Title: Fantasy future rarities releases.
Post by: Mike's Beard on June 13, 2013, 11:27:45 PM
OK we now know what vault material is going to be included on MIC (and what isn't) so I thought it would be cool to discuss
1; what unreleashed songs we'd like to have have on any future projects and,
2; the probability of what the band want to/can put out down the line.

A couple of the top of my head;

Michael Row the Boat Ashore. A really great track which I'd love to hear in proper clarity as the version I don't own suffers from a very wobbly sound which tends to fade in and out throughout.

Viggie. I'm rather suprised this still hasn't crept out. A Mike track from when he was still writing at a very high level. As it's about Mike's at the time girlfriend I wonder if he has similar feelings to the track as Al does towards Lady Lynda these days?

If Mike didn't want songs that he'd written about ex-girlfriends released then he would probably veto about 1000.  :lol

When the guys are all dead we will probably get a lot more rarities. After all, if Carl were still alive then Soulful Old Man Sunshine might still be unreleased.

Oh, I can't wait for that! >:D

OK, that was mean and untrue.

Only one from my wishlist (not counting WIBNTLA) made it to the new box, that being the live "Wild Honey".  I'm a big fan of 20/20 - In Concert but at this point think it's highly doubtful I'll get quality versions of stuff featuring Blondie and Ricky.  Still at the top of my wishlist are three featuring them"  "Hard Times", "We Got Love", and "It's A New Day".  Another song I'd LOVE to have in great condition is Billy's reading of "Honkin' Down The Highway".  I don't know what it is but his vocal honestly makes that song for me.  I never liked it from Al.  It just sounded to "gosh darn" hokey.  I sought out Billy's version as a neat oddity and couldn't believe the difference it made to me.  Obviously, I think there's even less of a chance we'll ever see that one escape the vaults.

As for stuff from the actual Beach Boys (no offense to Blondie & Ricky), these are but a few I crave:

Big Sur (original)
Jumpin' Jack Flash (live)
In The Back Of My Mind (70's version)
Chasing The Sky
Party outtakes
I Write The Songs (live) - It's a huge song from the Beach Boys' pen and should be celebrated
Here Comes The Night (1979 single edit)
River Song (live)
The 1974(?) Dick Clark New Year's performance
the entire Carnegie Hall Show(s)

...and Adult/Child

More unreleased stuff would be great, but what The Beach Boys need first and foremost is a 'Past Masters' CD set that collects every song they ever released that wasn't on any of the regular albums.

Say you're a completist who wants to own every song that The Beach Boys ever released. And say that you're old school and you prefer hardcopy discs over downloads. Than it's just insane how many different items you have to get besides the regular albums to complete your collection. And to make it worse: most of those items are long out of print. I'm pretty sure that there aren't a lot of artists (if any) who have a more messy odds & ends list than The Beach Boys.

Still a little surprised that there's been no Legacy (or similar) edition of Sunflower, given the number of available outtakes, alt versions and different mixes etc.  MAybe that's sommat else to look forward to ( and maybe this belongs in the fantasy tracklist thread…

There's really not a lot more out there I'd want out now. Original Big Sur and the remaining Adult Child tracks are probably the ones I'd really want as well as anything Sunflower that hasn't come out (I'm Going Your Way for example.)

I never want to say never, but other than the stuff listed above, beyond maybe more solo Dennis stuff and possibly the Wilson/Usher 1986-87 stuff...I don't see much more left that would be viable. And even this stuff listed above probably doesn't have much of a shot.

I still hope to see the complete 'Life Suite' released, but these tracks would probably be considered "unfinished," as opposed to "unreleased," and would therefore fall outside of the scope of the discussion, for now.

Umm, I'd like to see a soundboard "Surf's Up" from the early 70s (and if any of these performances were multi-tracked, then, hey, all the better).

