Title: Is Sandy/Sherry the most reworked song? Post by: joshferrell on May 23, 2013, 05:13:25 PM not counting the "Shortening Bread" songs which is a riff and not so much complete reworks is Sandy/Sherry the most reworked tune over the years? not counting live..
1. Sandy (original instrumental track W/BG vocals) 2. Sherry (Late 60's? early 70's? not sure but I think I recall reading somewhere, maybe on here, that there's a version from this time period) 3.Sherry she needs me (Late 70's featuring Brian's gruffly sounding voice, the one that's pretty much bootlegged the most ) 4.Tricia (Mike Loves unreleased solo version of the same song with some minor variations and different lyrics) 5.mid 80's?- not sure but I think I read somewhere that there's a version from the 80's?? 6.She said she needs me- Released Imagination version. 7.She said she needs me -Rare instrumental with the saxophone. and is Got my pay/Marcella 2nd? Title: Re: Is Sandy/Sherry the most reworked song? Post by: Ian on May 23, 2013, 06:31:24 PM There are also a lot of versions of Back Home- 1963 version, 1969 version and 1976 version

The 80s version you mention was Terri She Needs Me…I know, quite a diversion. Title: Re: Is Sandy/Sherry the most reworked song? Post by: Dunderhead on May 23, 2013, 09:12:44 PM I mean, what did they think every time they recorded this? Did they simply forget that it wasn't that good the last time around or what? I like to imagine every time somebody said as they played the tape back "oh yeah, I remember now why we didn't put this one out..."

Did they simply forget that it wasn't that good the last time around or what? I like to imagine every time somebody said as they played the tape back "oh yeah, I remember now why we didn't put this one out..." Don't you think Sandy is fantastic? Each to their own I suppose. Have you heard the tracking session on the SOT set? A true multitrack production. You get to hear the basic track, then the guitar overdubs, which to me are a revelation. I hear what Chuck Britz meant when he said he used to argue with Brian because something sounded wrong, then when it was mixed in, or the vox went on it all fitted into place. That guitar overdub is like that. This is a guy who could hear the bigger picture in a way that just bedazzles me. I have no idea why they never finished this. Imagine this on Summer Days (ASN). Along with Let Him Run Wild, this would have turned it into a more logical follow up to Today. I love Summer Days, but thematically it was a bit of a step backwards. Oh well, aren't we lucky we have these unreleased gems? Title: Re: Is Sandy/Sherry the most reworked song? Post by: Dunderhead on May 24, 2013, 12:26:42 AM No, I'm not making a statement about the quality of the track, just that they repeatedly deemed it unworthy of completion/release so many times.
Title: Re: Is Sandy/Sherry the most reworked song? Post by: Iron Horse-Apples on May 24, 2013, 12:59:19 AM I thought that's what you meant.
I'm very interested to know what the decision making process was behind shelving Sandy, and putting "I'm Bugged At My Old Man", or "Amusement Parks USA" (, which, don't get me wrong, I love, very psychedelic) on there. Was this a conscious decision to make an old style fun in the sun album after the introspection of Today. If that's the case, why is "Let Him Run Wild" on there. Was Brian trying to keep everyone happy, and was Sandy was a casualty of this? Summer Days is a strange, hodge podge of an album, neither one thing or another. I know I'm judging "the album as statement" here by post '67 standards, but I think Brian was ahead of the game in this respect, and was making album statements as far back as Surfer Girl. Title: Re: Is Sandy/Sherry the most reworked song? Post by: Mr. Cohen on May 24, 2013, 01:25:08 AM I don't know why, but for some reason this song never sounded like a Beach Boys track to me. The production has a lot of typical Brian touches, but I just can't imagine it on Summer Days. Like "Guess I'm Dumb", it has this breezy acoustic thing going on with these very bombastic pop horns, which is strangely enough a style that never seemed to be that present in the Beach Boys. If you look at Summer Days, it seems Brian was intent on reinforcing the Beach Boys image as a rock group first and foremost. Not until the end of the record do we really get anything that's not rock. Yes, "Let Him Run Wild" does have some serious jazzy leanings, but it's very forceful.
That said, I think it's a good song, but image meant so much in those days. Title: Re: Is Sandy/Sherry the most reworked song? Post by: Iron Horse-Apples on May 24, 2013, 03:40:54 AM I don't know why, but for some reason this song never sounded like a Beach Boys track to me. I don't know, imagine the late 70's vocal arrangement sung to the '65 track with those youthful voices. Imagine that chorus! I don't think you could get more Beach Boys than that. And in '65, the BB style was in flux anyway. Personally I think that Sandy would have made a better single than Little Girl, and, as a step towards Pet Sounds, it would have been in the same vein. Post by: AndrewHickey on May 24, 2013, 07:02:34 AM I wouldn't really call Tricia a remake of Sandy She Needs Me, though. It has some very similar melodic phrases in the first two lines of the verse, but then goes off in a very different direction.
Title: Re: Is Sandy/Sherry the most reworked song? Post by: TimmyC on May 24, 2013, 10:47:37 AM The only version I've heard is from Imagination, and I absolutely love it. It is a crime that it was not recorded by the Beach Boys. Then again, the whole Imagination album should have been a Beach Boys record. This track is probably in my top 10 Beach Boys songs (although there are probably about 50 beach boys songs in my top 10).

Post by: punkinhead on May 24, 2013, 02:08:12 PM I did finally find out why Sandy's name was changed back then....Alan Boyd told me that Marilyn had a friend named Sandy, so possibly Brian was writing about her and she didnt like it? That's what I took from that.
Further more, about using girl's names, when they did the Party! album's best song (IMO) There's No Other (Like my Baby), they mention some names: Cindy, Sherry, and Wendy (Cindy from Cindy Oh Cindy, Sherry from Sherry She Needs Me, and Wendy from Wendy?) Maybe I'm looking too much into this! ;) Title: Re: Is Sandy/Sherry the most reworked song? Post by: hypehat on May 24, 2013, 03:38:19 PM Seeing as Brian is singing the 'oh, not like my baby' response, I reckon you are ;)

What is the crime if Brian could handle the vocals by himself? Had mYke luHve been involved it would most likely have been surf, sand and sunshine oriented. The only enhancement would have been Al Jardine, but quite honestly, Brian's vocals were outstanding-far better than BW88. Title: Re: Is Sandy/Sherry the most reworked song? Post by: punkinhead on May 24, 2013, 09:55:13 PM So I've always wondered what the last version you mention is from? The instrumental cut? It sounds like a 90s cut but it's not the Imagination track at all. I haven't heard that one in a while.

I think it's probably just a Muzak version; they've done instrumentals of a lot of obscure BB/BW stuff. Title: Re: Is Sandy/Sherry the most reworked song? Yep, because an album that starts "Another car running fast, another song on the beach" and then runs through songs called South American and Sunshine, plus a couple of remakes of 60s Beach Boys tracks, is totally, utterly, different from the kind of thing Mike Love would have wanted, right?
