Title: Getcha Back - Live Version with Mike on lead
Post by: SummerInParadise23 on June 02, 2013, 05:23:38 PM
Does anyone have a live version of Getcha Back with Mike on lead they can send me? Not lip synched or anything. I did some research and it was part of the set list for a brief period around the release. The only version I've found is a small clip from the 25th anniversary show. Would love to hear how it sounds live. I think Mike sounds incredible on the low parts on the new live CD. I saw David Marks live a couple weeks ago too but he didn't play Getcha Back unfortunately.

It was in the setlist when I saw the BB's in 1985, 86 and 87, so there's gotta be some decent live recordings of it out there.

I attended a gig or two in the 00's where Mike was singing Getcha Back himself. That was before he passed it to Christian.
I need to remember where and when that was and see if I have recordings of that.

To further elaborate....the set list was composed of this..(not in specific order but some kind of order)

California Girls (DM lead)
Do It Again
Surfin Safari (DM lead)
Don't Worry Baby (Jeff)
Surfin' (DM)
Little Duece Coupe, 409, Shutdown, I get Around (I think DM sang lead on all 4)
Catch A Wave
Hawaii (DM)
Little Honda (Gary G.)
Sail On Sailor
California Dreamin' (Chris Farmer)
Good Vibrations
Sloop John B
Surfer Girl
Wouldn't It Be Nice
Dance, Dance, Dance
Do you wanna dance?
Let's Dance (David)
Help Me Rhonda
Kokomo
Summertime Blues
Surfin' U.S.A
Barbara Ann
Fun, Fun, Fun

I might be missing 1-3 songs but that's most of them! Really great show. Only a few people in the crowd but that doesn't matter to real fans:)

Anyone have luck finding a live performance of Getcha Back from the 1980s?

The closest thing I can find is this:

This is an example of why he was replaced. Like flat champagne.

Isn't that the way he sings everything?

What's interesting about this version is I hear Foskett on the falsetto along with Brian.  There's long been debate over whether Foskett's on the single of "Getcha Back" or not (I don't hear him), but this, while clearly mostly pre-recorded, is a different recording or at least a different mix.  I wonder if Foskett's listing of "Getcha Back" on his CV (if I recall that correctly) stems from this re-recording?

I received some great emails! More than I expected! Anyways, someone said they had some video of Mike performing it live. If you're reading this please follow up with that! I'd love to see it.

I don't know, I think Mike sounds alright but what kills that version to me is Randell Kirsch. He gets far too much love on this board...

Randell was new in the band at the point(2004), he sounded way better the two times I saw it with Christian on lead. But he sounds pretty bad here.

Mike's vocal performance doesn't sound too far removed from the studio one in '84.

It's pretty good for me. A little too fast, maybe. And I'm not too keen on Kowalski's cymbal-driven beat. Mike Love sounds pretty good in it.

Mike doesn't sound much different than the record, but that's not saying much. One of his weakest leads and I think he would tell you the song never really fit his voice. I'm not sure that's Randall either, that might be Adrian Baker. He was in the band for at least part of '04

Adrian Baker was gone by this point.

Kowalski's style on most songs was terrible.

"I'll leave her and you'll leave Tim"? It's that what they sing here? If so, that's fun.

I always liked Mike's vocal on "Getcha Back". It sounded great on the radio in 1985 and I think a lot of music fans recognized it and welcomed it/him/the group back based on that vocal (and the falsetto part). Maybe Mike wasn't too fond of it. I didn't understand why he handed the vocal over to David during the C50 tour. It seemed like a fairly easy song to sing, not really stressing the voice too much like some of the other BB songs.

I think it was commented on during the C50 but it was a chance for Mike to take a break, not unlike Brian taking the bulk of 'Add Some Music'. It also was a good fit for David. I personally have always thought it great that the leads on some songs are switched and the group can take great pride that all principle members have contributed live leads over the years. Quite rare in the business really.

edit. I guess Ricky was the exception but did he ever take a live lead? Thats him on 'Leaving This Town'?

Here She Comes was performed at least once, so that's a partial lead vocal for Ricky.

Agree, it's not Adrian. I think overall, it was a good performance. I like how Randell made sure to go different from the original, there's sth. unusual about his falsetto, Idk. Mike sounds well enough for an old guy; nasal or not, he's a more fitting singer on Getcha Back than David. He owns it.

I thought Randell was one of the two, along with Chris Farmer, that replaced Billy H. and Eddie Carter in '96. Or was that Bonhomme? I always get Randell and Bonhomme confused. For whatever reason, they just don't stand out when playing with the likes of Totten and Cowsill.

It was Tim Bonhomme who joined in 96 along with Chris Farmer.
