Title: Surf Music
Post by: Surfer on June 08, 2013, 07:15:45 PM
If the Beach Boys did Surfin Songs in the 60's why did they stop doing surf music in the 70's and the 80's then they returned doing surf music in the 90's with Summer in Paradise.  Could Capital Records make a CD about  the Beach Boys Surf Music.

The Beach Boys surfing song phase ended in 1964, with "Don't Back Down", from the ASL lp. ASL also ended their car song phase.

The only surf music element on Summer In Paradise is the beautiful guitar solo in Island Fever (probably played by Adrian Baker).

Their surfing music phase was really only their first three albums.  There was a (musical) move away from it after that.  The image remained mired in it though despite the musical transition away from it.

I'd even claim that they moved away from surf music musically on the Surfer Girl album, even though most of the lyrics are surf themed. The only one with surf music elements is Catch A Wave, really. Carl's and Dave's role diminishes somewhat after the first two albums.

Mr. Moto says 'The  Beach Boys' turned left when Dave Marks turned right. Or was it really the other way around? No matter, Bra, the wahinis didn't care either way.

Personally, I think the instrumental tracks would sound about the same they do now even if David had stayed. Brian was too strong a creative force then, which I think might have been part of the reason Dave left, but that's just an assumption.
