I think the earlier set wins, barely.

Carl's vocal performance on This Whole World is hands down better than any and everything he's ever recorded with the BB's. (And for once his soulful singing doesn't seem/sound forced.)
Those very last seconds of that song *sigh*  :love (mmm mmmmmmmm) Come to think of it Sunflower wasn't that bad of an album.

What do you mean by "soulful"? Aren't 'I Can Hear Music', 'Darlin', 'I Was Made To Love Her', 'Girl Don't Tell Me' for example, soulful? Do you think those leads are forced?

They all sound terribly forced. His "soulful" singing doesn't seem genuine at all and to be honest it's not even decent enough to be categorized as blue eyed soul.

I'll grant you that I Was Made To Love Her might sound a bit forced, but none of the others sound that way at all. Amazing what different ears pick up. I don't think blue-eyed soul was what he was aiming for, so yeah, I wouldn't categorize as that either.

What was sound he was aiming for? It sounds very much like a pathetic attempt at blue eyed soul. (no offense)

Pre Hall & Oates, blue-eyed soul was The Righteous Brothers. Carl was aiming more at just good ol' R&B.

Using Pet Sounds as the line in the sand, I assume that album itself is off the table.  And since no one chose "Good Vibrations" in either category, I assume that's considered part of the "Pet Sounds era".  Using those guidelines, here's mine:

Impossible to decide from a purely musical point of view. I tend to find the post-Smile era a tiny bit more interesting in some ways.

I'm with those who like these list-threads. Though this one is one tough choice...

1) California Girls - Written and sung by Mike, great record.
2) Surfin USA - Mike made the group internationally famous and loved by the world.
3) Fun Fun Fun - Mike's lyrics flow like butter.

1) Kokomo -Mike's seminal masterpiece. Unparalleled.
2) Goin' to The Beach - I had to sell a large portion of my belongings to get this from a certain insider back in the day. Never regretted it even for a second. Micheal is the greatest!!
3) Do It Again - Mike saved the Beach Boys with this one.

Too tough for me.  The problem with this thread is that pre-Pet Sounds is four to five years of music, post-Smile is about forty years (give or take a decade or two worth of hiatuses).  Unless post-Smile means after its official release in 2004, which would make it a lot easier.  ;)

After Carl passed away, for years I was a "No Wilson's, no Beach Boys" type of fan. Took me 9 years until I finally went to a Mike & Bruce show. Finally, I realized that they are as much a business as they are artists. I figure if they (BRI) are OK with it, then why shouldn't I be too. Though, through all that has transpired over past 14 plus years, I am a Beach Boys fan, first and foremost.

I am astounded that people pick songs from TWGMTR amongst their 3 top post-Smile songs. Of all the music they recorded after Smile those were far from the most likely songs to make that list  :)

It is the one that`s freshest in the memory. Ask people in a few years and it may not figure so well.

Personally, I think PCH is one of the best Beach Boys songs period - not because it's "fresh", but because it embodies everything I love in a song: the composition, vocals, lyrics, instrumentals are all beautiful and well done.
