Title: Announcing Beach Boys RSD 2013 Releases Post by: picassosson on June 16, 2013, 02:28:02 PM Announcing Beach Boys Record Store Day 2013 Limited Edition Releases
The Beach Boys are accompanying their career-spanning collection Made in California with a Record Store Day 2013 limited edition release of two "lost" albums and accompanying 7"s. Titled Reverberation and Landlocked, these two "lost" albums from 1970 have been long speculated about in collector's circles, but are largely unknown to the general public. Although not technically "lost", these collections were working titles for songs that were in the running for the seminal albums Sunflower and Surf's Up. Reverberation was a working title for the Beach Boys proposed final Capitol album, dated June 19th, 1970 - before the group decided to deliver Live In London instead. Landlocked was a working title for Surf's Up, and was originally a tape of tracks compiled by engineer Steve Desper that were in consideration for the Beach Boys second Reprise album. Although the original sequencing for these collections is uncertain, various track listings have surfaced over the years - with many of the proposed songs making it on to completed albums. This limited edition release does not attempt to duplicate those original sequences, but instead proposes an alternate 1970, where the Beach Boys released both a last Capitol album, and a new Reprise album in-between Sunflower and Surf's Up, duplicating none of the tracks on those celebrated releases. Also included are four unreleased 7" singles. Included among the tracks are speed corrected covers of "With a Little Help from My Friends" and "The Letter" recorded during the 1967 Wild Honey sessions and originally released on the out of print Rarities collection in 1983. "My Solution" is a never before released Halloween themed Brian Wilson curio from 1970, whose musical theme was later resurrected for his solo track "Happy Days" in 1998. Also included is Brian's charmingly bizarre health restaurant shout-out "H.E.L.P. Is On The Way", originally released on the 1993 Good Vibrations box. On the flip-side is an unreleased and unfinished slice-of-life Brian track "Walkin'". Rounding out the 45s is the unreleased Dennis Wilson gem "Carry Me Home", from the Holland sessions. Deemed "too dark" to be a Beach Boys track, this spine-tingling song has criminally never been released until now. On the flip side is the gospel inspired fragment "Out In The Country" an Al Jardine track also from the Holland sessions. 1967 through 1973 was a very fertile period for the Beach Boys, with all members of the band contributing mostly high quality, if not interesting work. The list of unreleased tracks worked on during this era was huge, many of which for space and sequencing issues were left off Made In California. All tracks are sourced from the original analog tapes, with accompanying period style artwork, and are strictly limited edition. Tracklistings: REVERBERATION LP 1. A Time To Live In Dreams 2. Break Away (Brian Lead) 3. Celebrate The News 4. Sail Plane Song 5. We're Together Again 6. Mona Kana 7. Cotton Fields (Stereo Single Version) 8. San Miguel 9. Can't Wait Too Long 10. It was fun to dream for that split second.... Title: Re: Announcing Beach Boys RSD 2013 Releases Post by: Eric Aniversario on June 16, 2013, 02:58:04 PM This is very well-crafted, if people had responded and went along with it, I probably would've gotten my hopes up big time.
Title: Re: Announcing Beach Boys RSD 2013 Releases Post by: Rocker on June 16, 2013, 03:12:36 PM I believed this for a second Me too until I read this sentence: Quote Reverberation was a working title for the Beach Boys proposed final Capitol album, dated June 19th, 1970 - before the group decided to deliver Live In London instead The group didn't know about the release of Live In London (they did however for the US release in'76) Well done, picassosson! :thumbsup Title: Re: Announcing Beach Boys RSD 2013 Releases Post by: picassosson on June 16, 2013, 03:14:08 PM I actually think this would be a pretty sensible route for releasing archival material that is "less palatable" by the general public. It's more substantial, less messy, and probably more lucrative than beachboyscentral.com downloads, and who really pays attention to limited edition vinyl releases except the people who really care? A classy, low-stakes way to give the fans what they want without potentially "marring" a high profile career-spanning box set...
Title: Re: Announcing Beach Boys RSD 2013 Releases Post by: RonBaker2003 on June 16, 2013, 04:15:30 PM Wow. I was all ready for these releases. I thought that finally Capitol did it right. Now my hopes are dashed. Thanks.

Title: Re: Announcing Beach Boys RSD 2013 Releases Post by: KokoNO on June 16, 2013, 08:04:42 PM This would have fooled a great many people had the thread actually been made before the recent Record Store Day.
That said, I immediately went into the next room to grab my wallet. :lol Title: Re: Announcing Beach Boys RSD 2013 Releases Post by: SummerInParadise23 on June 16, 2013, 08:22:47 PM Not sure the point of this post....I was tricked to until I Saw the first response. o well :)