I'd really like to see how far the band got with "Oh, Lord" back during the '85 sessions.  Brian's earlier work with the song on the demo holds so much promise.  Am I correct that the version recorded in 1984 was instrumental only, or is there any info regarding vocal attempts being made?  I checked Bellagio, and what I read said ""Oh Lord" was reportedly attempted."  Has anything else been learned since this?

There are others, certainly, including any Smile material mixed by Brian in 1966/67, but these were the first to pop in my head.

Not to derail the thread, but just for fun , if we're to take the topic a step further, into the realm of "oh, so close" fantasy releases, then give me "Surf's Up" (Brian), featuring a newly discovered Part II, and a true stereo mix for "Good Vibrations."

Good thread! I'd love to see "On Broadway," "Go and Get That Girl," any unreleased DW stuff, and "Wild Honey" live with Carl on lead get released, also the BB part of the '70s Beachago show that's already had the Chicago part released.

Viggie is one of the best songs Mike ever wrote. To me it is a tragedy that his two greatest solo compositions - Viggie and Grow Crescent Glow - remain in the vaults.

In fact, I'm very surprised that Mike is not represented more strongly on the later CDs on the box, and I say this as someone who isn't a huge Mike fan. I was certain All I Wanna Do would make it onto the box, likewise Big Sur. It's honestly made me re-evaluate the bloke. Guess he ain't pulling strings behind the scenes as much as we'd thought... Either that or he's just incredibly relaxed about some of his best work going unheard.

True there is plenty more stuff out there but I get the gut feeling that we may have hit the wall on what the band are willing to put out in the future. My dream future release would be a 70s/80s equivalent of the Hawthorne CA cd.

Stuff that is never going to see the light of day no matter how much we may wish otherwise;

Rolling Up to Heaven - Shame really, Joe Walsh put out a song called "I Like Big Tits" once and it didn't do his career any harm.

Adult Child - Mike hated this stuff back when it was made and presumably he still does.

Carry Me Home - Understandably Brian doesn't want to hear his dead brother singing about dying anytime soon.

I know it's been said that Mike hated the big band songs but 2 of them have since been released anyway.

I haven't heard about him hating all of the other songs and as Hey Little Tomboy was included on M.I.U. I guess he didn't.

True, I meant the whole album getting a posthumous release as others have mentioned in the past. To be honest I find much of the record to be pretty crap and the hodgepodge mix of big band stuff with early 70's outtakes really don't sit well together. The best stuff has already been creamed off for past releases.

Couldn't disagree more. Obviously It's Over Now and Still I Dream Of It are wonderful, but the rest of the Adult Child material that's seen release is the worst stuff (Games Two Can Play, Hey Little Tomboy and HELP Is On The Way). On the other hand Life Is For The Living, Everybody Wants To Live, Lines and It's Trying To Say are all great.

I certainly wouldn't say Games Two Can Play is part of the 'worst stuff'. It is just out of place on that album.

I really don't see myself how Everybody Wants to Live can be seen as great but perhaps that's just me. The lyrics are atrocious for one thing.

It's not a bad track, by any means, but nor is it a particularly good one.

They are -- but no worse, actually, than those for Games Two Can Play.

I agree that AC as submitted wasn't very good. And I'm not an On Broadway fan.

But "Life is for the Living," "Lines," "It's Trying to Say" and "Everybody Wants to Live" all deserve release alongside "It's Over Now" and "Still I Dream of It." That's a great batch of tunes that deserves to be heard.

Agree on Lines and Everybody Wants to Live.  Interesting Love Youesque tunes.

Completely disagree on Life Is for the Living and It's Trying to Say, neither of which belong anywhere close to an official release, IMO.

Add both of these to my wish list, as well.  And nobody try to sell me on the idea that Hawaii is unfit for release ("We don't want none of yo' pizza, we didn't order any!").  There are some things in this life people will just never agree upon.  I say Hawaii is sublime.

