Title: Tyrannosaurus Rex/T. Rex appreciation thread
Post by: Amazing Larry on July 08, 2013, 07:26:40 PM
I haven't heard many Smiley Smilers opinions on them, so I'm starting this thread. Not much else to say.
I'm on a major T. Rex kick and I need to vent.

Children Of The Revolution is so heavy, I could die - what a tune, completely perfect.

The glam singles are the greatest sh*t ever. I must admit I am not au fait with the earlier folky stuff, nor decline era rock and roll covering weirdness, but those singles in the early 70's alone ensure he is one of the greatest of all time. Bowie could never beat his glam.

Can I plug my cover of Ride A White Swan here. Cheeky, I know.

I actually almost prefer some of the acoustic stuff. Unicorn is one of my desert island discs.

I'll check it out! I've just got the 20th Century Boy box, but I need to give that sh*t a proper try.

Once you get used to Marc's bleaty voice, there's tons of unique melodies and hooks.

For me Unicorn and Beard of Stars were Marc's creative peak.

I heard Marc Bolan and his then musical companion Steve Peregrin Took on John Peel's Top Gear programme in 1968 and bought their debut album (My People Were Fair etc etc) as soon as it came out. My favourite tracks? "Child Star", "Chateau In Virginia Waters" and "Graceful Fat Sheba". Some of the electric stuff moves me ("Telegram Sam" for one), some doesn't...

T. Rex is definitely one of my Top 5 bands, mainly based on the acoustic stuff.

They're also a huge influence on my music: http://mount-moon.bandcamp.com/track/turtles-game
