Title: Paul Mertens on what to expect from upcoming BAD shows
Post by: baseball95 on July 11, 2013, 07:14:55 AM
http://www.brianwilson.com/tour/

"The shows are featuring all the hits that fans, both casual and serious, would expect, but we're also delving into some rare cuts as well, adding some songs that have rarely, if ever, been performed live.

We also have the opportunity to highlight Al and David's contribution to the Beach Boys music, particularly Al's vocal power and David's seminal surf guitar style.

Having had an extended break, Brian and the band are really stoked to get out and play!"

"rarely, if ever, been performed live" SONGS !!!!!!!!

Just play the whole damn Wild Honey album and throw in a coupla hits.

Or Sunflower.

Or Love You.

Or Brian Wilson '88.

And have Brian sing Lonely Sea and Farmer's Daughter.

And put Taylor Mills up front dead center with a spotlight on her the whole time........

Well, I have been going to Brian's shows since 1999, and I have yet to hear anything from Love You. Kind of strange Brian not performing songs from his sometimes favorite album, wouldn't you say? Plus, we know that Jeff doesn't like it.

I think "Honkin' Down the Highway" would make a lot of sense, given Al and Brian did it together on Al's very recent solo album.

I laughed out loud over the Mike tribute screen. We should go full hologram sequence.

I would definitely love some Love You stuff. Let's hear the weird ones. Solar System or Johnny Carson. It would be great if he could do a whole concert of it Pet Sounds style. But that's just the BB nerd in me speaking. Probably won't happen.

So if they are going for stuff they've never played or have rarely played...well hmmm....here's a few choices (which I think are at least somewhat reasonable:

"Lonely Sea": early ballad that BW hasn't done, might be a nice choice
"Vega-tables": Al lead vocal, I don't think BW and band have done this one outside of the SMiLE tours
"I Went To Sleep": just a random '60s choice that BW and band have never done
"Break Away": has prominent Brian and Al on the original song
"Take A Load Off Your Feet": an Al song, quite quirky, Brian might be cool with it
"You Need A Mess Of Help To Stand Alone": I think this would fit a Brian vocal perfectly these days
"Good Timin'": prominently featured Brian and Al on C50, where it was rarely played
"Island Girl": sorry to say it guys, but I could see Al throwin' this one out there if they want a song of his and Brian being cool with it
"From There To Back Again": I'd assume the BW group knows how well this song has been received, and since Al's there....

I think Al and Brian did "Break Away" on some of their 2006/2007 shows, but I can't recall for sure.

I'm hoping they get Al to do some of his own Al-centric deep cuts, like "Lookin' at Tomorrow" or "Santa Ana Winds." I remember when Al had to cancel doing one of those Pop festivals some years back and he said he had planned on doing stuff like "Lady Lynda." That one would be interesting to hear. I recall someone catching a circa 2000 Brian soundcheck and Brian started blurting out singing a line from "Lady Lynda" randomly, so it would be interesting if Brian actually has any affinity for the song. It's not even one of my favories, but the 1980 live versions were better than the studio versions.

Title: Re: Paul Mertens on what to expect from upcoming BAD shows
Post by: Rocky Raccoon on July 11, 2013, 11:50:11 PM
I don't think Al would agree to Lady Lynda, a very direct ode to his ex-wife.  That would be awkward.

I really wanted them to do Lady Lynda last year. My pick's would be Honkin' Down The Highway, Lady Lynda, You Need A Mess Of Help To Stand Alone, Goin' On, Meet Me In My Dreams Tonight, and Ride(Wondermints cover).  8)

I just hope that the "rare cuts" are songs from after 1965. Something from Sunflower, Friends, Wild Honey or Surf's Up and not just a few lesser known surf or car songs. The 1962-1965 material is already enormously overrepresented in all the Beach Boys (related) shows, IMO.

These would be such great choices! Especially the last 2. Plus, like au bord de ma chere already mentioned, it'd be jolly cool to hear Al taking the lead on Farmer's Daughter. I can totally imagine it being sung in a lower key.