Title: Re: Announcing Beach Boys RSD 2013 Releases Post by: Mikie on June 16, 2013, 09:31:14 PM This had me going for a second, then I thought, "Wait, they have Record Store Days in April - they're having another one?" Capitol's changing the "Good Vibrations" '70 album cover to Reverberation and the "Landlocked" cover looks so real!
This would have been a great April Fool's Day joke. I've seen some great artwork on this board, but this one really took some time! I'm kinda bumed it isn't for real! ;D Title: Re: Announcing Beach Boys RSD 2013 Releases Post by: Gertie J. on June 16, 2013, 09:36:31 PM Title: Re: Announcing Beach Boys RSD 2013 Releases Post by: Smilin Ed H on June 16, 2013, 11:02:43 PM We can dream...
Title: Re: Announcing Beach Boys RSD 2013 Releases Post by: Custom Machine on June 16, 2013, 11:13:16 PM Really nicely done, picassosson. This for sure is the kind of stuff that should see the light on a Record Store Day.
Title: Re: Announcing Beach Boys RSD 2013 Releases Post by: Jay on June 16, 2013, 11:21:08 PM I almost fainted when I saw "My Solution(without narration)". Damn you, picassosson. :lol
Title: Re: Announcing Beach Boys RSD 2013 Releases Post by: Ebb and Flow on June 17, 2013, 12:38:40 AM I don't get why we don't get mono pressings of the original albums, or replicas of original 45's etc for RSD. At my local record store I see so many copies of that Pee Chee style Surfin Safari 10" single that don't sell and collect dust. IMO stuff like this WOULD sell, especially with that sort of artwork.

Just because if you haven't, it's interesting, that's all. Title: Re: Announcing Beach Boys RSD 2013 Releases Post by: Micha on June 17, 2013, 12:59:14 AM Me three. :P Damnit. You're all fooling, right? They were OBVIOUSLY not real I had already pictured myself at the record store asking for that stuff. I'm so in love with the collection of songs usually referred to as "Landlocked" that I believed this instantly. Didn't pay that much attention to what was written in the fake press release nor was I aware when Record Store Day was... Good choice for the My Solution Cover with the mask on... Title: Re: Announcing Beach Boys RSD 2013 Releases Post by: Gabo on June 17, 2013, 01:14:39 AM Both of those albums would have been amazing...
Title: Re: Announcing Beach Boys RSD 2013 Releases Post by: MBE on June 17, 2013, 01:20:32 AM I've had dreams about records like these. What I wouldn't pay for them!
Title: Re: Announcing Beach Boys RSD 2013 Releases Post by: buddhahat on June 17, 2013, 05:37:12 AM Well I fell for it! Maybe because a release of Landlocked has struck me as a perfect idea for along time.
With the release of Smile in 2011, the BB's are arguably THE lost album band. Why not follow up with more classic lost albums as per the OP? The start of a Dylan style bootleg series. Seems like a no brainer to me. Start off with the strongest outtake period (arguably 20/20 & sunflower sessions), then move on to Adult Child then .. well maybe diminishing returns from that point onwards but you could add two or three albums to the canon that would arguably hold their own against much of the official stuff. Whether it's commercially viable is a different question but it would certainly be a hip and reasonably innovative thing to do. Neil Young is potentially about to do this with Homegrown, Chrome Dreams etc., so not sure what's stopping the BBs cashing in more creatively on their back catalogue, rather than the hodge podge archival releases that we get (great though they are). Title: Re: Announcing Beach Boys RSD 2013 Releases Post by: chris.metcalfe on June 17, 2013, 05:45:35 AM Bastard. :-D
I was about to place most of my possessions on ebay to pay for them. Title: Re: Announcing Beach Boys RSD 2013 Releases Post by: Freddie French-Pounce on June 17, 2013, 06:12:29 AM i got so excited for a second, but read the first reply after the first line.

Title: Re: Announcing Beach Boys RSD 2013 Releases Post by: Mark H on June 17, 2013, 10:21:24 AM Amazing work picassosson! ;D
If only you were in charge of Capitol's Beach Boys Reissues :-D The covers are amazing, any chance of posting the reverberation and landlocked ones larger/on their own/without vinyl? I only ask as they would look sweet as iTunes cover art for playlists :) Title: Re: Announcing Beach Boys RSD 2013 Releases Post by: Micha on June 17, 2013, 12:33:00 PM I must say, I haven't had this much fun being had in A LONG TIME! :) Me too! (Or is it "me neither"?) Title: Re: Announcing Beach Boys RSD 2013 Releases Post by: MBE on June 17, 2013, 06:17:42 PM This is the ultimate lost album band and I think all should eventually come out in some form. Vinyl especially!
Title: Re: Announcing Beach Boys RSD 2013 Releases Post by: Mahalo on June 17, 2013, 06:20:18 PM picassosson that was incredible. Truly. I hope someone in the Capitol towers see this. Everyone on here nearly got a woody when seeing what could be an amazing BB release.... I love the album art too. Great job!
Title: Re: Announcing Beach Boys RSD 2013 Releases Post by: Micha on June 18, 2013, 02:13:18 AM picassosson that was incredible. I disagree! It was absolutely credible! As a compromise, I offer you "It was incredibly credible". ;D Title: Re: Announcing Beach Boys RSD 2013 Releases Post by: chris.metcalfe on June 18, 2013, 01:18:12 PM By the way, this looks like the way to do a vinyl reissue (this one's for real):
