore the doubters - I love these kind of threads! If it were up to me every thread would be lists.

Pre-PS

1. The Little Girl I Once Knew
2. She Knows Me Too Well (How was this left off of MIC??)
3. Don't Worry Baby

Post-PS

1. Feel Flows
2. Lady (original single version - swoon!)
3. Where I Belong (yeah, you heard me - f*** all y'all!)

4. All I Wanna Do

I'm not going to declare either pre- or post- as superior/inferior as my opinion varies depending on my mood.

I'm with those who like these list-threads. Though this one is one tough choice...

Ante:
- I Get Around (the most rocking song of 1964, hands down!)
- Good to My Baby (in my humble opinion, it's one of the best BBs songs, sp underrated even by hardcore fans)
- Help Me, Rhonda (no wonder it got to #1. Because of Al's terrific singing!)

Post:
- At My Window
- I Wanna Pick You Up
- Pitter Patter

50/50, because I like every one of those chapters in the BBs' career.

Honorable mentions: Surfin' USA, Take a Load off Your Feet, Salt Lake City, 10 Little Indians, Never Learn Not to Love, I Went to Sleep, Lady Lynda & In the Back of My Mind.

Are you a troll or just actually that much of a Mike-ista? Not that it's a problem if you are the latter (I've got no problem with Mike myself), it's just rather surprising to see someone that devoted to Mike rather than Brian or the band as a whole.

Too tough for me.  The problem with this thread is that pre-Pet Sounds is four to five years of music, post-Smile is about forty years (give or take a decade or two worth of hiatuses).  Unless post-Smile means after its official release in 2004, which would make it a lot easier.  ;)

I would consider myself more of a fan of the whole band with a slight bias towards Brian, but I certainly can appreciate all of the great contributions Mike has made to the band over the years and am sure he's a great guy. And the songs he sang lead on couldn't have been sang better by any other members or non-members of the band. :)
After Carl passed away, for years I was a "No Wilson's, no Beach Boys" type of fan. Took me 9 years until I finally went to a Mike & Bruce show. Finally, I realized that they are as much a business as they are artists. I figure if they (BRI) are OK with it, then why shouldn't I be too. Though, through all that has transpired over past 14 plus years, I am a Beach Boys fan, first and foremost.

Don't Worry Baby
In My Room
Surfer Girl

For me, those three symbolize the youth, innocence and the beautiful melancholy of Brian's early works. All of them sung by him in his soaring falsetto and with killer intros.

'Til I Die
Busy Doing Nothing
Time To Get Alone

1. Surfer Girl
2. Don't Worry Baby
3. Please Let Me Wonder

vs.

1. 'Til I Die
2. Darlin'
3. Slip On Through

I'd go with the first three, barely.

I am astounded that people pick songs from TWGMTR amongst their 3 top post-Smile songs. Of all the music they recorded after Smile those were far from the most likely songs to make that list  :)

It is the one that`s freshest in the memory. Ask people in a few years and it may not figure so well.

My picks:

1, Kiss Me Baby
2, I Get Around
3, All Summer Long

1, This Whole World
2, All I Wanna Do
3, All This is That

That's just, like, your opinion, man. ;)

Personally, I think PCH is one of the best Beach Boys songs period - not because it's "fresh", but because it embodies everything I love in a song: the composition, vocals, lyrics, instrumentals are all beautiful and well done.

American, actually...did a couple years of college radio; Went to college (or "Uni" as some of the Brits like to say) for radio/mass communication, but not exactly working in that field right now. I just like making stupid posts sometimes.