Oh, and if there truly is a studio/rehearsal/demo version of "Sail on, Sailor" featuring Carl on lead vox, floating somewhere out there in the ether, I'd give your left arm to one day hear it.

These, and any/all surviving Caribou '74 tapes.

I'm not sure if the tune Bulesque was ever recorded but I  remeber reading somewhere that Jack Reily said it was the song Mike Love hated the most so it's probably a pretty good tune.
What I would like to see the most now is a two cd Brian Wilson productions since we have never had one here in the states and there are plenty of  great released AND unreleased tunes. Is anyone up at taking a stab at a track list for such a collection ? I'll add mine later after alittle time to think it over.

Personally I agree that a lot of Adult/Child is below-standard, to put it mildly, however the sequencing plays a big part in making it seem such a hodgepodge. I re-sequenced my copy to have the conventional songs on one side and the big band numbers on the other (see below) and it works a treat. Sort of like a latter-day Today! (albeit of ever so slightly lower quality...)

1. Life Is For The Living
2. Hey Little Tomboy
3. Everybody Wants To Live
4. Lines
5. Games Two Can Play
6. HELP is On It's Way

7. It's Trying To Say
8. Deep Purple
9. On Broadway
10. It's Over Now
11. Still I Dream Of It
12. Shortenin' Bread

I think some of the Adult/Child songs would benefit from re-recording, particularly "Deep Purple" which I really like but I find Brian's vocal on it excruciating at times.  Judging from his performance on the Gershwin album (which is one of my favorite Brian Wilson albums), I think he'd be able to pull it off better nowadays.

They'd never release the concerts in full...if not due to the fact that the performances are generally bad, then because the tapes for the 8/26 show are incomplete.

I don't know, I think most of what's left (that has been booted) ranges from mediocre to terrible - with some exceptions of course. I feel like they got it right with what they included in the box, only there are a couple of really great unreleased tracks not represented there. I can't see there being another full fledged rarities package, although I guess digital only is a possibility. And it depends on the quality of the tracks that most of us have never heard...

I gotta say, they put almost everything I wanted on  Made In California. But there are a few things, which I separate into "reasonably finished" and "possibly unfinished":

Reasonably Finished
"Lucy Jones" (1974): Apparently features a Steve Kalinich lead vocal with Brian doing backups? Or is it a shared lead?
"You're Riding High on the Music" (1974): Apparently another Brian/Kalinich song. Never really heard much of anything about it.
"Ruby Baby" (1976)
"Calendar Girl (1978)
"How's About A Little Bit Of Your Sweet Lovin'" (1979)
"River Deep-Mountain High" (1980)
"Stevie" (1981)
"Sweetie" (1981)

Possibly (and some probably) unfinished
"Rooftop Harry (1972): This was definitely recorded, but according to the engineer, the song was probably never finished. Would be interesting to hear the backing track if that's all that exists.
"Burlesque" (1972?): Hardly anything known about this one. Was it even recorded? And if so, is it in the vaults?
"Gimme Some Lovin'/Baby I Need Your Lovin'" (1972?): I talked to David Sandler about this and he said it's one of the best tracks he did with Brian. However, were vocals done?
"Boys And Girls" (1980): There is a backing track from 1979, but apparently no vocals. I'm thinking the 1980 version might be more completed?
"Water Builds Up" (1984): Apparently tried during the sessions for the '85 album. Would be interested to hear how far this one got, and how it compares to Brian's solo version.

So yeah...at least to me it seems like the compilers of the new set really did put the cream of the crop on there. I mean, all the stuff I've listed either sounds great, or I imagine it would be interesting, but I wouldn't trade off the previously unreleased material that's coming on Made In California for any of it (except "Stevie"). So overall I feel like the guys did a good job of clearing the vaults. And it makes me even  more excited to hear Brian's next work after Made In California comes out.

This is the one thing I was REALLY hoping would be on the box.  I hope it comes out on a 50th anniversary release of Pet Sounds or something.