Brian has performed "Lonely Sea." But IIRC only a couple of times, and in England (and it was mainly Foskett).

He also did Breakaway quite a bit in the mid-2000s, both solo and with Al (it never quite gelled, either, although the versions with Al were far preferable).

Absolutely -- I saw them do that setlist (and You're Welcome) in Manchester that year, and it was the best show I've ever seen. The June 2002 tour was the peak of Brian's touring career, and the sets have gone downhill since (except when they did the full album tours of Smile and That Lucky Old Sun, obviously).

I think with that, the whole 'It was all Jeff!' schtick was down to what side of the room you were on? The footage of it I've seen was shot on the other side of the RFH from me, and that is mostly Jeff. However, I could hear BW clearly when I saw it, from the other side of the room. Maybe it was shot on a different night, mind.

There may be some truth to that, both times I saw BW and he played that song I was off to the left and heard Brian pretty clearly. When I watched videos I was surprised by how much Jeff there was in comparison. Might be just one of those things you don't pay attention to live but sticks out on a YT video that does little to represent the genuine article.

That is an incredible setlist.  If the BAD shows had even half of that first set, I'd make the trip to Pittsburgh, no questions asked.  As it is, I'm holding out for something a little closer.

I would distinguish between setlists and performances, myself. The '04 shows (Smile as the second half) had adventuresome first sets too, but somewhat more focused on 60s material.

In terms of good  live performances, though, Brian's '06 shows with Al were excellent. And his fall 2009 American tour was the best live work of his entire career (decent setlists there, too, with the Darian Darlin' making its debut). That was also the tour when he actually started playing piano live onstage again (well, for more than one or two songs). A watershed.

But that being said, you've had years (like 07) where both the BW setlists and performances were so-so. Brian was always a pro, but you can tell that he gets pretty bored with GH shows.

Recordings circulate of pretty much every post-99 live BW tour. There are a lot of soundboards of the PS shows, and the Smile shows were also well documented. Everything else at least has audience recordings of varying quality. Not really a live show collector here, but they have been spotted in the wilds of the web.

Don't worry, nobody's going to ban you. It wasn't a dangerous question. There's a big difference between "do" & "what". If you've asked "What bootlegs survived?", then yes, by law you'll have to be banned.

I didn't see either of those tours. In my experience there is a definite correlation between the amount of interesting material in the set and the quality of the performance, but I can believe that's not always the case.

Unfortunately, the June 2002 shows I've heard only circulate in fairly poor quality -- the Manchester one (the one I saw) has a couple of dropouts and is very quietly recorded. There are some very good quality recordings of the January 2002 shows, though (*slightly* shorter setlists -- no Wonderful, Cabinessence or The Night Was So Young, but otherwise near-identical).

Don't worry, nobody's going to ban you. It wasn't a dangerous question. There's a big difference between "do" & "what". If you've asked "What bootlegs survived?", then yes, by law you'll have to be banned.

That's nonsense. Nothing wrong with talking about boots or their contents here, as long as you're not trading links or downloads on the board itself.

Best BW setlists ever were from 2002 -- about three years into the regular touring.

Brian and I both. A hitless show would be ideal and refreshing. Well, maybe a couple of hits would be ok.

1. Do it Again
2. I'm Waiting for the Day
3. All I Wanna Do
4. Darlin'
5. I Get Around
6. Let Us Go On This Way
7. The Warmth of the Sun
8. Let Him Run Wild
9. Surfin' Safari
10. Aren't You Glad?
11. Kiss Me, Baby
12. Cool, Cool Water

13. Meant For You
14. California Girls
15. Wild Honey
16. Had to Phone Ya
17. The Girl from New York City
18. She Knows Me too Well
19. Goin' On
20. Please Let Me Wonder
21. Let the Wind Blow
22. Here Comes the Night
23. Fun, Fun, Fun
24. Good Vibrations

 ;)

I'm sad about the fact they're probably not coming to Europe. I bet it's going to be a BADass tour. :-\

Why exactly did they start playing more Greatest Hits like setlists during recent years?

Can't wait for the show in Ohio to see what they play!
I've had my tickets for months!
