That concert is great. I think it would be tops on greatest wishlist of things I can never experience. That NY crowd goes nuts all the time and Mike doesn't talk too much.

You paid for a bootleg. Congratulations. I hope you have itchy piles for the rest of your life for not lining the Lovester's pockets. :)

Oh, it's a great recording and show. Only problem is that you can tell it's definitely recorded off of the radio. It would make a fine release but it would never happen that way, of course.

I've said for years that it's a shame that the Beach Boys never did an online-only sort of "bootleg series" to release the live soundboard recordings that exist, whether circulated or not. Of course, the Beach Boys Central website was supposed to remedy that, and that's been under the rug for almost seven years. The Beach Boys must love having their music bootlegged, I guess...

The Beach Boys - Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum - Uniondale, New York - June 14th, 1974 -FM Stereo Broadcast.

A nice lady named Jane from Nutley, New Joisey sent me a cassette of that show in the late 70's. Since then, the show has been booted on CD as "East Coast Pipeline" and "Trader Goes To Nassau" and "The Beach Boys - Nassau Coliseum, Uniondale, New York". Elton and Paul Simon joined them for the encore.

Saw the Boys with The Dead, Commander Cody, and New Riders Of The Purple Sage six days before this concert in Oakland. Same setlist. Phenominal. Oakland Coluseum was packed to the rafters. Many left after the Beach Boys left and after The Dead started their set as the last band. Picked up a shirt and a concert booklet from this gig. Many said The Boys blew everybody off the stage that day in the hot sun. I agree. 1974 was a great, great year for them. And the following year seemed even better with Beachago. What a great time to be a Beach Boys fan during those 'Endless Summer' years!

Damn u lucky Mikie.. Wish I could of seen these shoes but I was born in 83.  The only reason why I even posted was because there very few people my age who share the same enthusiasm about a BB boot. But yea the one I picked up is pipeline.

LonelySea, every once in awhile I pull out the 2-CD East Coast Pipeline boot and turn it up. Next best thing to being there. To me, the early 70's concerts were the besteses. It's very cool that you discovered it - age doesn't matter a bit - as long as you enjoy the hell out of it!

Him buying bootleg is motivated by his desire to not pay Mike Love? This is Phil Cohen worthy.  ::)

I can't remember who it was in another thread that asked about it, but *this* FM broadcast from Nassau 1974 is *the one* where Dennis sang lead on Help Me Rhonda, and for my money it's one of the most smokin' live performances of that song or of the Beach Boys live band in general ever captured on tape. He kills that lead, and the whole band is rocking out.

I'll agree that if there ever were to be an official BB's live tape release series, like The Dead or Pearl Jam have done for decades, this show would be at the top of such a list.

Yeah, even though he messed up the lyrics, Dennis really rocked Rhonda.

Yeah, even though he messed up the lyrics, Dennis really rocked Rhonda.

I love that performance! Seriously, I can't say enough about how uplifting that tape of that single song can be. I've been down before, and have played that song repeatedly to help get me back in the groove. The sheer joy of rocking out in front of a live audience, warts and all, is in that Rhonda performance and in Dennis' vocal. Killer.

I don't want to step into the other raging topic about the new live album too much, but the fact that the performance and energy outweighs the mistakes, surely not requiring a "fix" of some kind, is what I think bothers some fans about 2013.  :-D

That Nassau 1974 show is awesome! My copy is incomplete though. I always thought that the version of Rhonda from that show was one of the first recordings where you can hear a slight change in Dennis's voice. He still sounds awesome singing it, but his voice sounds a bit lower than the version at Carnegie Hall, for example. Another great show from this time frame is the Tampa Florida 1974 show. I'm starting to think that the 1971-1977 period was the best era for the group, at least as a live band.

Dennis singing Rhonda transforms it into something entirely different. Perhaps it helps to know something of their perceived characters beforehand but I think it comes across in the delivery/performance too.

When Al's "out doing in my head" you picture him sitting at the kitchen table saying "gee Ma, I musta had eight maybe nine milkshakes last night, was I wasted!"

With Dennis you just know that nothing less than a gallon of Jack Daniels would have done.

With Al it's a rebound song, with Dennis it's "well let's see how many other fish there are in the sea!"

I'm just impressed you have a "local record store" to go to. Didn't know they made those anymore. I remember visiting a great record store in Ohio that had a pre-release boot of the Pet Sounds stereo mix. It was a demo of the forthcoming box set for said album.  I had the stereo mix nearly a year before the box set even came out. And it was that mix that *really* turned me on to the album.

Yea it's actually a great record shop with just about anything rare.. Beach boys selection is phenomenal. I like a lot of jazz and I can't find a place to beat their selection, even tried many stores in NYC but not the same. Only one that comes close is a great place in the village called bleeker street records. I remember them having every bb cd and vinyl ever made with lots of boots

OTM.

But then, several groups have had 'bootleg series', like Johnny Cash & The Velvet Underground, to name disparate examples. No reason why The Beach Boys couldn't have put out these concerts unless, of course, they simply didn't like them.

Wish I had some Beach Boys boots on vinyl, tbh. Although the instant access of mp3s is essential for such, well, inessential material as most Beach Boys bootlegs (not really meaning live material), mp3s are an impermanent medium. Vinyl and Digital are so incompatible it's amazing, and yet they're the only way I listen to music.

And they still do, nearly 40 years later. When I saw Al's band last year, Billy & Bobby traded verses.

Mp3 is not my favored listening medium either -- but its better than nothing and the best for portable listening (well FLAC should be better but I cant tell on a portable player like Cowon J3)

I grew up on mp3s, though - the ability to segue anything, regardless of genre or mood and the subsequent thinking that gives to my musical taste and rationale (in my better moments) is really key, and at least equal to the artform of sequencing a perfect album, a 40 minute statement. The main outcome is that I spend a lot of the time clicking >> on my itunes, but I blame Steve Jobs for making me want an iPod  :lol
